A slightly late 'hello' from the Netherlands Empty A slightly late 'hello' from the Netherlands

Post by jalith3 Sun Nov 06, 2011 12:19 am

I thought it about time I write and introduce myself, as nice forum members have been helping me over the last couple of weeks or so.
We are an expat family living in a tall house near The Hague in the west of the Netherlands. My husband and I are originally from the UK (I'm from Cornwall) but we've lived around the globe with our three children.
At present we have three small furry creatures that share our living space - Norman (a wild coloured and once-upon-a-time very wild rabbit) and Wilhelmina (a tricoloured lop with one eye!) Both acquired from our local animal ambulance over the last few years.
The third I brought home more recently in a cardboard box from a local garden centre/pet shop. He is very much the result of a 'weak moment'. (I had been going to the shop for many many months and saw this one small rabbit in the same small glass cage. The assistant told me he was going to be sent back to the breeder shortly because no one wanted to buy him but could not confirm his fate...Enough said. He's a lucky lad!
Norman and Wilhelmina are well bonded and I am desperately trying to establish a happy three way bond with the youngster but having real problems.

The Netherlands lags behind the UK/US in its attitude to keeping pet rabbits. The more enlightened and current way of thinking that these creatures need somewhat more than a box at the bottom of the garden is gradually taking off here but it is slow. Attitudes take so long to change.
I try and spread the message in a small way but get frustrated by the language issue. If you are passionate about something then you need to use subtle language to convey your passion. Unfortunately my Dutch is just not subtle enough for the job!
I know only one other family locally that have real 'house rabbits' and maybe through the HH I might meet more......Here's hoping?!?!!
Really good to meet you all
Sarah

NB.Might put in a Part2 at a later date

Sort of welcome to HH, Sarah! Laughing Laughing :waves:

There are quite a lot of house rabbits on this forum, and lots of outdoor ones too so lots of different experiences, but all want the very best for their buns so you will be in excellent company.

Sorry Nickie and others
There was no intention whatsoever at claiming that keeping rabbits as house pets is the only way to go. I appreciate that many others on the forum house theirs outside and still love their buns very much. It is just the only way that it can work for us for various reasons.
It's the abandoned pet at the bottom of the garden (usually bought for children initially) that irks me which regretably is seen very often here!
Thanks so much for your welcome(s).
Sarah

Sweetheart I didn't think you were saying that. I merely meant that we have lots of people doing both so however you keep your buns there is lots of experience to rely on

Sorry to have upset you. xx

Hey welcome to the forum!

I've not been about for a few weeks so I'm catching up, but I'm normally a regular Thumbs Up

I hope you get the bond going well in the end.
