Fright of my life last night
We've been chatting about the myxo thing a bit, and Paul is really worried about the bear. He was having cuddles last night with Paul, when he (paul) says "There's a lump on his skin behind his head...". you know when all the blood drains away from your head - both of us went into mild panic. If it'd been any other time, I wouldn't have thought about it, and presumed it was a wart or similar. I got down and had a feel, and knew instantly what it was - a big plump mother of a Tick It musy have been feeding for a while, cos it was mahoosive. I don't have a tick puller out thig, so I rang anne, and she was over in two minutes with one, and we had it out in a couple of mins. Paul got quite upset, he didn't know what it was and it freaked him out that it could have been a nodule.
Stewie's now got quite a lump there, is this anything to worry about? I'm taking him for his myxi booster 3 weeks early, on Thursday, so will get the vet to have a look, but should I put sudocrem on it (or anyhting else) or leave it be?

Re: Fright of my life last night
I found this "Sometimes ticks attach themselves to rabbits and feed on their blood for several days. Once fully engorged, the ticks will drop off naturally, but they cannot be pulled off whole while still alive. The head remains firmly embedded in position. They can be killed by cutting off their air supply for about thirty minutes with a smear of vaseline, fat or butter. Afterwards it is possible to pull them away cleanly using a pair of tweezers." Doesn't say anything about further treatment. The lump will go down in time. I remember when Charlie used to come home with them.

Thanks Lorna, I rang Anne because I knew she had a tick remover. We used to do it the old fashioned way on the farm, and I didn't want to do that, the head usually stays attached..yukkies

I think sudocrem will just soothe it. Poor Stewie. I hate it when you get a fright like that.
Re: Fright of my life last night
I hate ticks, I took one of a little wild hedgehog not long ago. I took great delight in stabbing the ghastly thing.

I didnt think ANY tick could be pulled off even with a tool, you need to buy a solution that makes them detach the head from the skin, this was what I was told while back when my friends cat had a few tics, my dogs have NEVER had them so really never crossed this. I keep an eye on the cats and the rabbit, (cats treated with front line) bunny not tho. which I am getting multi advice totally telling me the opposite so dont know what is best to follow.

Re: Fright of my life last night
Tick removers are worth having in as they are nasty little so and so's are ticks. My BIL had one on his leg and had to go to the Medical day centre to have it removed and now he has infection in his leg, it's really quite bad.
You can't pull them off that's the problem, a tick remover you can usually buy from pet shops and they dislodge the head easily and the tick can be removed then. If the mouth part is left in it can cause infection.
They remind me of fat coffee beans .

Ticks can be in the grass and latch on to bunnies or anything that they can feast on.

Re: Fright of my life last night
My MIL wee dog gets ticks, she doesnt treat them with strong flea/tick treatment, I use front line spray on their coat once everyt 3 months (thats what says on bottle) just to keep the hitch hikers at bay, as well as programme for the ones that do get on them. Charlie doesnt have access to grass, but next time I am in the pet store will grab one of the tick picks.

Re: Fright of my life last night
Oh gosh I only know that feeling too well!
We had one on our dog the other day and didn't have a tick remover so we used tweezers. Must be very careful not to leave the head in though so we checked it with a magnifying glass once we got it out.
People should definitely be aware of tics! Especially how they can and will latch on to rabbits and even if they live inside.
Hope Stewie isn't feeling it too much
