Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
Ok I open a new topic for this.
Bertie went to the vet as he was lethargic, not really eating but pooing ok, after his dental on Wednesday.
Checked through and a full set of bloods taken incl.E.C awaiting results early next week.
What we found today is
Temperature39.8
Blood sugar 14
Heart sounds ok
No gas or bloating found.
He is now on all sorts of drugs to cover the main possibilities.
Metacam to continue
Start nebuliser therapy
Fibroflex and metocloperamide as well as a course of Baytrill
Top up fluids orally and commence syringe feeding if not eating by tonight.
Phone vet tommorow for update and plan over the weekend.
I feel very tired today and worry a great deal about him.

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
He is an amazing bun! After all medication was given(Baytrill not due until tomorrow evening) I wanted to do the nebuliser and took Sparky's tip of a carrier covered with a towel. The unit I got didn't seem powerful enough to really cover the carrier. So took the boy out, onto my lap, put the children mask on the unit and he sat there for 15 minutes, nice and quit having his nebuliser.
I also managed to preside him to have some coriander, spring green and banana. He is still not keen on pellets but at least I don't need to start syringe feed tonight. Oh and he had two! Crunchies.
Currently chilling out snuggled up to Bubbles.

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
Thank you all!
Sorry to respond that late but just busy with him and work.
What can I tell you?
He seems a littler brighter in himself and is less lethargic.
In regards to his eating his poos are brilliant(and all over the place)
Eating however is an issue.
He is eager when I bring it into the warren, takes two bites and walkers off. No matter what it is. Tried all top ten veg, fruit, and things he loves but of course would normally not get, such as cooked potatoes, nuts and so on. Diddley squat of effect.
The only way of getting him to eat is stay with him and hand feed one item at the time springeled with lots of encouraging words.
During lunch today I observed something bizarr. He took a piece of plum (soft)in his mouth started to chew and than made a funny noise like being unable to swallow or going the wrong way.he stretched his neck forward and looked very odd. He got distressed by this.
He prefers smaller pieces of pellets if he eats them at all. I got him some junior excel but doesn't make any difference.
I will cut his greens to bite size as I do for Vernon to see whether that will help. Continue with his current drug regime and wait for blood results. If I don't hear anything I will call the vet Tuesday/Wednesday.
Please bear with me if I don't respond to posts. It's not that I don't bother but feeding him takes up to two hours a day(not in one go) and then it is work on top plus other issues with OH going on too.
Thanks again for all the vibes and ideas. I will keep you posted.

Well I guess so. I have not seen this before. Never. But it would fit. He seems to be anxious to eat.

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
Oh no, poor Bertie. This is how Dolly started off. I'm not suggesting for one minute it's anything like that, but may be that he's just taking a while to get going again after his dental. Has his glucose come down any further? I hope his blood results are all ok. If nothing shows up, and his appetite hasn't improved much, I'd be tempted to have a good lateral xray of his abdomen, and a well positioned one of his skull and tooth roots. Lots of vibes for Bertie. xxxxxxxx

Poor Bertie
I wonder if he was intubated when he had the dental and his throat is sore? This wouldn't of course be the cause of the weight loss but may explain his behaviour with eating. Did they Xray Bertie when you went back last week?
You must be so worried

Poor Bertie
I can't offer any suggestions as to what is causing his lack of eating. I do hope you get some answers soon. Maybe speak to the vet over the phone about this behaviour?
Sending lots of vibes and hugs in the mean time

I thought this too, as the ET tubes damage the cilla (or is it cillia?) in the oesophagus which can take weeks to recover, often making buns poorly. I cant imagine they did this though, as its hard enough to see in a buns mouth for a dental at the best of times.
Any news?

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
Have they x-rayed his jaw at all.
Im not suggesting this is what the issue is but when Daisy's abscess (following a dental) appeared he got a very sort throat... the vet said it was red raw and this was causing him more discomfort than the abscess....
Once he was referred to John the first thing he did was to X-ray his jaw, and he found the abscess.
What level of pain relief is he on?

Of course, I hadn't considered that intubation would be counter productive in a dental. Now I think about it all the pics I have seen of rabbits having dentals do not show the rabbit being intubated.
I really hope that Bertie has shown signs of improvement today.

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
Thank you all! For vibes and thoughts.
He had two more (choking) episodes over night and will now only eat some hay and rosewood plantain and dandilion. Even refused his fenugreek crunchy !!!
I couldn't sleep last night so I went and sat with them and eventually managed to doze off on the floor for a couple of hours.
Phoned the vet this morning and had an appointment at 6.
Still some blood results outstanding and hopefully to get them tomorrow. They will get in touch with Richard Saunders for advice. They will phone me when spoken to Richard and to decide what's next.
He is anaemic, so he had a B12 injection tonight and I might now need to start top up feed with recovery.
His white blood count is normal but the neutrophils are raised.
He lost another 50 gram on weight.
BM 12 temp. 39.5.
We discussed that Bubbles is not showing any signs so unlikely to be infection like snuffles and briefly talked about other possible causes as well as his life quality. I will not have my boy suffer, that's for sure. Operation notes say that all was fine during treatment with no injuries.
I will prepare bunny supper in a minute and try to get something into him except of all medication that he is on. It is now so much that I want to spread it out over the evening. I give him Metacam (dog) 0.8 ml once daily. Could I increase this?
Than I need dinner too and a shower hopefully to find some sleep tonight.
I'm glad I found HH and all lovely folks! Thanks again.
