Re: Litter mates U/D Random!
I think you are naturally mistrustful of this change of heart from your hubby. Have the conversation with hubby. Talk to the centre. Find out about Dave's wife. If you want both it is probably vital for the rebond that they come to you at the same time. So maybe you pay for the rescue's vets to neuter him whilst waiting for the mrs to become available. Maybe you ask them to do both buns. Maybe you then change your mind - but you will have done Mr and Mrs Dave a great kindness. I am just saying there are things you can do to buy yourself time and help you help Dave.

Re: Litter mates U/D Random!
Taking them home at the same time was something I had thought about too Neutral territory for them both
How many weeks would they need to stay separated for after he was neutered? I know it doesn't take effect straight away in human males (not that neutering is the right term there! ) so I'm guessing it would be the same for buns?
Thanks

4-6 I think. But if Mrs is done to it is less of an issue. That is why I am suggesting you start talking to the rescue now. From what you have said the babies must be old enough to do without mum.

Re: Litter mates U/D Random!
The RWAF leaflet advises that male rabbits can be fertile for up to 4 weeks after neutering. But if she is spayed too, there is no reason they could not go back together as soon as they have healed, as there is no risk of a pregnancy (although they may still be a bit hormonal).

Re: Litter mates U/D Random!
Thank you
I agree that getting the wife spayed right away would be the nest option but she has just had babies so I'm not sure how soon she could be spayed

Thumper2001 wrote:If you have two baby bunny litter mates and you neuter them in time, before hormones take over, do they ALWAYS get on?
Or would their relationship be just like any other 2 bunnies who aren't from the same litter?
I realise that if you got a boy and a girl, they would need to be separated before they are ready for neutering in case of babies, but what about 2 girls?
I know two boys ain't a smart idea.
My friends buns; Holly and Fern were both from the same litter. They lived together until they began humping eachother and chasing oneanother. She had them spayed at the same time and theve been fine every since.

Re: Litter mates U/D Random!
The chat with OH last night did not go well at all After him phoning and saying that to me yesterday and agreeing to talk about it last night, he was more interested in watching the football
What I did manage to get out of him was that he thought Dave and the wife were going to be living outside. I was livid!!! Where he got that from I have no idea So I basically went to bed upset. Again.
All this has led me to realise that Thumper dying is still too raw and I'm just pushing all my grief on to getting more buns so I don't have to deal with it. I'm just not ready to let her go yet
I'm going to have to risk leaving Dave at the centre and someone else rehoming him. The babies aren't going to be ready for another 3 weeks so I will see how I feel then. Who knows, maybe Dave will still be there too.
I know this sounds dramatic, but I can't do this to myself any more. I'm a complete mess. I need to learn to accept that my bubba isn't coming back.
Thank you all for your patience throughout my dithering. I don't know what I'd do without you guys

Re: Litter mates U/D Random!
Well at least you can console yourself that you have made a decision, for now. Try and stick to it, and don't put yourself throuogh this - as you clearly don't think this is for the right reasons.
Animals, as you know, are sensitive, and Dave et al may not want to come to a home where there is an unwelcoming atmosphere, and you run the risk of thinking 'What have I done?' whic in turn could even result in you rejecting any new buns, albeit emotionally, not physically.
I think you were right to broach the subject, and right to find out how you really feel about it - and right to delay.
If and when the time is right, then it's right. Don't pressure yourself
Apologies if I got caught up in the love of Dave - I wouldn't have suggested for a minute that you bring him mome if you aren't ready.
I only had Bertie for 3.5 years, It felt like a lifetime, I can't imagine how much bigger that emptiness would have been if he'd been with us a decade

Re: Litter mates U/D Random!
I think you have made the right decision for now. You obviously have a llot of things to come to terms with before you consider another bun.
I don't think you will ever 'let go' of Thumper, but be more accepting/at peace with her loss. x

Re: Litter mates U/D Random!
Thanks guys. We'll see how long this "decision" lasts
I thought I was doing quite well. I had a few not too bad weeks where I actually thought I was beginning to accept it, but it all came crashing down over the weekend. I really shouldn't have left it all these weeks to clean out her bedroom. I was just burying my head in the sand and doing it hurt like hell
Jay, you have nothing to apologise for. I was caught up in the Dave magic for a while there so I'm sure I led you all to believe I was at least semi ready! And you are right, the void she has left is huge. It's something I'm going to have to carry around forever. I'm sure the void is huge for you too, even if you did have Bertie less time
JoeyBunsMum, that's a better way to put it, because I don't want to "let her go" so to speak
Thank you all. I'm sure I'll be back here dithering about it again soon
