To chip or not to chip??
Morning
Just booked Shadow in for his VHD vac next week and asked about microchipping. They have special rates on this month £13.50 for a normal chip and £20.00 for a thermal one, never heard of that one, apparently they can take their temperature with it.
Don't know if I should get him done, he's in my locked back yard at the moment in his hutch but our garden isn't attached to the house (We live in an old house with the yard, back lane and drive between the house and garden) it's not a huge distance away but when he's in his run he'll be more exposed than in a attached garden iykwim.
I think I'd like to but my OH doesn't think it's worth it. Do you have yours done?
Thank you
Emma x

Re: To chip or not to chip??
I have Big Bob chipped as he is free roaming and with my kids leaving the front door open I would be scared to loose him . Being a foster bunny mum as well I have had so many rabbits handed over that have been found as well as the phone calls asking if I have their rabbit. If they had been chipped they would have been re-united.
Have your contacted your local RSPCA as I am sure they will chip for £10.00 and they will come to your house. I am still looking at getting Dixie, Lupin and Ammie chipped just for peace of mind more than anything.

Re: To chip or not to chip??
Dawn does the RSPCA branch you foster for scan rabbits when they are handed in? It's just that very few places seem to bother, which is why I havn't had mine done.
Re: To chip or not to chip??
Yes they do, if an ACO collects a rabbit from jo public then the first thing they do is scan them to see if they can re-united sooner rather than later if not ever. The sad thing is not many rabbits get chipped so may never go back home. My vet does the same thing when ever I take him in a new bun for a health check.

When I found Felix wandering in our street, I took him to the vet for a check up and they scanned him in case he was chipped - he wasn't.

Re: To chip or not to chip??
Emma, with the remote garden set up Shadow will have, I would consider it. There have been (I think) 3 or 4 buns that have escaped and gone missing in the last year here. All but 1 have come back. If you think Shadow could escape, having him chipped is a way of increasing his chances of coming back to you, as Nickie said, when she found Felix, she took him to see if he'd been chipped. If a Nickie found Shadow, and did the same, he'd come back to you, although it would be very difficult for anyone to let him go, he's so gorgeous... if it were me who found him....well, let's just say that Nickie's clearly a better person than me

You tinker Jay he is pretty gorgeous though isn't he!
I think he'll definately be getting chipped, I'd hate to lose him and like everyone has said it heightens the chances of him coming home again! It's a small price to pay for the knowledge he'll be found and reunited with us!
Now it's deciding if its the normal one or the thermal one we go for!
Thank you everyone

Re: To chip or not to chip??
All mine are chipped, and all the bunnies that come into my care (for whatever reason) get scanned - my thoughts are simple, by my being so insistant at my vets, they have now made it a part of their general health checks, I don't often have to ask them anymore.... so I know if one of my buns gets taken there I will get them back.... It also puts my mind at rest, knowing I have done EVERYTHING i possibly can to never lose my bunnies. At least if they went missing now I would have a small spot of hope that they can come back. I also think that by chipping mine and being so persistent with it I am helping to raise awareness of chips for bunnies, so that one day it really will become the standard procedure (like with vaccinations) - It's the small things....
Re: To chip or not to chip??
Ooh just thought of another question about the chipping.
Do they have to be a certain age before they can be chipped? Shadow will almost be 11 weeks when I next go to the vets!

Re: To chip or not to chip??
Further more, would somebody who found the rabbit think of taking it to the vet to be scanned?
Re: To chip or not to chip??
Well when I found Felix, the vet scanned him.

Re: To chip or not to chip??
Think I'll agree with Nickie! Better get Bertie chipped, coz if he escapes Nickie then I'll snap him up, he is one hunky bunny!

Re: To chip or not to chip??
I think really this is one of those situation whereby the more people ask for their rabbits to be chipped or for strays to be scanned, the more worthwhile and likely it would be that vets and animal rescues would not only scan them but chip them routinely too.
Perhaps we could come up with some kind of summer campaign on HH to support the chipping and scanning of pet bunnies?
