they sent it off and found the only antibiotic that will resist it is Septrin but obviously thats oral.
theyve never given anything to apply to it directly because the wound itself heals up well all the time, and because we know the abcess is in the tendon but fluid leaks from it into his hock they dont think theres anything to put on it
they just tell me to keep it clean and dry. Poor lad. hes very quiet today and wont eat pellets or much veg hes only eating curly kale at the moment. I think hes in pain.
I have metacam and i know the dose from before bcus it says on the bottle, mum thinks i should give him some.
I just wondered if there was a antibiotic in the same family they could apply into the cavity after lancing it, for example Mack tested positive to he use of Engemycin but that couldn't be applied toppically....however Doxycyline from the same drug family (tetracyclines) could be used topically in the form of Ornicure powder.
Part of the problem with abcesses isn't getting them to heal, it's keeping them open long enough to kill off the bacteria before they close up and this is the gruesome part as it often means literally peeling the scab off each day.
This is all anecdotal though as I don't know how easily it would be to apply these guidelines to an abcess in the position of Peanuts.

If you paid for the culture and sensitivity testing your entitled to see the lab report. Mine was read out to me in the surgery but they would have printed it if I had asked.

Re: Peanuts Abcess - U/D seen specialist
we saw his specialist again and basically we had to make a choice.
Choice 1 - it goes away when he is on septrin so keep him on septrin and metacam for the foreseeable future, perhaps his whole life. Theres a good chance he would become immune to it eventually.
Choice 2 - do the surgery that was planned before. He had a 40% survicial chance if we do this. it is very close to the nerve and there is a chance she could damage his nerves and it could paralyse his leg. or it could come back after that. If it comes back AFTER surgery it will get much worse but if it doesnt, it will heal up completly.
I have chosen surgery. Some of you may not agree with this and some may have made a different decision but, he hated med time, he runs away from me whenever he sees me, he bites, scratches and goes crazy when its med time and he would be having septrin twice a day and a metacam once a day and he is living his life constantly on edge, he is getting stressed and run down and his weight yoyos.
I want to give him a chance at a HAPPY life. If he doesnt survive surgery or it comes back then obviously we will let him go but i want him to have a chance at a good life. and i cant watch him slowly go downhill, its "do or die" basically.
He is having surgery in 2 weeks time on tuesday the 14th July. This surgery is costing £450 at least, thats brings his insurance claims to £1300

You know him best so any choice you make will be made with his best interests at heart. I hope so much that everything goes well and that he makes a recovery because I know how much you love him. Keeping fingers crossed for you both.

Poor Peanut.
Bunny abcesses are the cruellest vilest things. I hope that all goes well with the op and you have more time together.
Loads of hugs SJ
