UPDATE....I'm getting scared
about Henry's trip to the vet on Sat. morning.
You may have read in another post about his problem when using his litter tray... when I wrote that post I wasn't sure it was a problem, well not a proper problem... just a side effect of the Baytril he's on for the pseudomonas in his nose, or soreness in his muscles. But now I think it's more than that. He does appear to be having problems toileting, not sure if it's pooping or peeing, or both. But it's become apparent over the last couple of days there's more than just the toileting problem. I saw this this morning: He stood up on tip toes to stretch, you know how they do, on tippies, up tall, back a bit arched and a huge yawn! Well, he got in that position and his hind legs nearly collapsed under him. They kind of buckled and he staggered.
He's also looking rather uncomfortable and dejected when lying down in certain positions... sometimes he can't get comfortable.
There's something not right and I'm scared.

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
Last night, about half an hour after posting he went through the above described toileting performance then exited the litter tray with such an large, explosive leap .... then for the rest of the night and this morning he's been almost his usual self. Though I am beginning to think I can't really recall what his usual self was like. And I say ALMOST his usual self because for a while last night, straight after the leap, he seemed like he was a tad "high".
I don't know what's going on but it's strange. One minute I think he's injured/got arthritis in his back/pelvis. Then I wonder if he's got kidney/bladder stones (his pee is clear, normal smelling and copious). Then I wonder if he has a partial blockage in his bowel, or polyp in his bum.... My head is spinning and my imagination in overdrive.
What the Devil is wrong? It can't be so bad, can it? I mean he's eating and drinking fine and the poo and pee produced looks fine.... it's the act of producing one or the other (or both?... No not both, that's impossible) that's the problem.

Dee, I don't know what going on with his majesty. Hope it just off for whatever bunny reasons there are I agree as long as eating, drinking and elimination is going on it shouldn't be big concern.
It is Saturday morning now and I don't know when you got the vet appointment but oh mighty I send all the wishes and vibes to you both
Come o Henners.

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
We got back about forty minutes ago. First job: put the fleece in the washer.... he'd peed on it, twice!
News is.... Wait for it..... He's constipated!
Damn rabbit, I must have a few hundred grey hairs over this.
The vet gave him a thorough going over and I gave a pretty good account of his symptoms and the conclusion is that because he's been on antibiotics for over three months now they are having a gut slowing effect. So he is now on Zantac to get him going again.
I asked about the back pain symptoms and he believes that he will be in some discomfort from the constipation and that he may have strained the muscle again by "straining"!
When I asked about his funny behaviour the other night after he got out of his tray ... he seemed rather high ... the vet laughed and said that most likely he had had a "good result" and was happy to be rid!
Please... don't let me get all wound up with worry over this darned rabbit ever again!

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
He's not quite back to normal (whatever normal is for him). He had the first lot of Zantac about 5pm and I've yet to notice any results.
ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE OF ZANTAC AND CONSTIPATED BUNS?
It's gonna be tough getting two lots of meds into him. Syringing is out of the question, he's way too much for me to handle and syringe single handed. So I'm giving him 2.08 baytril and 1.00 of Zantac on food stuffs and it's not easy getting him to eat them every time.

No sorry love, I haven't had experience of that at all but hope all turns out well. Holly would be the same, it takes about 3 of them to hold her when she has her claws trimmed.

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
Soundwave takes medicine no bother he thinks it's the banana one(he used to be in that one long term, Miranda turns into a turtle head disappears in chest.
Maybe leaving him slightly hungry so he feels he has to eat the food with the medicine, only thing I can think off.

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
He's not been eating so well today. He was really stressed out at the vets whilst being examined but seemed over it and was quite active last night, plus he ate his all his food stuffs along with plenty of hay. Today though he's been very quiet, hardly touched his pellets but has eaten hay and some grass and dandelion leaves it took me hours to find. He's so far only eaten half of his morning pellets.
Poo is nothing to write home about but doesn't warrant the vet. He's been a bit grouchy too, did not want grooming. At the moment he's sat by the fire.
One thing... I've not noticed any of the straining behaviour in the tray. Poo has been produced without straining but I'd like to see bigger poops and more of them.

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
He's back at the vets tomorrow.
He's hardly eaten a teaspoon of pellets today and the hay intake is down, but not drastically. He has enjoyed some grass and eaten his broccoli and cabbage. But the poop situation is poor.
He left a few smallish poops in the morning without too much fuss but that was at about 8-30 (Mon). There was nothing more till 9-30 at night when there was some mantling and paw flicking but then at 12-45 (Tues) he had a bad time pooping with some whimpering... but then he leapt out of the tray and began eating some pellets. But he had passed only a small heap of poops and they were about a third the size I'd expect, especially with the hay consumption.
I'm sure there is definitely something wrong with the actual passing of poo, not his gut. Surely if it was his gut/stomach he wouldn't eat at all?
His appointment is at 11-00am. And I'm not looking forward to it, in fact I'm scared.

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
He had a bit of a mixed night but we got to the vets ok and after an exam. and discussion I left him there for X-rays.
Waiting for the vet to ring me with results. And depending on the results we might be consulting Richard Saunders (I'm an RWAF member). No one can quite figure out what's wrong. Why he should be in distress pooping when he's eating reasonably ok (he ate his SS4+ this morning and seemed quite bright) but he produced only 4 smallish poops this morning. The vet could feel nothing when he examined him this morning (he felt nothing on Sat. either).
So it depends on the X-rays. He's having three done, one on either side and one on his back.

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
Well the vet just rang and it's a very mixed bag. Certainly nothing that I expected.
First: Henry has an enlarged heart.
Second: he has some problems with his lungs.
Third: He as an enlarged kidney.
Fourth: They couldn't find his second kidney!
They vet has had an emergency job on and hasn't had time to sort out the full details... he has to do measurements and such ... plus he is sending all the details to Richard Saunders and we won't know fully what's what until he has consulted with him.
I knew I had reason to be scared!

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
He's home. Very sleepy, waking for a few minutes and an hop around then kipping again. He has eaten some parsley and hay and had a good long drink of tepid water. He looks worn out.
I've been reading online what articles I can find about heart disease in rabbits. Apparently not a lot is known and what I read, case histories and general info, was not good. It would seem Henry's life will be short.
I have promised him he will be loved like no other bun, he will be spoilt rotten and he will "never live for me".

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
Oh Dee that's upsetting, but at least you know what's going on.
It's good to get him referred to Richard Saunders. And hopefully they can sort a treatment plan for him.
Sending you hugs. Please keep us updated.

Re: UPDATE....I'm getting scared
I know there's no cure for this and Henry's life will not be a long one even with treatments. All I can hope is that we can give him some quality of life and keep him happy. If it turns out he is going to be having more bad days than good and is miserable then I won't pursue treatments that will keep him alive in such a state. I've promised him he will never have to "live for me".
He's very tired today but I've been feeding him titbits little and often to avoid having to syringe feed him, he gets so terribly stressed by that and on my own I can hardly hold him let alone get food into him. He looks very relaxed at the moment.
