Feeding routines Empty Feeding routines

Post by AprilGirl Thu Jun 11, 2009 9:07 pm

Hi again
I've been getting conflicting advice on how I should be feeding Shadow. I've been told not to feed him fresh fruit and veg (he likes broccoli, apples, spinich, parsley (should this be flat leaved or is curly parsley ok?) carrot and basil so far) everyday only once a week and to give him a bowl full of the little rabbit pellet food everyday. But on the other hand someone else said to give him a little of the fresh stuff and the pellets and he'll just eat what he wants, everyday. I've also been picking him some dandelion leaves (my garden is a little overgrown Very Happy ) and some of the long juicy looking grass. He always has a fresh stash of timothy hay and I use the normal hay for his bedding so there is always that too.
Help!! scratch
What routines do you all follow so I know I'm doing things right for him!
Thank you
Emma x

Hi Emma

Mine have a handful of pellets twice a day and they get a small plate of fresh veg in the evening , I try to vary what they get but it can be anything from spring greens, basil, mint, rosemary , cucumber, celery, rocket or spinach. The then get a small piece of fruit once a week as I believe that fruit and carrots are high in sugar and chould only be fed as a treat.

They have unlimited Hay which I change twice a day as they always seem to prefer the new hay that I put in with them.

Hope that helps , I also seemed to get alot of conflicting advice when I first got my 2 but found this forum really helpful.

I'm sure somebody else will be along soon to give you a bit better advice than me. Very Happy

My three have a small amount of pellets in the morning, they then free range round their compound and have various stashes of hay to nibble, along with grass and apple tree wood. At 10.00 pm they get a selection of veg, usually spring greens, cucumber, peppers, carrot, apple, pear etc. I usually don't give them too much fruit or carrot. They also get dandelions when I am walking home .

Mine are fed a bit different but ill be honest its only because mine seem to have stomachs of steel!

They are given a handful of veggies in the morning

hay all day

then handful of pellets, few more veggies , and a small plate of redigras/plantain or other herbage

they are also given milk thistle and dandelion+leaves as a treat when mums gardening!

Somehow I got into a routine of feeding pellets in the morning and veg in the evening, don't know why. Everybody is in perfect health, so I think my routine is OK Smile
I give carrots, brocolli (hate this really, my kitchen covered in little green thingies), celery, chinese cabbage, paksoi, chicory, mixed lettuce, spinach, peppers, tomatoes (not often) apples, and herbs from the garden, grass and dandelion leaves. I have a lot of wild carrot around, they love that. And in september, I steal corn when I go out walking Smile
And hay of course.

Hiya ..

Johns has a bowl of excel pellets which I refill whenever it goes down. He has a separate bowl for his favourite blackberries and he gets a handful twice a day. He has a third bowl in which he has spring green, curly kale, dill and whatever else I have which is just filled up when it goes down but normally every evening when he goes to bed.

He has a dandelion and fennel chew treat on inside of his cage that lasts him ages.

Once or twice a week he get some raspberry/milk/yoghurt/choc drops (one of each) as a treat.

He has hay and grass, dandelions and whatever else is in our garden lol all day xx
