Indoor Cage Advice
Hi everyone. We're thinking of bringing our bunny indoors to become a house rabbit. We've only had him a week but already I'm finding it hard to put him back outside at night when we go to bed!
Does anybody have any recommendations on particular indoor cages and also which size would you recommend? I know the recommendations for outdoor hutches but am finding it hard to find indoor ones as big as suggested.
Any advice would be brilliant, thank you

Re: Indoor Cage Advice
A lot of bunny owners use NIC (or similar) grid panels. I seem to think B and Q sell them. The beauty of these is that you can construct a pen to what size you want and also use the panels to build in more than one level. Here is an example.

I do have the largest Ferplast cage (I bought it cheaply from Zooplus and is 140cm long) but it is too small I think to leave buns in for any length of time without an attached run.
How lovely to have a house bun - my OH is allergic to hay

Re: Indoor Cage Advice
My OH started sneezing last night when Mr. Maggo was out in our lounge and he said he's allergic to rabbits but I think he was only joking (I hope!)
That's a great idea about the grid panels and doesn't seem to expensive. And I guess we could expand if we bought another one at a later time.

Mr. Magoo is such a sweet bun, that face He certainly suits his name
I think those grid panels are great too. Be warned though, brining in a bun is an evolutionary experience! We started out with this huuuge cage, double storey penthouse thing, thinking he'd be in the cage most of the time (We all had to start somewhere ) but it soon became obvious that was one bun who was not gonna be confined, so after 3 weeks or so, we left the cage open and created a secure run type thing. That lasted about 4 days, then he took over the room, so we didn't resist, we bunny proofed it, took out everything he could eat that would harm him and that was that....for about a week, then he was in the front room, and very quickly the huuuge cage was fairly redundant. We put him in it at night, but that was all, so we gave it to our local rescue and she gave us a Nero 4 which was just a docking bay for him really. He's hardly used that and it's now in the garage gathering dust, but we keep it for if he needs to stay elsewhere overnight.
He now has complete run of the place and sleeps where he wants to, but that isn't ideal for all house buns
I made a webbie when we first got him to log our initial experiences of houe bunny husbandry, you may find some helpful info on there in the 'story so far' section - Clicky

Re: Indoor Cage Advice
Thanks for the advice Jay. I know Mr. Maggo already hates going back in his hutch. Mainly because every time I get him out, when I put him on the floor, he thumps at me! He doesn't run off or anything. He actually thumps while I'm stroking him for the first few times as if to make a point of how angry he is that I left him in his hutch all night!
I'd love him to have the run of the lounge but that would have to wait until our children are older. We have crawling twins that would look like two big dogs to the poor bunny!

Re: Indoor Cage Advice
No worries You'll need to consider where he's going to live indoors, if he's not going to be in your lounge, as he'll need to feel included in the family, but obviously be safe from and for your twins. It's usually recommended that they have a space that's within earshot of you all, but also is quiet enough for him to get a nap when he wamts to. Those grids are great cos you can build a run out of them too, which will give him an enclosed, open space... if that makes sense
Re: Indoor Cage Advice
Our living space downstairs is quite big and is open plan so anywhere in here he will be near us.
I did think of a cage on a stand so the twins wouldn't bother him.
Bertie is gorgeous by the way:) I've just been watching him on youtube. He looks so playful. I never thought rabbits could play like that until I did more research when we got Mr. Magoo. Last night I rolled a ball with a bell in it to him and he picked it up by one of the grooves with his teeth and threw it! My OH missed it and I swear he thought I imagined it when I told him!

Re: Indoor Cage Advice
Oh bunnies love playing ball! People don't believe it when you tell them.
My indoor set up has always been as follows, large indoor cage as base station. Rabbit in (if I need them safely out of the way for any reason), but mainly, cage door left open and rabbit to come and go as he pleases. I always keep the litter tray and food in the cage and quite often they like to go in their for their naps etc. Its whatever you find works for you. The idea of a cage on a stand is good with regards to your twins!
Btw, Mr Magoo, is just DIVINE! :luv:

Re: Indoor Cage Advice
Thank you:) It's a good idea having two cages/hutches, one indoors and one out.
Thanks for the advice everyone:)

Re: Indoor Cage Advice
Hello
Ogs is in my room, and this is his set up :
However I have taken the run out now, as he knew how to get out of it. So now it just blocks off specific places.
I am going to buy a bigger indoor hutch however, after my birthday (hopefully, If i get enough money )
I love having ogs indoors, he has come out of his shell so much becuase of it.

Re: Indoor Cage Advice
Thanks for the pic I know Mr. Magoo would love it indoors, he seems well settled when he's in here.
I can't wait to bring him indoors full time!
