Vaccinations??
I know I may be shot down for this but... my bunnies arent vaccinted They are all nuetered of course, but iv never vaccinated any of them.
I am going to though, but just wanted some advice.
My vets do vaccinations for myxi and a seperate one for HVD.
Do they need them every year, like dogs? do they have to be done seperately or can the both vaccinations be given at the same time??
Thanks for any help

Re: Vaccinations??
It's a personal choice Kate, we do try not to shoot people down on here
The Myxo vaccination is every 6 months, as recommended by the manufacturers and the BVA. Some vets haven't yet cottoned on to this, and will say 'annually, except in high risk areas, where it should be every 6 months.'
As nearly everywhere is high risk, the manufacturers changed their recommendation a couple of years ago.
VHD is once a year, and to avoid any potential nasty side effects from Cylap, like lumps or limps, the best vacc is 'Anivac' , which is suspended in an aqueous solution, rather than the mineral oil one that Cylap & Lapinject are in - althoug Lapinject doesn't seem to have the same probs.
You can read all about that here http://www.hoppingmad.org/E2/news.htm (scroll down)
The vaccs need to given 2 weeks apart

Re: Vaccinations??
This year has been particularly bad for myxi so it would be a good idea to get your buns done, but it has to be up to you.

Hello Jay,
My bunny Nighthawk is getting VHD vacc on Wednesday. I don't know which vacc he's receiving as I thought they would all be safe but my friend suggested I come on here and get some advice.
Do I have to phone the vet to find out which vacc he will be receiving and would they be likely to change it if I wasn't 100% confident that he'll be safe?
Any help is appreciated!

Re: Vaccinations??
If you phone the vets and ask thet should be able to tell you what they use. The 2 good ones are Lapinject and Anivac. The one that causes all the side effects is called Cylap. It was the only one to be offered for years and some vets have been slow to move away from it. If your vet is still using Cylap you are perfectly entitled to ask for them to order one of the others but it may put the date of vaccination back by a week or two. Not all buns react to Cylap - one of mine has had it every year for 7 years but this year was the first time he reacted to it. However the companies own stated reaction rate is 50% of buns will react. Keep up posted with how you get on.

Re: Vaccinations??
Thanks deary, I'll ring them tomorrow and keep posted of which they're using and whether I'll ask for a swap.
I wouldn't mind, but I think Nighthawk's a bit of a wimp bless him!

Re: Vaccinations??
how odd! Prob my vet trying to get more money out of me!!
I took Buttons to them to get his nails clipped (still not confident doing it myself!) and they charged me £10!!! It was the nurse that did it too not even the vet!! so I shall have to be getting confident at doing it for next time because no way am i paying that much again!!
