Polo may have myxi help please!!! pics includd
I noticed yesterday when doing daily bum checks that Polo's genitals were a little red and larger than usual.
Today however, they were even more swollen. Polo and Opal were booked in fo their myxi vaccination tonight, and i asked the vet to take a look at Polo's underneath. He said that she may have a milder form of myxi and as a result is displaying that symptom. Apart from that, she has no other symptoms, her eyes are fine, i did think her eyelids were a shade redder than they usually were a couple of nights ago but i didnt suspect anything wrong.
She is eating and drinking and binkying around like normal. She has no lumps or bumps, just swollen genitals.
I am of course very concerned about her. None of my other bunnies are displaying any symptoms. Her 6 month booster vaccination was due next week, but she had it tonight. Hopefully that will kick start the immunity and help her fight it off.
We aren't a 100% that it is myxi and im not sure what to do. I've been given metacam if her symptoms get worse over the weekend. I think he gave me that just because i was so worried. He said if she does begin to get other symptoms of myxi then we would take it from there.
Ive added some photos of her underneath - sorry Polo

Did the Vet not suggest antibiotics aswell as anti-inflammatories
Did the Vet take Polo's temperature ?

It does look very swollen but I have *thankfully* not had a Myxi bun so am not exactly sure how it appears about the genitalia.
I am really suprised Polo hasn't been started on abx as even if it's not myxi it certainly looks like an infection. I also thougt giving the vaccine would do more arm than good as it will put extra stress on Polo's immune system....te reason vax should never be given to a rabbit not in 100% full health.
I really, really hope it's not myxi. (((vibes))) x

Was his vaccination last night a booster? I have had a Myxi bun before and you should have been given Anti Bi's immediately to start helping fight the infection and aviod any secondary infection, along with some anti inflammatories. Those genitals certainly don't look great.
Lots of vibes for Polo xxxx

Good good news everyone!!
I took Polo to the vets yesterday and the vet was confident it was no myxi!! yay! He said that the swelling of her genitals was an infection of which she was given antibiotics and anti-inflammatories via injection and oral baytril fo 4 days plus biolapis.
i noticed a slight bump above her eye which the vet thought was a cyst and not a sign of myxi, just a strange co-incidence. This bump has since disappeared, and her swelling of the genitals has gone down. Her eyes arent red, they are just fine, and there are no more signs. I am so pleased. I will of course be keeping a very close eye on her over the next few days, but it is looking good for Polo.
I am so sorry for not updating here sooner... ive been in such a spin.
Thanks so much for sending vibes for her xxx

Re: Polo may have myxi help please!!! pics includd
I am at my wits end i really am. Ive had Polo to yet another vet. My usual vet is on holiday now . The vet checked her over and was again pretty sure that it was not myxi. She did think that there was something wrong with her, but didnt know what as there werent enough signs. She said it may be rabbit syphillis, but ive looked a pics on the internet and it definately isnt that. She was more concerned that she was eating, stasis etc, and didnt give me any medication as she was still on baytril.
Her genitals are still as swollen as they were yesterday, and her eye looks worse today.
I dont know what to do... how ill does she have to be before i can be given an accurate diagnosis and if this is myxi why is it developing so slowly?
The first photo makes the eye look redder than what it actually is...

Well if the Vet thought it might be Treponematosis why did he/she not prescribe appropriate treatment ie A course of Penicillin injections. Baytril is totally ineffective against Treponematosis .......
Have you PM'd Marie Kubiak ( Exotics Specialist Vet and a member here aswell as another Rabbit Forum) with the pics ?

What a nightmare and what a worry for you.
Herbie had syphilis this time last year but only his upper lip and chin were affected. His lesions were definately more crusty and flaky than Polo's but being long haired I am sure we didn't notice them straight away so I have no idea what they looked like 'new' as it were. As far as I recall when I was reading up about syphilis there was no mention of eye involvment BUT at the same time as the syphilis Herbie's tear ducts were blocked. At the time Herbie was very stressed due to being bullied so he may co-incidentally have had snuffles or maybe the syphilis was causing problems.
Either way the penicillin sorted him out and touchwood he has not had a re-occurrance since and the tear ducts have been clear.
Poor Polo's signs all point to mxyi but like you I would have thought there might have been some change or deterioration. Is there a test for Myxi?
I am keeping everything crossed that Polo soon improves.
I am also sending loads of hugs to you xxx
