Sand pit sawdust pit or soil pit?? Empty Sand pit sawdust pit or soil pit??

Post by kitkatmoo Thu Jan 08, 2009 5:24 pm

Hello,

I have bought my bunny a box to go digging in and wasn't sure if I could put sand in it or if that would be too small & light and might get in his eyes & respiratory system. Can anyone recommend what to put in it for him to amuse himself having a good dig around?

Thanks albino

I dont know if sand could be dangerous but I suspect it would be fine. Try lots of different things. Soil is great, newspaper is good, loose bark would probably be good fun too! I will watch this thread I am always looking for new ways to entertain my lot and as I am about to fill in the burrow they have dug it could help!

I have used shredded paper but found that they just used it as a litter tray then. Perhaps soil would be a good option? They would naturally dig in that anyway.

I use a mixture of soil and play sand and always keep it a bit damp so it doesn't go dusty. I would never use builders sand

Thanks guys, will try a few things & see which he enjoys the most.

Re: the box, it's just a cat's litter tray but one with a lip round the top so all the contents don't come out over the floor.

Everything I've tried (all of the above) has ended up as alitter tray, so I've stopped trying Laughing He's not really a digger anyway, so it's fine. I hope you find something that works Smile

I would say soil is your safest bet, it's less likely to cause respiratory problems as sawdust is often strong smelling and dusty and sand can irritate eyes, ears and the nose....plus it gets everywhere!

Do you think compost would be ok - I now it's esentially soil but should O be looking out in case anything has been added to it.

I don't have a garden really so the only form of soil I have is the kind that comes in a bag!

Mine have an outside run and the soil is very sandy here (although damp sand) and they adore digging in it. They don't dig so much in their litter trays (which are filled with sawdust/woodshavings) but this is probably because there are more places to tunnel to outside Smile
