Ruby - Any advice or vibes welcome UD, I'm confused Empty Ruby - Any advice or vibes welcome UD, I'm confused

Post by thumpersmum Wed Sep 02, 2009 7:49 pm

On bank Holiday Monday I had to take Ruby to the vet, she had early signs of bloat. Fortunately we spotted it early and she had treatment. I took her for a follow-up yesterday, and although she had no signs of bloat and was eating she was in a lot of pain, to the point Paula couldn't examine her. I came home with abx and pain relief. Last night Ruby stopped eating, and hasn't eaten since.

I took her back to the vet today, she is still in pain, the medication isn't helping and she still cannot be examined properly. We know the pain is after the stomach/kidney area, but not sure after that. We're working on the basis of an abcess type infection so she's on stronger pain relief, antibiotics and I'm syringe feeding. I'm really worried as she is just sitting there, not doing anything. She looks so miserable, and even Thumper seems to be getting a bit depressed as well. He keeps lying with her, grooming her, and she just isn't responding to him either.

I've tried to tempt her with everything and anything, but she doesn't want to know, I really don't know what to do. Any spare vibes going, or any advice would be really apreciated here.

No, we did think about that one, so the vet checked the teeth, they're fine.

Thanks guys. We have a slight improvement, she will eat carrot top, but only if you actually feed it her, she will not eat anything else at all and we've tried everything and anything. She's a little brighter in herself not looking quite so distressed. I don't think we're out of the woods yet, but I think the pain relief and abx may be starting to work.

Is she having probiotics alongside the antibiotics Lynne? Also what antibiotics has she been prescribed and how long is the course?

If she is only eating carrot then it might be worth combining the probiotics with a fiber supplement and giving her fiberplex as well, to encourage gut motility.

Ruby is much improved at last. she is now eating a normal diet, albeit less than would be expected.

Sooz, she's been on daily Marbocyl and metacam with Depocillin everyother day since this started. The vet saw her earlier in the week and was finally able to examine her properly. They are reasonably sure she has some sort of bladder issue as she is still very tender in that area although there is no sign of any mass. The vet has also suggested we try giving cystaid.

I'm so pleased that she is finally improving, Thumper is too, he was really fretting about her and becoming quite depressed. I know she's improving, she bit me when I tried to give her the metacam today!!!

I think I was given some Cystaid (or something similar) once, it's usually given to dogs I think. Never use did and cannot think for the life of me where it went....it was a pot of capsules.

Yes, I know she's not being agressive as such, it's simply she doesn't like us restraining her and then forcing this vile stuff in her mouth. Unfortunately it does hurt though doesn't it? It shows how strong their teeth are though. Laughing

Thanks Jay, I will keep you up to date. I'm going back to the vet on Monday so we'll see what progress then. It could only happen to me, Thumper with dodgy kidney issues, now Ruby with bladder problems! Sad Sad

We went to see the vet yesterday and she is not happy with Ruby's progress. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Although she is eating much better and much more lively (the monster I know and love who pinches food from Thumper's mouth!!), she is still very sore on examiniation. She has also started to drink a lot so we are wondering if there is a kidney problem too. I'm waiting for the results of blood tests to see if that gives any clue what's going on, and then' we'll reassess. Hopefully they will be back later today or if not, tomorrow

I must admit I'm confused, she seems so well on the one hand, but on the other she still seems quite uncomfortable. SadSadSadSadSadSadSad

I think the blood tests are definately a good idea, I had Charlotte's Chance tested before she adopted him as he drank and pee'd excessively all the time.

Hope it's nothing serious.
