A question about pellets... Empty A question about pellets...

Post by FluffSlave Thu Jun 13, 2013 5:30 pm

There seems to be a lot of talk about pellets on HH lately, I have another question for you all! Laughing

I know the recommended amount is an egg cup per day, but I'm wondering to what extent you can change this? Obviously, Willow is way bigger than Mo - does that mean she needs more than him?

Also, I'm trying to up their pellets at the moment and get a bit of weight on them before they move outside.

Help much appreciated guys!!

Really you want to encourage a hungry bun to fill up with hay rather than increase pellets.  General rule of thumb is 80% hay, 20% pellets and veg.

At this time of year I wouldn't worry about bulking them up before they go out, just keep an eye on them once they do.

Having gradually cut all the Wood Bunnies down by a significant amount, Humum is increasingly of the opinion that pellets are very much a supplementary food. Our lot are all looking so much leaner and fitter, are far more active and are getting through mounds of hay. Pellets are a good way to ensure everybun is bright and hungry twice a day and a quick alert to anybun who is not, and a good way to make sure they are getting the micronutrients they need, but they don't need a lot of them.

I agree with what sparky said, its just a supplement really. They have hay to keep them full Smile

A bit like your mum making you eat up all your veg if you were still hungry!  Laughing    (well that's what I did with my kids)

Bear in mind that as a big bun Willow is more predisposed to heart issues and so she will benefit of being slightly lean rather than slightly fat. Mo will be fine with his this coat and Willow can always snuggle up with him. Buns cope quite well with coldish weather, it is the wet and drafts that cause them real problems.

Thanks guys Hugs

My two get ad lib hay and fresh more times a day than I can count. They then get an AM and PM feed of pellets, but after reading your responses I feel they're getting too much at the moment. I'm slowing reducing them down - goodness knows what Willow will do, she already acts like she is starved when the pellets go down. I literally heard her go 'OM NOM NOM' the once Laughing

I have been limiting Dougals pellets slowly also. He is not very happy and jumps in cage to his bowl to show me. He gives me the look that just makes me feel so guilty but I know it is for the best though so he will just have to learn, but still it is not as easy as I thought it would be when he looks at me the way he does. He looks at me like he is starved even though he gets tons of Timothy hay which he already eats a lot of anyway but will be even more so once reduced to egg cup amount. Although saying that I know it is what needs to be done so it isnt hard either, it is a bit of both I guess if that makes any sense at all. He is eating even more hay in fact with cutting it half a bowl down form full. Today I put less than half in, think I put a quarter or just over in so I am getting there, do not want to do it too fast but not too slowly either.

He is still happy in every other way though, bunks and plays and jumps around like a loon :lol:so he can't be that hard done by. But arnt they good at the guilt trips?
