Litterbox problem! Empty Litterbox problem!

Post by Lottie Sat Jan 09, 2010 2:11 pm

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I'm sorry if this isn't the right place.
My bunnies have no problem using their litterbox for peeing, but when it comes to poops, they do it all over the place! HBWS
It's strange, because when they were babies they did everything in the litterbox! (they are both neutered).
Any tips on how to teach them to poop in the litterbox please?
thanks!
(Also please forgive my bad english in my posts, this isn't my first language).

Hey Lottie, you are in the right oakce and as for your English! It is fantastic, I wouldn't have known it wasn't your first language! You put some of us to shame!

It is hard to get them to do everything in their tray. I only have one who is perfect at it and he came ready done! I know that Jay's bunny is extremely good at using his tray, hopefully he will be along with some better ideas than me!

I have to say I do think some bunnies don't ever take to it. They will usually always wee there, but I have a long handled dustpan and brush that gets alot of work if my old man Chance, ever decides to have a wander.

I can only suggest making the litter tray as inviting as possible. Hay is a great thing to add to it as it makes doing their business more attractive. They can sit and have a munch and a poop at the same time!

Hippo INSISTS that he will be eating hay and pooping at the same time. Therefore the hay has to be in the litterbox or else his "loo" becomes wherever the hay is. Rolling Eyes I have had to resort to a litter box with very high sides. This way Hippo can't sit on the outside of the box, eat the hay in the box, and poop on the outside of the box Rolling Eyes

I do have to brag that Brynn has impeccable litter habits Very Happy

Hay in the litter box and picking up their poops and putting them in the litterbox a million times a day are two suggestions I can give.

My buns are all outside buns and all of them have a litter tray in the sleeping area of their hutch (which none of them use to sleep in!) It is a kind of en-suite toilet area. I put in newspaper then a pile of hay which they eat too.

Gloria and Wolfie have two litter trays side by side and tend to eat ALL the hay in one box, whilst still pooing in it too, and then move onto the other tray, eating and pooing. But the second tray is always fuller the next day. Felix is the same, but he doesn't eat any hay, just poos in the tray.

Beside doing their poos in their trays, they also have decided upon a corner in their compounds where they do their poos and wees once they are out of their hutch. Apart from that, they do nothing anywhere else. They have hay in all areas of their hutches, but don't do poos in the sitting area, only the toilet zone.

I don't know if it is different for outdoor buns from indoor ones.

I did it by watching him, and when he's finished pooping outside the box, I'd say 'Noooo' in my stern voice (yes, I have one!) and gently press his nose to the floor. (good trick, I found, for anything you don't want them to do, this forces the bun into a submissive state, with the Noooo, and they learn the 'No' command). Then I'd pick up the poop, and take it to the box, and put it there, and show him it.

In the wild, buns tend to poop in the same place, so once he knew where that place was, he started going. I have to say it's not been competely successful, he has an area around each tray that he clearly wants to mark as his, and as he's been neutered, pooping is the only way, but he does just keep it to that area, which is easy to clean up.

Certain things work on certain buns, so give it a go and he may respond, or not... albino

I already put hay inside the box, and the hay rack is just above it, but they insist in pooping everywhere!
I'll try to pick up the poops more often, although it's hard since they are outdoors and the place is so big!
I'm definitly going to use that "press nose on the floor" thing, because sometimes my bunnies forget who's boss!
thanks alot or the tips! Thumbs Up

I did it pretty much the same way as jay. Daisy was first convinced that he was supposed to be pooing on the front room sofa. We tried everything including (and this is no joke) covering it in plastic and putting a fence round it!!!!!

In the end we left the plastic on and put the tray on the sofa and said "no" eveytime he missed it and showed him as we put the poo into the tray. Eventually we were able to move the tray off the sofa and into the corner.

I have to say that he is totally brilliant now and uses a cat litter tray with a lid and a door so that it cant be seen.

Oh my god it was hard work though!!!!!
