Re: To chip or not to chip??
Emma, if you go ahead, would you consider asking the vet or chipping person to allow you to film the procedure on your camera? If you tell them it's to make a promotion film for chipping, they may permit it.
I'd be grateful if you'd consider asking, we could use the footage to allay peoples fears about it and as part of a short film for the you-tube channel

5 of mine are chipped, Autumn will be chipped once she has had her check up and has the all clear
Re: To chip or not to chip??
Can I ask where the chip is actually inserted on a bun, and is there a risk of it moving?

I've decided he is definitely getting chipped, just not sure if to go for the normal one or the thermal one, what do you think?
Yes I'll ask if they would let me film them doing it, I'm sure they wouldn't mind (would they?) If it means it'll promote rabbits being chipped then I'm all for it, keep the bun's safe and where they should be, it's a great idea Jay!
Shadow is at the vet on Wednesday for his VHD so I'll take my camera along in case they can do it there and then.

Sorry Lynda, meant to answer this in my other reply.
It is inserted in the scruff of the neck and no it should move, I have seen a dog scanned before and the rescuer scanned all over her body on the off chance it had moved or put else where.

Re: To chip or not to chip??
Ohhhh, in that case I'm a bit concerned , a friend of mine has a bunny which is chipped but it's been done in her ear
My friend called me to say that her bun is constantly scratching her chipped ear, that can't be right can it?

I've no idea I'm afraid, Berts is a house bunny on a 3rd floor, so I've never looked into chipping, I'm sure someone will be able to advise you

That's great, thanks, if you make sure you don't film the person, I can't see why they'd object. If they sem happy with the idea, perhaps you could push your luck and aske them to talk through it as well, it's for a good cause Thanks

Re: To chip or not to chip??
When the vet scanned Felix, he scanned him all over, so I get the impression that they do it in the body. I wouldn't be happy about it going in their ear.
I would probably pay the little extra for the thermal chip as it is horrible for the poor bun to have a thermometer shoved up his bottom when he's not well!

To chip or not to chip U/D
Hi
Just thought I'd let you know I went for it and now my Shadow is chipped. He went for his VHD injection this morning and the vet (who is very nice and appears very knowledgeable about rabbits) said it was a good time to do one (plus they are on offer this month) She didn't recommend the thermal one as she said they don't give and accurate reading and are usually used in aggressive animals. So I went with the normal one, Shadow was a very brave bun and didn't struggle and when she'd finished he hopped back into his basket and started having a nibble on some hay!!
He's in the house at the moment hopping around in the dining room, he has been lying under the radiator so I think he's feeling a little stressed as he never lies flat out! Hopefully he's not too stressed
The vet let me film the chipping and got a nurse to hold him for me, unfortunatley as both of them were holding him it was hard to see what was happening, hands in the way. I'll have a look at it later and see about putting it on the you tube channel for you. It was a nice quick procedure and he didn't flinch, brave boy!
She has also given me some pancur to give him a 9 day course, I think I'll start it next week as I don't want to stress him even more and give him too much to fight off with having the VHD too! What do you think?

Re: To chip or not to chip??
Emma, I'm sorry I've just caught up with this, I'm glad it went Ok and that Shadow was brave
Don't worry too much about the film, if we get some more people doing it we can use what you have and make a short info film about it. Thanks for doing that and I hope Shadow's Ok now
