Suspected RVHD in a wild rabbit in Cornwall
Suspected RVHD in wild rabbits in Cornwall.
We've been emailed by an owner who says
Reporting an outbreak of RVHD in wild rabbits in the
Gunnislake area of SE Cornwall.
Saw a young adult wild rabbit on Sunday, in good condition, no
obvious trauma but very recently dead, eyes still intact and shiny. It lay with its head slightly pulled back like it had been struggling to
breathe. On closer inspection, I found blood around its mouth and
nose.
These are symptoms associated with RVHD and so we urge you all to be very careful, especially in that part of Cornwall. With this deadly disease in the wild population, first and foremost you need to be certain your rabbits' vaccinations are up to date but also you need to take extra precautions with biosecurity. Infection can be carried on clothes and shoes and on the feet and fur of other pets so if you have a dog or cat you need to be particularly careful.
Ask your vet about suitable disinfectants to use when cleaning, and remove shoes, change clothes when you come home from being outside, and before going near your rabbits.

Thank you for the warning, my friend found the little sick bunny and told me. Holly is well up to date with her jabs. The other precautions will be taken also

Please keep your rabbits' vaccinations up to date, it's the only way to be sure they are protected against Myxomatosis and RVHD.
