EEEEEW! Maggots in the litterbox alert!
Cleaning out Chewy's hutch today I saw maggots in his litterbox (I'm guessing fly larvae since we have flies), and not just 3 or 4 of them, ALOT!
I checked his bum the best I could but I didn't see any on him, just in the litter. His tray is cleaned twice a week, but lately my mom and my brother have been doing it, since they have to get used to taking care of Chewy before I leave to France, so I'm not sure they cleaned it well enough last time.
We clean the tray with warm water and vinegar, and rub some vinegar on the hutch floor once a week.
Isn't that enough? Do we have to clean the tray more often? What else can I do to prevent flies from getting to him? I've seen so many horrors online with flystrike I think I'd get a heart attack if Chewy had it.
Also I didn't see any on his bum but I'm so paranoid there might be that I didn't see! I check his bum every other day, I'm gonna try doing it everyday...
Is there somekind of medication to prevent flystrike?

You can get stuff called Rearguard which you paint onto the rabbit's vulnerable bits and it acts as a barrier. However, I think with the kind of climate that you have in Spain that you would be better to clean the litter trays daily rather than put chemicals onto Chewy. If you are sure that Chewy is clean in himself, making sure that the litter trays are cleaned more often would be much more help.

Re: EEEEEW! Maggots in the litterbox alert!
I'll try to organize myself with my mom to arrange days when I clean the tray and days when she does.
We all work or study all day so we'll have to find a balance... The tray isn't usually very dirty though when we clean it so it surprised me to see so many maggots.
He's outside in the morning and evening (a little less lately he hasen't been wanting to come out so much) so he pretty much only uses the litter tray at night and in the afternoon.
He never sits or sleep in it, he only goes in to do his business.
I'll check his bum everyday, I really didn't see anything and his bum is dry and clean, but with all the white fur it's dificult to be 100% sure.
I'll ask the vet about this Rearguard thing and ask for his opinion about it too.

I think with your climate it makes things even harder. What you need to look out for is that he is keeping himself clean and that he doesn't have any poos or sticky night pellets stuck to his fur. If his litter tray is wet or dirty, it can leave a scent of urine on his fur and that can attract flies. So keeping his trays cleaner, making sure he is cleaning himself and that his diet is not making his poos squidgy etc., will really help and you may not even need Rearguard.
I had a rabbit who got flystrike and I never noticed it at all. She had had a dodgy tummy and her poos were a bit loose. What I didn't appreciate was how dangerous this was. Eventually I noticed her sitting in the hutch looking unhappy. I took her to the vet and they could see the flystrike. It looks like tiny grains of salt. She was cleaned up but unfortunately, the shock and toxins that the maggots make were too much for her system and she died a day or so later. It was a great shock to me and something I would never want to experience again.

Re: EEEEEW! Maggots in the litterbox alert!
I'm so sorry about your bun.
It just looks like grains of salt? How am I supposed to spot that on Chewy, I've been looking for the actual maggots on him!
Also a while ago we installed strips of fly paper in the kitchen to protect our food and I sort of stole one to put above Chewy's hutch ( ) but the flies don't get caught in it at all for some reason.
In the kitchen they do, but on the one near Chewy there are only 2 small ones on it. ...

Re: EEEEEW! Maggots in the litterbox alert!
thanks, I'll do all I can.
Now I'm a bit worried though because Chewy has been a bit lethargic lately.
I was blaming it on the heat, I hope it's not that...

Re: EEEEEW! Maggots in the litterbox alert!
If you put Lavendar plants around his home, that should help keep flies away, and I would be changing his litter every day at the mo, just to be safe. At least twice daily bum checks are a must.
It's worrth remebering though that if Chewy is clean and dry, it's more likely that the flies are attracted to the urine in his accomm. rather than him, however, it's a risk, and extra vigilence is probably a good thing at the mo.

Re: EEEEEW! Maggots in the litterbox alert!
We live near a farm so suffer bad with flies in the summer.
I clean their trays out daily, we have fly tape hung up and those sticky ones that look like flowers stuck on the windows.
If I see a fly come in the house I'm like a crazy lady till I get it, and then my fly trap plant gets lunch!!!

I arm myself with an electric fly swat at all times! The fact that it is shaped like a tennis racket is really satisfying too! I hate flys, they are the spawn of the devil!
