Spay after care
Temperance is going to the vet today for an overnight stay at the vets before being spayed tomorrow.
When she was in last week having her nails trimmed and being weighed the veterinary nurse told us that they do not use stitches but glue the wound. Anyone any experience of this?
I know her movements need to be restricted and she can't come out to play, how long does she need to be confined to her pen for?
Her pen is 6' x 3', is this ok or should I make it smaller?
She periscopes a lot when she is in her pen, is this going to be a problem? She also rattles the bars, up turns her water dish and generally causes havoc when she wants out, is this going to be a problem?
Am I right in thinking not to put hay in her litterbox?
I'm a bit worried, last night it was like she knew! She always wants stroked but last night she was much more of a sook than usual. When I was on the sofa she sat right next to me for ages with her little nose up in the air being stroked, when I was on the floor she kept putting her front paws up on me- she NEVER does this unless you've just come from the kitchen and she thinks you have food.

Re: Spay after care
when i had my girls done, they used stitches,it didnt take long for spike to be up to her usual naughty self,i would just keep an eye on her, every bun is different,i did let mine out after a day as there pen was really small and for the first day they hardly moved, just slept alot, snowflake hardly came out,she just wanted to sleep but as soon as spike started been naughty, jumping up in the window,i put her back in the pen,tbh i wouldnt put hay anywere in the cage as it might scratch the wound,i just used litter everywere,i would get some of her fav' treats and get some parsley or other herbs she loves,to encourage her to eat, after 5 days i put them back in there hutch outside and it was a few more weeks before i let them on the grass

Re: Spay after care
After Florence was done, for about a day she would only eat if I handed it to her. So be prepared for that. She also wouldn't drink, so I had a supply of cucumber for her to get fluid in. That helped with wees!!
I'm not sure if she had stitches or glue, but she didn't have to go and get anything removed. The vet told me one of the main things was not to let her jump about, she got very bored! I think if it hurts her to stand up she won't do it. Florence refused her medicine after a few days, tut tut tut.
I only had newspaper in the bottom of her cage, plus a towel. She won't eat hay from a hay rack so I did have that on the floor, but under strict instruction that it was only allowed in the corner so she wasn't tempted to lay on it!
I'm sure she'll be fine, but it is a worry. I hated it!

Re: Spay after care
Sounds like you have a good vet practice there. Most buns are usually discharged home and you need to get them to eat yourself. it is good that they are not letting her home until she is ready.
My does have always had glue rather than stitches. I think it depends on the vet.

Re: Spay after care
Sorry ive only just seen this.
Wow sounds like you have a really good vet!
Mine fed her some bits and bobs that I packed in a lunch box for her before she went in but discharged her a few hours after the op without any mention of poos. I kept her in a large cage in my room for about 7 days, she couldn't do any running about yet had space to move and couldn't do any extreme periscoping.
I kept her on a bed of blankets and only put a small amount of hay in the corner for her to eat because I didn't want it to trouble her wound.
She didn't eat, pee or poo until early hours the next morning so hopefully it wont take too long for little one to get back to normal. It took Tigger two days before I saw that cheeky spark back in her eyes and after that she got quite fed up but I kept her in until the week was up because I know just how mad she can be.
I also made sure she had a bottle and a bowl to drink from.

Re: Spay after care
She's home!
The vet said that she wasn't pooing as much as they'd like but as she is a house bun we could take her home and to call in the morning and take her in if she's not pood much overnight.
The nurse showed me how to syringe feed her and I have Critical Care for syringe feeding her and also Baytril, Metacam and Zantac to give her.
She is super groggy but she took 2 little bits of carrot, had a drink and seems relieved to be home.

Re: Spay after care
Really good news that she has come through and is eating. The fact that she has taken food and is drinking is really brilliant. A lot of buns dont eat at all the same day so that really is good news.
Please give her a gentle nose rubs from me.
you must be very relieved!

Re: Spay after care
It sounds like she is doing really well. It's a shame it's such a big op for them but it has to be done
It's great that she's eating, drinking and has done even a small amount of poo.
Hopefully you will wake to lots of bunny poo in the morning

6 little bunny 'presents' so far
I was told to mix the Baytril with ribena, but I don't have any. Can I mix it with pineapple juice?

Re: Spay after care
She took her medicine no bother but she hates the critical care
Also she struggles like anything when I try to wrap her to pick her up, managed to wrap her enough that she stayed still but had to keep her on the floor. This made trying to give her the critical care even harder, she spat most of it out so got hardly any. She has done some more poos though so thats good and she ate a little bit of barley ring and a bit of dried plantain.
I've put the heating on for her and given her a hot water bottle with some warm (not hot) water in it (we don't have a microwave hence no snuggle safe).

Re: Spay after care
Sometimes I found when Tigger wouldn't take it from a syringe she would take it from a spoon.

Re: Spay after care
If she eats on her own I wouldn't bother with the critical care. I also would also try syringe feeding without the wrap. Bruce always objects to the first mouthful then accepts the rest willingly. Sometimes I think wrapping just winds them up more. I would have to wrap Flo though.

Re: Spay after care
I would only syringe feed if she won't eat by herself. The vets did well getting some food into her system so she had food in her tummy, but if you hassle her too much, you might make her go on eating strike.
My buns were slow to eat the first day or so, but I tempted her with her favourite foods and just 'annoyed' her by rubbing herbs in her face until she snapped and ate them. As long as she is eating something and drinking and producing poos and wees, she will be fine.

Re: Spay after care
I agree with what the others have said - if she is eating on her own then I would stop the critical care as it could stress her out more and then she could stop eating because of it.
She sounds like she is doing really well on her own hun x x

Re: Spay after care
I left the critical care in i made up in a little bowl in her pen overnight, it remains untouched... its pretty stinky I don't think I would eat it either!
She also had some pellets, dried leaves, barley rings, a few little bits of carrot and a few basil leaves. She has eaten some of the dried leaves and a carrot top. I tried tempting her with some stuff by hand but the only thing she'd take is carrot, so i have given her a small carrot which she's eaten about half of.
She has pood a bit more but not much but relative to how much/little she's eaten it probably normal.
Just tried to give her the second lot of drugs, managed to give her the metacam but then she ran off. Was extremely difficult to restrain her but the best way seemed to be between me and the cage bars, she still struggled but it was easier to keep her still ish. Managed to give her the zantac but only half of the baytril before she struggled too much and I had to let her go

Re: Spay after care
If she is eating and pooing I think she is doing okay hunni.
The Baytril tastes horrid to buns, we always have a nightmare getting it into the boy. The metacam is tasty though and you might find she will lick it off the syringe or some yummy herbs.
she is going to take a little while to get completely back to normal but she deffo sounds like she is getting there which is brilliant.

Re: Spay after care
I've mixed the baytril with pineapple juice (the vet said ribena but I don't have ribena) so hopefully its not too awful. I managed to get the second half into her while she was in her litter tray.
The vet said to take her back in if she wasn't pooing normally, although theres not lots of them they look normal and she's not eaten much. She is sitting in her litter try atm shredding newspaper which is one of her favourite hobbies.
