Faye being spayed tomorrow
Faye is being spayed tomorrow. Given the freezing temperatures at the moment I am wondering if she will be OK going back outside afterwards? She is bonded with Furby and he will be going to the vet as well as company for her. He has a lovely thick coat but hers isn't so thick.
They were indoors being bonded recently but I didn't have any heating on and it wasn't so cold outside then so the difference wasn't as great as it is now. Even with no heating, my house is much warmer than outside.
Am really undecided what to do. I don't want to keep Faye and Furby in all winter as the run is too small for permanent use and they were very fed-up inside. Outside they have a hutch and a run combined.
My snugglesafes are old and not very efficient but I could go and buy a new one tomorrow or use a brick as I have seen suggested on here. Their sleeping compartment has straw and hay and a blankie in it - but they seem to prefer sitting in their run:(
When Furby was neutered I put him back outside straight away but it wasn't as cold then and I know a spay is a bigger op than a neuter.
Faye didn't like being inside and kept escaping from the run. I don't want her to freeze outside but don't want to stress her and risk stasis by moving her inside either. Help!!!!

Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
I would keep her inside to be honest. I think I remember Sooz saying that their body temperature can take a while to get back to normal after a GA. Also if she is indoors, you can see if she is eating and pooping.
When mine were done, I brought a small hutch into the back porch and kept them there for a week. Just made sure that everything was OK.

Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
Maybe keep her and Furby inside at least initially until she starts behaving like herself? It takes my girl Josephine ten days on average to completely get back to herself after a GA. If your Faye is feeling a bit poorly, she shouldn't mind being inside as much as she usually does.
It might be best to play it by ear. If she's not distressed by being inside, keep her there. Sending vibes for a good recovery from the spay

Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
Thanks for replying.
My worry is that my heating is either on or off. I can't turn individual radiators on or off and am worried about pipes and things freezing if I turn the heating off at the moment (and my cats leaving home!)
My other option is leaving her in tonight and then tomorrow putting her and Furby in my small, spare hutch where they have no access to a run so she can't climb. The hutch is small enough for me to fill it with straw, hay and a blanket and snugglesafe(s).
I had Pippa (kitten) spayed earlier this month and she was very subdued and quiet for the first couple of hours after I got her home but after that was her usual, hectic self. I kept her in overnight but let her out the next day (she never goes far anyway). She was fine and her scar has healed nicely.
I will speak to my vet and see what he recommends. I don't have the space to keep Furby and Faye indoors until spring really as they would be in my lounge in a run that I have no space to make any bigger.
Bunnies are such a worry!!!

Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
Good luck with Faye, I would keep her in, and put her in the coolest room you have, I wouldn't think (but don't know) that a couple of days indoors will mean she can't go back outside, see what the vet says. Hope it all goes well
Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
Have just 'phoned vet and she is fine
What a relief. My poor client this morning (mental health) had to listen to me worrying about my bunny. Fortunately, she is an animal lover so understood.
Can pick her up at 3.45 pm so will leave work early. Have been to PAH and bought a new snugglesafe and to Tesco and got some fresh spring greens and carrots for her to nom on. I just want her back so I can give her a big (and gentle) hug.
Have to try and take a photo of her zip to send to Angie (BARC) so she knows I've had her spayed. I hope Faye co-operates!!! If not, it will be a copy of the bill.
My next client will have me all impatient waiting to go and pick Faye up. I really am useless when one of my fur family are at the vet!!

Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
I kept Faye in last night but have just put her back outside. It has snowed here but I opened the lounge window this morning and it is freezing in there. I've filled the sleeping part of the hutch with shredded paper, hay and a blankie and a snuggle safe. Faye has chosen to sit in the cold run
She is eating and pooping as usual and seems absolutely fine. Her wound looks sore this morning but Furby's did to start with so I am not worried. I will check her regularly. I am not on-call tonight so can reheat the snugglesafe as necessary.
Furby was getting stressed being inside and he didn't eat much this morning so I have taken the risk to put them both back outside. I'm not working much today so can keep checking on Faye. When I tried to check her zip she jumped onto my shoulders and down my back. It was difficult to reach her. She is very wriggly. I was trying to take a photo for Angie (BARC) but no chance Will send the receipt instead.

Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
Glad she is ok hun you must be so relieved. Silly bunnies always prefer sitting in the snow to being somewhere warm. Numpties...
Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
I went out last night about 12.30 am and Furby was up in the hutch and Faye was in the run in the cold. It was snowing and absolutely freezing out there. I put a snuggle safe in and crawled in the run (in dressing gown) to pick Faye up and put her under her blankie and hay in their bedroom by the snugglesafe. When I went back out to check, she had moved, but only to the main part of the hutch.
It snowed overnight so is quite deep here now and Faye was in the run this morning again!!! I am so worried about her but I think locking her in the hutch (even if I could do it as there is no door to the ramp) would stress her out. She did come up to the hutch for breakfast but is back in the run again now
I can't get into work today so at least I am here to keep an eye on her. I worry she will get hypothermia.

How is she doing now hun?
For some reason they just love the snow dont they.
I think if she was cold surely she would go in and snuggle next to furby?

Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
She seems OK. I went out before bed last night and changed their water bowl. Didn't bother with the snugglesafe - gave it to Peggy and Sue who were snuggled in their sleeping compartment. Faye spends all her time in the run, apart from when I put food in the hutch. I guess she knows what she is doing but she is actually sitting in the snow!! She has got to be cold on her bottom.
Have just dug the car out so going to brave the roads in a minute and go to work. Need to get the buns some fresh veg anyway.
Faye is very lively and looks OK but I still worry lots about her. A spay is a big operation. I'd think she was struggling with the ramp with her wound but she bounces up there at food time and bounces around her run when I try and catch her to check her wound. It is difficult to catch her so I think she is feeling OK.
Thank you for asking

Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
It sounds like she is doing fine. If she was unwell she would be huddled looking ill. If she is able to bounce out of your way when you want to check her, she must be feeling fitter. They are incredible after an operation.

Re: Faye being spayed tomorrow
Cleaned them out this morning and picked Faye up to check her. Her wound is still red but doesn't look infected and she is certainly lively enough. She just didn't appreciate being turned on her back - am glad she is so small.
My vet is coming over on Tuesday to myxi six of my buns, including Faye, so I will get him to check her then. I've noticed Pippa (kitten) still has one stitch left which I can't take out without forcing it (which I won't risk) so I need to get him to do that too. Furby had one set of stitches left too after his neuter.
It's warmer here today so I am happy seeing Furby and Faye in their run
