OMG help me please. Urgent!! U/D Again!!!
Oh ****! Freaking out!! I've just found what I *think* is a maggot climbin up the wall beside Molly and Junior's litter tray!!
I can only imagine it has come from the hay because they are absolutely fine, no injuries, clean bums.
What should I do! Luckily I have a bag of hay here so I've tipped out their litter tray and gave them fresh everything. (I've just cleaned the blimmin thing out this morning )
Anything else I should do? I'm really freaking out right now

If they'd accidentally eaten one it would have been chewed up into pieces wouldn't it?!

Re: OMG help me please. Urgent!! U/D Again!!!
i very much doubt they would have eaten one, but im sure you would fie peices if they had.
Are you sure its from the hay? are there any more in there? i guess you have checked the buns out so its not from them. i wouldnt panick get they old hay in the bin [or return and complain to whoever sold it as i would wonder what conditions it was stored in to have maggots in and get them on some fresh hay

Re: OMG help me please. Urgent!! U/D Again!!!
One maggot is not the end of the world and could have come from anywhere.
Clean the tray, be extra vigilant about bottom checking in the next couple of days. Make sure you look in scent flaps and generally have a good prod around. If your local PaH has a vets you could give them a ring and see if they stock rearguard. This will only kill off the unhatched eggs though so you will still need to check for maggots.
If you see any on the buns then it is vets ASAP.

Re: OMG help me please. Urgent!! U/D Again!!!
It's hard to tell scale, but it looks far too big to be a fly maggot, if it is flystrike you are worried about.
I don't *think* maggots have legs as such, that would allow them to climb a wall. It's far more likely to be the larva from something else, which is probably no risk to them at all. The life cycle of most larva is short so it is unlikely it has come from a previously sealed bag of hay.
They won't have eaten one. Imagine how many bugs outdoor buns encounter...

I really don't think it is a maggot:

Re: OMG help me please. Urgent!! U/D Again!!!
Thanks guys. I have checked them over and can see/feel absolutely nothing. I just sprayed them with fly guard (much to their amusement) not the best for this situation but it's all I have in.
I can't think where els it could have come from. It was in the living room and seems a bit coincidental that it was right above the litter tray. I haven't looked for any more *shudders* The tray has been 100% cleaned out, (for the second time this morning!) and I've just opened a new bag of hay for them.
Yeek! Can't believe what just happened!!!
I hope to god it was just a random one that I pulled out of the bag.
Molly and Junior are fine. Just being Molly and Junior.

Re: OMG help me please. Urgent!! U/D Again!!!
I've been doing a bit of Googling and it looks like a moth larva, although I've not identified which one yet.
How long is it. Does it definitely have legs?

It's hard to tell. It has something! Like little stumps. It's climbing up the side of the glass and moves like a caterpillar?Sparky wrote:I've been doing a bit of Googling and it looks like a moth larva, although I've not identified which one yet.

One minute it's about 1cm, then its double in length when moving.

If it can climb, I'm now certain it's not a maggot. Probably a moth larva

It does sound like some kind of caterpillar. Especially from out its method of moving. Glad it was a false alarm.

That's not a maggot Thumper we get the odd one making their way up the walls they are Moth larvae and we think they are from the hay. You can get rid of them by using something called 'Borax' but I don't know if it is harmful to rabbits, but it's defo not a fly maggot

I also thought it looked like some form of caterpillar. That is Thumper's picture I might add, not anything contained in Borat's mankini......

Re: OMG help me please. Urgent!! U/D Again!!!
I am eating my lunch Jack - now I feel sick!
If you google clothes moth caterpillar then you will see photos similar to yours. You might want to give your wardrobes a good vacuum and put any nearby fabrics in the freezer overnight to kill off any eggs
The buns won't eat them as they are not green and purple!
