Urgent advice needed please re wormer Empty Urgent advice needed please re wormer

Post by AprilGirl Sun Jul 05, 2009 5:46 pm

Hi
Shadow is 12 weeks old and my vet gave me the pancur wormer to give him over 9 days, I held off till today due to him having his VHD injection and I didn't want to overload his system.
Anyway as this is the first time I asked my husband to help, I wrapped Shadow in a towel and hubby was giving him the wormer, I said to him just one graduation was needed. I thought that was pretty straight forward except the stupid prat of a man he is somehow thought that meant the whole damn tube!!! Obviously I realised when it started oozing out Shadows mouth he was still pushing the plunger and pushed it away. I don't think he got too much but obviously more than he should! What should I do? Hubby says I didn't make it clear but how much clearer could I have made it???
Please Help asap I'm worried for my bunny!
Thank you Emma x

He should be ok, lots of people have apparently overdosed their buns with panacur rabbit (I did a google search). Always best to go with what the vet says though. Let us know what he says Smile

Thank you for your reply
Just got back from the emergency vet. On the phone they said they would keep him over night incase he needed a drip, but when she checked him over and looked how much he's taken she wasn't worried and said it would be less stressful for him if he came home.
I'm keeping a close eye on him and I'm to phone if I'm at all worried, she said he may have a little vomiting or the runs in which case he'll need a drip.
He's stretched out on the floor now and seems fine so fingers crossed all should be ok!
He's had a little water and a nibble of hay, the vet said to do everything as normal!
My poor bun, we'll not be talking to the hubby tonight! Wink

I thought they didn't but when the vet said that I just assumed she knew what she was talking about!
So have I only got the runs to worry about then?

(ps your Shadow is gorgeous. All your buns are tho)

Hi Emma - perhaps you need to review your vet as if she thinks rabbits can be sick then she doesn't sound very rabbit savvy - there are a lot of non rabbit savvy vets around and you want to make sure you have one who is on the ball for if something happens.

Morning everyone
Wave
So far so good, he spent the night in the kitchen, he's eaten and drank as usual and his poo's have been normal. He's currently lying flat out in front of the tv.

Hope that he's going to be ok, the vet said it could take up to 30 hrs after the overdose for any effects. I'm hoping with everything that he hardly got any, most of it came back out, obviously he couldn't swollow that much so quick. Looking at the tube there is still over half left and as most came out his mouth, I don't think he got as much as I first feared.

Rachel - I didn't go to my normal vet, it was the emergency one which I think is attached to the PDSA. It is frightening to think that they are giving this advice and not knowing their subject! My own vet's are accredited with a small animal certificate thing and she seems to be knowledgeable.

Hi Jay
No I haven't spoken to my vet yet, I've been just keeping my eye on him, do you think I should ring them?
His boy bits have dropped now too so I need to book him in for neutering maybe I should pop him down for them to check over him, I don't know what to do for the best!
Arrgh, I thought I had enough worrying about my children now I'm worrying myself sick about my new baby too!

Don't worry too much, he's just had a shock and if he wasn't well, it's unlikely he'd be eating. As your vet is a bunny vet, it would do no harm to speak to him and see if there's anything he'd recommend you do or give him, you could discuss the possibility of his neautering, and they may want to see him anyway, it's worth a ring, for your peace of mind as well Smile

I've just rang my vets and I've got an appointment at 5:10 this afternoon for them to check him over and listen to his tummy!

She said everything is more than likely ok but seeing I'm worried to put my mind at rest to go down with him. Will sort out the neutering too while I'm there, but will probably put it off for at least another week so I don't lump too much stress on him in a short space of time the poor baby!

My ex once poisoned our dog with a strong liquid against fleas.
He diluted it 10/1 instead of 100/1...
The dog nearly went into a coma.

Hope your bun is OK now, hope your relation survives Very Happy

Hubby has survived so far, his wallet might be worse off at the end of this though.

Shadow has eaten his rabbit pellets and some hay, he just keeps lying down and is very subdued!

Just got home, all is well, Shadow is non the worse for hubby's mistake thank goodness.
Vet did show me that you can move the end of the plunger down so it will only dispense the right amount!! I'm sure she thinks I'm stupid!
So hopefully no more vet visits for a month, she said to go back then for his castration!

Thank you everyone cheers

I'm really sorry I didn't see this sooner I cold have saved you a lot of worry Embarassed....the active ingrediant in Panacur, Fenbendaole, is very very safe and in tests rabbits were able to tolerate it at many times the recommended dose over a prolonged period of time without showing any illness or side effects.

This has happened to quite a few people I know and it really isn't anything to panic over.

Thank you Sooz,
Don't worry about not spotting it sooner Very Happy

Something I have noticed though, it's not Panacur specifically for Rabbits that the vet has given me, it says for cats, dogs, kittens and puppies but the dispensing label from the vet has "for Rabbit" printed on it. Does this make any difference? I had a look online line for some last night and saw they do one specially for rabbit's!!

The vet told me to wait another week before giving it him again, so have time to get some more if you think it would be better!

Glad hubby hasn't done my bun any damage though, although he is £100 worse off for the emergency vet Laughing serves him right.

Is it a paste in a tube, it's just I have never seen one for dogs and cats in anything other than the liquid form. If so, does it say what the concentration of Fenbendaole is per graduation on the tube... scratch

Post by AprilGirl Tue Jul 07, 2009 1:08 pm

Yup it's paste in a tube,
It says "each 5g syringe contains 0.94g of fenbendazole". On the leaflet in the box it says 2 syringe graduations per 1kg bodyweight as a single dose (= 100mg fenbendazole/kg bodyweight)

So that would mean 1 graduation would be 50mg, is that right?

Sorry if that has totally confused you Smile
