Peanuts Abcess - U/D seen specialist
Yup.. thats right.
Just witnessed him grooming himself like they do and had his right leg stuck out infront of him like they do, and he was cleaning round his hock. I look closer and see he has fur in his mouth and he has literally plucked the hair from his hock.
The fur had grown back and the bald patch was small again now i can EASILY place my THUMB onto his hock. hes plucked along the hock towards his toes, and around the base of his hock like up his ankle almost. Ive felt it, and it doesnt feel or look like the abcess is back, so why on earth would he pull all the fur out!?!?
Im taking him to the vet tomorrow i think.

Re: Peanuts Abcess - U/D seen specialist
this is how it looks now. You can see his plucked more at one side, its not directly in the middle. feeling it, theres a lump on the SIDE off the hock. so i am thinking maybe the abcess IS back?! Felt his other hock and theres no such lump.
I can only see the specialist on tuesday. I hope he will be okay to wait that long.
Anyone got any advice? I dont know what im doing wrong

Re: Peanuts Abcess - U/D seen specialist
Possibly he was experiencing some discomfort on the area perhaps from the fur growing back or from the dry calloused skin underneath. Some rabbits have been known to pluck at themselves when they have a dental problem but with Peanuts history I would say irritation from an old wound is more likely.
Re: Peanuts Abcess - U/D seen specialist
hes seeing the vet tonight because of the lump ive found on his hock. its hard, and feels like bone. but its definatly a lump as he doesnt have it on the other side and its all bumpy and strange.
I thought this was over, he was doing so well.

Re: Peanuts Abcess - U/D seen specialist
It might be a boney callous, where the bone has had to grow back and heal from the abcessation it sometimes over compensates and grows unevenly, much like a scar tissue on a flesh wound.
It may be that the edges are uneven and are bothering him when he walks on it.

Re: Peanuts Abcess - U/D seen specialist
Hes back on septrin to heal it as much as possible, and then not next week, the week after on mon or tues hes going to go under and have it looked at.
If its got into the bone, then he will be put to sleep, just like when they checked before. she will remove the abcess if its not in the bone, and is going to remove a little bit of his tendon where its sitting. but if it comes back after this there will be nowhere for it to sit so it will go into his bone, so if it comes back after this thats it

Re: Peanuts Abcess - U/D seen specialist
Did you have the abcess cultured last time SJ....I can't remember off the top of my head. I'm just wondering if there is some kind of antibiotic preperation they can make for you to apply to the wound itself post-surgery.
Re: Peanuts Abcess - U/D seen specialist
what do you mean cultured? is that when they send it off to the lab?
they sent it off and found the only antibiotic that will resist it is Septrin but obviously thats oral.
theyve never given anything to apply to it directly because the wound itself heals up well all the time, and because we know the abcess is in the tendon but fluid leaks from it into his hock they dont think theres anything to put on it
they just tell me to keep it clean and dry. Poor lad. hes very quiet today and wont eat pellets or much veg hes only eating curly kale at the moment. I think hes in pain.
I have metacam and i know the dose from before bcus it says on the bottle, mum thinks i should give him some.
