Hubby and I trimmed Thumper's claws l for the first time. We had a
time getting him in the 'bunny burrito' but finally managed to
get him wrapped. His nails are dark so I went slowly. We did well
until the last nail. OMG that poor bunny...I clipped it just a tiny bit
too close and it bled all over Hubby, all over the couch and we
couldn't get the nail into the corn starch to stop it.

He wriggled free and ran and hid where we couldn't get him. He
got it to stop bleeding by licking it. I feel SO guilty about hitting
the quick and causing him so much pain! Even an apologetic apple
slice didn't calm him!

He's gotten even though. He found a piece of paper to chew and drug
it under the bed where he can't be reached and is chewing it loudly so
I canna rest! I just feel like a bad mummy.

I have been there too its horrible isnt it. I tend to think that the guilt they inflict on us is worse than the nail itself.

I know exactly what you mean though, I got really upset when we did the same to Daisy.

Sending nose rubs, hugs, and hopes that whatever he is now munching isnt important. x x

It happens to the best of us, dont worry too much, though i fully understand the guilt. So much blood for such a little thing.

I was clipping my foster girl Liesl's nails before she went to the vet, gave her a bleeder and the vet had to bandage her because it was dripping so badly Embarassed .

Im certain Thumper will forgive you Smile

In future if you have a small torch get someone to shine the torch at the back of the nail and this shows where the quick is and so you can trim above the quick. That's what we do on dark nails but it need's two persons of course to do this.

Soap or cornstarch or flour should stop the blood if you hit the quick.

You can buy what they call a 'Styptic Pen' they are a medicated stick that you rub on the area to promote healing. They are worth having in just in case Smile

Hugs I'm too scared to do Florences nails because they are dark too.

Hope you're both ok

Thanks for all the support! I felt like such a bad mommy! I hurt the poor little creature. I
had Hubby help me with the proceedure. I made him watch the HH nail cutting video that
Jay had made with his former bunny, Bertie.

I was going to ask about this. We have one but didn't know if it was bunny safe. Thanks
for the trimming tips. Even though Hubby's shirt got a lot of blood on it, this was nothing
compared to when I cut Lady's one time and she bled everywhere. Took an entire bottle
of peroxide to get the blood out of the carpet and off the walls. Yes, the walls. Looked
like arterial spray from a crime scene. I had no idea a mini-Holland lop had that much blood.
The vet just laughed, good naturedly though. He said that in someways rabbits were tough
but yet in so many, many ways so very fragile.

Again, thanks for the support and the info. Hugs

Oh what a horrible experience for you all. Hugs :h

I am just so grateful that mine being outside buns - and presently digging their way to Australia - won't need me to do any trimming! Laughing
