Jack's-Jane wrote:Well if the Vet thought it might be Treponematosis why did he/she not prescribe appropriate treatment ie A course of Penicillin injections. Baytril is totally ineffective against Treponematosis .......

Hmmm

Have you PM'd Marie Kubiak ( Exotics Specialist Vet and a member here aswell as another Rabbit Forum) with the pics ?

The vet was no sure what was wrong with Polo, and because she was already being treated with baytri, she wanted that to run its course before she prescribed anything else. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a fantastic bunny savvy vet like you do.

I will PM marie now Sad Sad

It might be worth switching to another more effective abx now instead of letting the Baytril run it's course as other abx would probably cover all the same bases that the Baytril is plus more.

I have taken a few of my bunnies off Baytril and onto other abx such as trimethoprim mid-course.

Remember to offer her Pro-Bs to help her guts to cope.

Sending (((vibes))).

Sooz, she has been on Pro-B's (Lacto-B) for 5 days now. I have ordered some more and will get more from the vets later today as i have booked her in again, as her symptoms have worsened. I will update when I am back from the vets later today.

Trimethoprim ive never heard of this?? , what other sort of medication should i ask about??

I think Trimethoprim is also known as Septrin, unless I'm much mistaken.

Best of luck at the vets. x

Trimethoprim is one of the ingredients in Septrin.

However, I would ask Vet about Polo having Depocillin Injections or something like Oxytetracycline. Both are unlicenced for Rabbits but that does not mean that they are 'unsafe'. They are both abx that will treat Treponematosis (if that is what is wrong) Septrin will be ineffective against it. Both Depocillin and Oxytet' are also useful in treating severe RTIs (the normal cause of Myxi fatalities is a secondary Pneumonia)

I really shouldn't pass comment because I havn't seen Polo and I'm not a vet but....I'm really inclined to believe it's modular myxi and not syphillis too. In Myxi, Baytril is the usual choice of abx.....what dose rate is he on and what does he weigh?

Whether its Myxi or Treponematosis I'd still want the Bun to be given Depocillin or Oxytetracyline.
I'd also want Bun on Metacam and Ranitidine

What a nightmare this is for you ........ Crying or Very sad

Post by oscarbunny Fri Sep 19, 2008 8:56 am

Hi everyone, I am so sorry for not updating you last night. I am not very well myself, so i have been putting all my energy into looking after Polo.

I took her to the vets yesterday night, and the vet finally diagnosed a mild form of myxi, and agreed that she had gotton significantly worse since he had last seen her. Whether this is nodular or just a mild form of myxi i dont know.

Now both eyes are affected.... therefore I have been given Clinagel to apply to both her eyes twice daily.

Her genitals are still very swollen, and she has a nodule on her nose, as well as discharge coming from both nostrils. The vet listened to her chest and confirmed that it was not a chest infection.

She has been given baytril again (0.4mls twice daily), apparently i was supposed to be giving the last lot of baytril twice daily too, however i was only giving it once daily. I feel terrible because of this.

This course of baytril will last 5 days, which will mean that Polo has been on antiB's for 10 days now, the vet is concerned that she may run into digestive problems at this stage, and therefore we will have to take it from there.... does anyone have any experience of this?? So then we may have a choice of digestive problems/stasis or myxi??? I am so worried about my little girl.

I have taken her indoors, she is at my mums house (she lives 10 doors away), so i can keep checking on her. I cant keep her here because of the dogs and that will be even more stressful for her as they are incredibly noisy.

She has a snugglesafe, and I have metacam to give her (will this upset her tummy??)..

I know i have asked a lot of questions, but you guys are my rock!

Polo is fine this morning, she was sleeping in her litter tray , still eating and pooing and weeing.

Polo weights 2.3kg i think

I forgot to add that I

I think polo may have caught this from my neighbours cats which I have seen one climb along my fence (with a dead baby bunny Crying or Very sad), to get to its own garden. I have also seen them in my garden, so they could very easily pass a rabbit flea to my Polo... Im 99% certain she doesnt treat her animals for fleas. She is a rubbish pet owner.

A couple of weeks ago, we put spiky strips all along our fence to prevent the cats from coming into the garden and this has worked.

There is no way a wild bunny could get into my garden unless a cat brought it in, and now there isnt even a chance of that happening with the spikes on the fence.

I asked the vet for some advantage (flea treatment) also last night, and all four bunnies have been treated for this. - I forgot to add this bit

I am so sorry that it is Myxi Crying or Very sad
Baytril is a very 'safe' abx and in 10 years I have never had a Bunny develope GI problems on it, some have had very long courses of up to 6 weeks.

I dont know if an anti GI Ulcer med such as Ranitidine might be a good idea if she is on oral metacam Hmmm

I would say Fibreplex would be the best probiotic to give.

Apparently it can be helpful to have Bun in a steam-filled bathroom as this can hep with their breathing. A high environmental temp in general (85C+) has anecdotally shown to increase chances of survival.

Sending more vibes for Polo, I really hope she can get better

Are there any alternatives to oral metacam??? So that it wouldnt upset her tummy. She is on 0.2mls... as she weights 2kg.... is this about right? Ive lost the actual box which the label was on, and only have the info sheet.

She is due back at the vet Thursday... my regular vet who has been on holiday... Is there anything i should discuss with her regarding treatment?

Charlotte, what treatment was princess Caramel on when she got nodular myxi?

Many thanks, guys xx
