Really upset with the vet u/d saw the other vet tonight

I took Archie to the vets today. Some of you may remember he is my foster bun with a jaw abcess. I got the wrong day though and the bunny savvy vet had been allowed a day off So I explain to her that he has recently had a dental but not picked up properly and I felt we needed a course of antibiotics. She then gave me a long lecture about jaw abcesses and the pain he would be in, all of which I am aware of, that being why he has daily metacam!! She told me that I should have him pts. I said I didn't feel we were at that point yet and needed ab's. So she offered Baytril, I told her she was wasting her time and I wanted Flagyl and Depocillin please. Grudgingly she gave me them, although I need to wait until tomorrow for the depocillin. At no point did she even look in his mouth to see if there was another problem or even review his previous records. Then I got charged £21 for the consultation!!! I came out fuming and we are going back tomorrow to see rabbit savvy vet and tell him that I don't expect to be treated like an idiot and charged for a consultation that she had no input in at all!! Refund please or I'll be finding a new vet thanks!!! But really poor Archie, too much hassle so just get rid!!! He is a happy boy most of the time, I will pts when his eye's tell me that's enough not some stuck up woman who is a so called vet!!

This is disgusting - I would be fuming too. Who is the vet in charge? You need to speak to them about your treatment and perhaps mention that you are on a forum which has access to specialists like John Chitty so know that this kind of treatment is available for rabbits and are also savvy yourself and are appalled that this vet suggested pts. Someone without so much knowledge may have put their trust in this vet and not questioned it, robbing a bunny of a potentially healthy life. I would have been livid hun. You definately need to take this further.

[b]I think some of these vets need bringing down a peg or two I know medication is expensive but I found when ringing round to find a vet to do fizzles snip that the costs ranged from £60.00 to £240.00 why sutch a big difference. If a vet cant be bothered and sugests pts as an easy option then they are only in the job for the mony not the care and welfare of the animals. Hope your bunn gets what he needs and makes a swift recovery then train him to bite vets

I get on really well with the bunny savvy vet and as it's his name on the door not hers I assume he is more senior The lovely lady on reception was really worried that the vet had upset me and was also pretty disgusted that she said pts as she knows Archie too and his history. She asked me if I wanted to put in a complaint so I'm thinking maybe I'm not the first to be a bit peed off. I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow!! Will be interesting if I'm still as cross

Flipping heck, that's awful, I don't blame you for being annoyed and upset, please complain

Do put in a complaint and ask them to have it written into your records that you are not to be sent in to a consultation with the vet that has upset you again. I have had to do this in the past and, whilst not pleasent, it was for something which like you I did not feel could be let go without comment.

What a horrible experience! Definitely have it written down that you are not to be given that vet again. At the place I go to, there is only one rabbit vet. One of the others once told me both my rabbits were ill and needed emergency surgery! (completely false). I insist on the rabbit vet now.

Sad to say, vets can be a real hit and miss affair.

This is atrocious. Make sure the savvy vet knows of the way you were treated.

Well I took Archie back this evening, the vet who I have been seeing since September with him saw us as usual. He felt that Archie's weight was ok and he had seen a lot worse (probably my Chaz in the next carrier who had an appt too ) When I first took him on his was 2.5kg and we wanted to keep him slightly overweight to cope with times like these. He weighed in at 2kg today which I don't think is awful for a dwarf lop. He agreed that the infection had flared up again and the depocillin and flagyl is again the way to go. In no way did he feel that Archie was a pts case at this time and thought he was in good condition. I told him how unhappy I was with what the vet had said yesterday and he was a little cagey in his response but said that this vet is a good vet but sometimes she gets a bee in her bonnet about a pet suffering or being overweight etc and has a rant at the owner, so I took that to mean that I am not the first to be upset by her!!! However, if I wasn't experienced he would now be dead or just on baytril so would be pts next week anyway as that was going to do nothing! Todays vet then just told me that she was in on a Thursday and every other Saturday and to make sure that I didn't go in on those days. My daughter then reminded me that it was the rubbish vet we took her rat to with a chest infection and she just gave her a bog standard baytril dose. It was only after chatting on a forum with other rat owners I realised she was on the wrong dose and needed steroids too.

I feel happier that I've not misjudged how Archie is and I'm so glad I went with my instincts but I do feel that this other vet needs to know that she was wrong! I think I am going to put a complaint in writing so she has to address these issues instead of them being swept under the carpet. I still feel really upset at being accused of being cruel. I have spent hours making sure Archie is comfortable and the rescue he is fostered out from do so much too. I came back with so many herbs and anything he could ever need yesterday to help his plight. I will know when his eyes tell me he has had enough not some jumped up ignorant vet!!!

I think you really need to write the letter. Its not only about the vet telling you to have him PTS, its also about prescribing Meds which are not up to the job.

This vet does need to take some time to read up on medications and treatments before any animals suffer because this vet doesnt know the correct course of action. Especially since this is the second case that you are aware of.

Yes, I quite agree. There are eplenty of people out there who really are cruel I am sad to say, to have a go at you, who so obviously isn't is a disgrace. Please keep us posted.
