Bare minimum bunny's can survive on
I was watching about all the people cut off in Scotland and Northern England, and wondered how you'd get the buns through a period of no supplies?
Does anyone know...
How long they should go on just hay?
If no hay, how long on pellets and/or veg?
What would you recommend if no hay?
What would you recommend if no veg?
I know they can get by without pellets, so that wouldn't concern me too much.
I'm guessing that if no hay, high fibre pellets would suffice for a while?

Re: Bare minimum bunny's can survive on
I think people who are in these conditions worry about how they are going to eat before they worry about their bunnies!
I know that bunnies can live a whole life without pellets, only by eating hay...
I supose they can last a while with just pellets or veggies, althought they might end up realy fat or sick...

Good topic Jay.
Personally, I live about half a mile from the hay supplier, so could walk if I had help to carry a bale back. [Its just in a covered shed of a friends so I can help myself.]
The pellets I could get from Countrywide [2 mins walk round the corner] or the pet shop [10 mins walk up the town] If the pellets were unavailable [stores not open for eg.] I would give them as much hay as poss and just hope for the best, we also have a mini mart shop a minute walk up the road and at the moment Im giving porridge oats to my elderly boy.

Re: Bare minimum bunny's can survive on
I would worry about the animals before me! ! Interesting points. I have run out of hay and am waiting a delivery, so I am kinda intrigued to know the answers.
Re: Bare minimum bunny's can survive on
I guese if worst came to worse we could always cover a patch of garden for them to have some fresh grass instead of veggies???

Re: Bare minimum bunny's can survive on
I guess grass would do for a while, I can get that from the park as I dont have a garden. I would worry more about Bertie than myself TBH.
This is gonna sound odd, but although I live on the outskirts of a city (albeit a small one) my bunny supply shops are a minimum of 3 miles away. I use 3 different ones, but that petshop is the nearest, and I don't normally use that if can avoid it.
Because I live on a hill, not near a main road, we do get stuck here sometimes. If I didn't have suppplies already in, I'd be a bit concerned about getting them in icy conditions. I have a fruit n veg shop 1/2 an hours walk away, so could get veg n herbs

Re: Bare minimum bunny's can survive on
I have to be honest and say I have 2/3 large bags of food I don't like to feed them, so i have excel, A&P and a naturals forridge and feed, My reason being as that they occasionally get a bit as a treat, but as it's not their normal food, it doesn't get used up, Therefore, if for whatever reason i cannot get out to buy more SS when i run drastically low then I have plenty of food as an emergency, I find this works better as I know I don't want to use it really, so I always have spare. Whenever I kept a spare SS bag I just used it like normal and then was struggling when i couldn't get out to get a new bag.
Re: Bare minimum bunny's can survive on
^^ That's quite a neat idea Kirsty. Like you, I just use SS, I always get 2 big bags, but I wouldn't always keep one in reserve. I saw naturals Forrage n feed for the first time the other day, is it any good, do they like it?
Re: Bare minimum bunny's can survive on
thankfully i would never have that problem, we have our own online pet store, so if push really did come to shove and i ran out of the pellets i feed them, i would just have to change, hay we have tones of, veggies may be the only real problem, as the supermarkets in the next village over
very intresting topic though
jan, it soulds like your near where my sister used to live

Re: Bare minimum bunny's can survive on
My OH insisted that I bought an extra bale of hay at the beginning of December because it was winter and in case of bad weather. He has been exceptionally smug now! He came back from P@H the other day with two bags of pellets for them. I asked him to buy one bag but he bought two.
