HELP! URGENT ADVICE NEEDED

Ive got home again today and Charlie has again attacked Annabelle.

Charlie is generally grumpy at the moment - this could be because a) he is generally unsettled with all the comings and going from the vets of b) there is a problem with his abscess and he is in pain and therefore grumpy (he is eating ok though). Unfortunatly I cannot speak to John until Saturday as he is out of the practice :-(

I dont want annie to get any more hurt bless her - the problem being this agression is intermittent.... and they are in love in between.

So do I put charlie in Daisy's pen in the garage and risk breaking their bond altogether I dont feel I can leave them together - but if its just that he is feeling unsettled, this could make things worse. I dont want to put annie in the garage because I dont want her to have any stress. Also I dont want him claiming the shed as his territory while she is gone.

I cant take any time off work to watch them - I just dont know what to do.

Please help - I really am at breaking point with everything right now and im barely holding it together.

If I could at least establish if he was ill or not I would have a better idea of a course of action.....but right now, I cant get him seen, I dont even know if he should be seen.

Could you divide their pen in two? Preferably something they can't get to each other through but so they can still see each other?

I can divide the shed using Daisy's pen, but that would allow only one of them access to the run.

Does Charlie have pain relief? I am wondering if he needs more pain relief.

You could always swap them around in the shed once it is divided.

Whilst I was reading your post, I was thinking exactly this ^

I guess all you can do is alternate them so they both get a turn in the run. I'm not sure what else can be done

Yes he is already on a 10kg dose of metacam twice a day.

I think I will do this tonight, and then Annie can have the run tomorrow morning, and charlie can have it in the afternoon or something....at least until the weekend when I can keep an eye on them.

Although I will have to make sure that one run panel is not too big that it covers up the flap for both.

Will try when I get home. this is just awful :-(

Sounds like you have come up with a workable idea. Bless your heart! This is such a worry for you. I wondered if his male bits might be painful since that is where he attacked Annie. Keep them apart but close for now. Perhaps a little bit of 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' will work if they can see but not cuddle.

I think it is the best thing to do until you are able to see / speak to John. It's only a few days. They might well both be happier with a little bit of time to themselves, so don't beat yourself up

Oh dear Katie, what is Charlie up to I think deviding them so they can still see each other and taking it in turns with the run is the way forward as previous hoppers have said. A bite on the privates is quite a serious attack and I would be worried too. Saying thst Hermione once took a chunk out of Easter's lady bits but all did end well but that due to needing to be spayed. Stress can make them turn on each other so maybe it's just all that is going on that is getting to Charlie. SEnding heaps of hugs to you

Oh Annie was just beside herself - she loves him sooo much. Charlie doesnt seem to care.

The cage is up and they are both settled in - I gave them both extra veg to distract them.

Ive had an email from John - we are going to go up on saturday with charlie for him to get looked at.

i think it's probably frustration of pain etc....can he not be seen by johns co-vet or something
is it possible that it's because of her op that she smells different to him somehow and can you kind of cross scent them sorry if not making too much sense but have had to trammie xx

Oh Katie, I am so sorry to hear of this, you just don't need this on top of their health problems. Once again something like this demonstrates how complicated these little creatures are. The stress involved for us carers is awful at times.

It sounds as though you have come up with the best solution for now. I wonder if Charlie senses that Annie is poorly. I do remember that Gabe became very humpy with Noo when the kidney problem started.

Im so sorry Katie, ive been quite busy and have missed a lot of threads - just having a catch up now.

This is the last thing you need right now and i dont know what to suggest with regards to Charlie seeing a vet or not, but splitting the shed up and giving alternate access to the run is deffinitley the best you can do for now. Im sure the split wont be forever and they will be a pair again, but both of them have been through a lot and the last thing you want is for one of them to get hurt. I know how awful and stressful it must be though. Thinking of you. and nose rubs to the buns.

Its such a hard thing to decide because we spend all our time saying poorly buns need to be together, or a poorly bun with their cage mate etc. The thing is, sometimes logic goes out of the window and we have to go with our gut feeling.

Domino is on his own, and I dont like it, but he prefers it because he is poorly. With two poorly buns its difficult.

Charlie could be lashing out because he is unwell OR because Annie is and vice versa. Jelly used to go for Peanut sometimes because she knew he was poorly, and she didnt understand it. But with Domino, all she wants to do is groom him and he hates it. So just go with your gut hun. x
