Unusual spay recovery? Empty Unusual spay recovery?

Post by Nagila Thu Sep 15, 2011 6:06 pm

Our bunny Benezia (giant papillon, doe) just got spayed on tuesday and we read everywhere that she might lose her appetite and be quiet for the first few days, but despite that information she is more lively than ever! We try to keep anything dangerous out of her reach and confine her only to her pen, but she follows us as we pass by and follows our hands if we stop petting her. The exact opposite happened to our other bunny Garrus (flemish giant, buck), so he is much more relaxed now and spends about 2 hours more a day just sleeping or lying around while he was much more active before Benezia got spayed (he is not yet neutered). We check their urine and droppings all the time, but they're all normal. Is this normal? And how long should we wait before finally letting them play together?

I am assuming from your post that they have not previously been together. Bonds can be quite difficult so you want to make sure that Benezia is completely healed before they are together. For the easiest bond you should get Garrus done as well. He will be more interested in mounting whilst he is entire and she will not appreciate the attention. It is not uncommon for people to report that their buns become more agitated immediatley following neutering but they calm right down over the next 6 weeks.

They haven't been directly together, but their pens are right next to each other, so they already got used to each others smell and they sleep close to each other all the time Smile
I wouldn't say Benezia is agitated, she just loves attention much more now whilst before she was very timid.
The vet told us it would be better to spay Benezia first and then get Garrus neutered, but we didn't know he would bother Benezia. I guess we should just wait until Garrus is also neutered before letting them be together.

I am sure someone who has done more bonds than me will give their opinion in a bit but even when the signs are good through the pen is good it can be very different when they are face to face. Having both neutered gives them the best chance of a smooth fast bond.

Hi There,

Welcome to HH x x

Cant wait to hear more about your lovely bunnies.

You really do need to give it at least six weeks after he is neutered before they get put together. She needs to be properly healed and he will still be feeling frisky until he is neutered and this means that they are likely to fight when put together.

It may be that she has been through a horrible experience and wants extra human comfort, hence following you round for fusses.

Each bun is an individual and recover in different ways. So long as she is eating and pooing she will be fine. Its a good idea to keep her as calm as you can so that she doesnt strain her wound/stitches.

She does eat well Razz we have hay in their pens at all times and in the morning and evening we give them some vegetables and herbs and keep them in their pen during feeding time (we're not sure if this is the best way).
When we're sleeping or when we're at school they're in their pen also, but luckily we only have school about 2 hours per day and the rest of the day we let them out about 30 mins each at a time.. then they just chill by our side or sleep by the other bunny Smile
These are our first bunnies and it's sooo cute how different they are Very Happy Garrus goes banana's for food and will do anything for it, whether it be pellets (we don't give them a lot of pellets) or just vegetables or herbs, but most of all he loves banana's. We took advantage of this and now he knows a lot a tricks Razz Benezia was more timid/relaxed, but now she gets excited when we come home and always runs to us so we would pet her and for some reason she seems to love taking her medicine... which makes our lives much easier of course Very Happy

Awwwww they sound gorgeous!

Teaching them tricks is a fab thing to do, it keeps them busy which is always good. The more time spent with them the happier they will be.

Sounds like they are lovely happy bunnies. x x

We are all totally bunny mad here so feel free to join in the posts and enjoy!

Hi there and welcome to HH :waves:

It sounds like they will be fine together, but you just have to be careful putting together a previously bonded pair after a separation and after neutering. It does take a while for the healing process to be complete and they will both benefit from a rest to heal. Then you can introduce them carefully to each other in a neutral area and see how they react. There may be a lot of mounting but that it just to establish dominance. Hopefully, if you are lucky, they will just slip back into their previous bond, but you just need to be cautious until you know that is the case.

Today we took her to the vet for a check up and he said she was recovering very well Smile he also said just to be sure to wait 2 more weeks before putting them together so she would be completely healed. And also after putting them together check if Garrus really bothers her to see if the neuter is really necessary :S
What are your suggestions? Should we wait or just go ahead and neuter him right away?

I would say neuter him as well. Not just because of the bothering issue but because male rabbits have some really disgusting habits when they are not neutered. They are prone to spraying all over the place including over their humans. And they are prone to mounting not just female rabbits but legs and balls and anything else that looks inviting. These behaviours are much easier to prevent by neutering than to correct later on. One these behaviours start they are harder to stop even if the rabbit is then neutered. This leaflet from the RWAF explains everything

Ditto! We have just Buttons on his own, but we got him neutered because we didn't want him to start spraying or getting aggressive!! He has become the most loving bunny since!!! Love

thanks Very Happy we'll get him done as soon as we can afford it haha
we noticed that he still does this thing that he goes around rubbing his pheromones all over the place and Benezia doesn't.
We noticed they both love sunflowers, so that's how we keep Benezia busy and not moving around too much. Sunflowers and apple tree branches Smile
