Guess who got home!
I brought Kenzo back from the animal hospital yesterday evening, god he seems happy to be home, but things are realy complicated.
Poor Kenzo looks terrible, he smells bad and his head is completly tilted to the right...
He has to be separated from Chewy, because he gets scared if anyone comes too close. He is deaf for now, it's not sure that he will ever be able to hear again.
He has to take 4 medicine a day (some twice a day), I have to pinch him once a day, he needs to eat LOTS of greens, pellets and hay...
And we even had to borrow a nebulizer machine from the vet (that's expensive too) i have to put him the machine twice a day for 20 minuts.
It's ALOT of work, I had to label and write down everything.
The total cost of all the care/medication/vet visits goes up to about 2000 euros...
But I would do anything for my little boy.
Even though it's not 100% sure he'll live, I'm positive
I'm going back to the vet next monday to know how the treatment is working.
However I'm not sure what's going to happen at my exam on thursday, so much happened this last week between Cookie and Kenzo, I didn't even have time to study!

Re: Guess who got home!
If his head is tilted, are you sure it's not EC like Rufus has?
Does he get Panacur?
What medicine do you have to give?

Re: Guess who got home!
Maybe it's the same thing, I'm not sure because the names in spanish are diferent... The medicine he has is (in spanish):
- Baytril
-Gabapentina
-Metacam
-Fortam
and in the nebulizer machine I have to put:
-Suero
-Flumil <- that stinks of rotten eggs SO bad the whole living room smells.
This is the treatment for inner ear infection and respiratory problems, if it dosn't work, on monday the vet will do tests to see if he dosn't have a parasite (still can't remember the name).
Also, his head isn't ALWAYS tilted, sometimes he puts it normaly and sometimes it falls to the right.

Re: Guess who got home!
Fortam (Ceftazidima) is the same as Baytril, so I wonder why give them both?
Gabapentina is used for epilepsy and for neuropathic pain.
Maybe it's not EC, otherwise you should have given Panacur already, it has to be started real soon.

Re: Guess who got home!
I've just been reading your other thread about Kenzo. I'm so sorry you've had an awful time with your boy. Poor bunny
I really hope he begins to pick up soon. You're doing a great job; it's such a worry when our furries are unwell!
Good luck with your exam too.

Re: Guess who got home!
It really sounds, especially with the nebuliser and other medication, that poor Kenzo has a severe Pasteurella infection which would indeed cause all these horrible symptoms. That said, your vets do really seem to know what they are doing, or at least be very convinced of their diagnosis.
The fact he is still obviously eating with relish is a great sign too. Sending masses of (((vibes))) to you both. xxx

Re: Guess who got home!
Thanks Sooz, Pasteurella is what the vat said! I couldn't remember with all that other stuff I had to remember
Kenzo is having his 2nd nebuliser session of the day as I'm posting this, he seems to enjoy it even though it smell bad... After that, I'll have to pinch him and give him his meds and that's it for today.
Poor Kenzo is having a hard time being handled, all these meds are driving him as crazy as me.

Re: Guess who got home!
Is the pinching to check his hydration levels?
Pasteurella is a really common infection in rabbits but quite often it is just carried with out causing any issues (asymptomatical). However, it can cause a range of issues such as respiratory infections, abcesses and ear infections to name a few and will spread quite virulently.
Have the vets taken a swab to do a culture and sensitivity analysis with? It may be there is a more appropriate antibiotic if you can isolate the specific strain Kenzo is infected with.
