Cold, Dark and Wet
hello, ive not been on in ages, some of you may remember me back in may, my rabbit got put to sleep on my birthday, i got a new 1 rescued from sspca, (still to upload pics lol)
well im just wondering as its getting into the colder, wetter darker months what yous do to keep your bunnys extra cossy? i am planning on puting banjo;s hutch into the shed to keep him out of the wind and rain, or are they happy outside? and i have a run from pets at hoem which is like metal fences tht u put poles through to make amy shape size u want i have it along my shed to act like a wall so i can make it bigger, but i need to move it aroudn in winter as it gets to muddy, do yous still put them out everyday? or just on nice days? if its horrible i usually keep him in and make sure he has planty food and hay to munch on, only shelter he has is a cat carrier (hes to big for teh little bunny houses) but i dont put bedding in it cuz he makes a mess lol and he has a green tube than u can change the shape of,
im just wondering where yous keep yours in teh winter and all that
any advice will be greatly appreciated
thanks
Alex

Re: Cold, Dark and Wet
My buns are outside all year in a compound where they freerange during the day and are locked in their hutch at night. Because they are outside all year, they develop really thick coats for the winter and I slightly increase their pellets so they get a bit fatter and thus warmer.
I cover their hutch with an old carpet, a huge sheet of bubblewrap and then a tarpaulin to keep it dry and at night I drape the bubblewrap over the open wire to cut down drafts and keep it dry in case the rain blows in.
I fill their sitting area with hay and make sure their bedroom has lots of hay too (although they tend to sit looking out of their hutch at all times of night).
They have been through two winters like this and have been just fine. They are hardier than they look as long as they have good thick coats and have been acclimatised and you make sure their hutch is dry and not damp at all.

Re: Cold, Dark and Wet
As long as your bunny has plenty lof straw and shelter, it should be fine, but you can't beat a friend to keep you warm and not to mention give you company on those dark lonely nights x
Re: Cold, Dark and Wet
hye, i use shreaded paper for its bed is tht ok? i just find it les dusty, but i have never had a rabit liek him before his bed is always covered in poo, my otheres just did it in 1 corner he keeps the outside bit clean and the bed dirty, i give him straw but he doesnt eat it as much, and he gets pellets i prefere them so they dont leave bits out, and he sometimes get an apple of the tree or a carrot but mostly just grass from his run,
if i can get stuff to stop teh wet and wind getting in i'll do tht but if not il just put him in the shed lol, will be easier to clean the hucth if its raining and all tht lol

Re: Cold, Dark and Wet
My buns are the same as yours and use their lovely warm cosy bedroom as a toilet! I find that litter training them really helps with the cleaning.
I put two cat litter boxes into the bed and line them with newspaper and nice fresh hay. Don't use straw because it can be jaggy and they might get it in their eye and end up with an ulcer. Mine like to eat while they poo. I give them a load in their hay rack during the summer, but in winter, fill their livingroom with hay too.
Mine are free all day to graze for grass and they love apple wood, so I give them the odd branch to chew on as it is good for their teeth. They can have pear wood too. They half a teacup of pellets in the morning and then veggies in the evening (as bribery to go to bed!).

Re: Cold, Dark and Wet
i think if i can get them in teh shed i will do tht, if i have stuff which will blow in teh wind and make noise, im in the room upstairs just up from them and the dogs are in teh kitchen at night and bark at anything thats makes a noise so would prefere not to be woken up everynight from teh stupid dogs lol, im goin to carry on puting him out in teh morning, 7am before i leave for skul, and in at night usualy bout 11ish, i only sometimes put a handful of food in teh run for him but he usually just gets his pellets at night, and the grass all day, was also wondering if any1 had any idea hw i could make a decent shelter for him outside, teh cat carrier is good but has the holes in it around teh top for liek ventilation and it gets really wet inside sometimes, i also face the door away from teh wind, oh and i was also wondering what veg is good for them i give carrots sometimes and apples, ar ethese ok or have they to much sugar? he likes kale but dont always have it, i dont give him that much veg just as hes out so much i thought the grass would be enough,
hi jay, he is doing very well, hes got into his routine, sits at the door waiting to get out, but on rainy days can tell hed rather be in his nice house lol, on those days he just eats his hay lol think he likes bein in a nice hutch and run rather than in a sspca cage for liek 6 months i think it was

Re: Cold, Dark and Wet
my buns stay out, they survived -20 last winter, along with the piggies.
They prefer colder weather to hot!
I put lots and lots of straw, they even go out to play in the snow.
