Neutering and vets - U/D Saturday
I am a little worried. The only place I can find who neuter bunnies (male only - no spaying ) seem a little odd.
I have booked Dom in for tomorrow morning but am a little worried. First thing she said to me was "no food or water after 6pm". I tried to explain that rabbits can't vomit so don't need starving and she said "but is better". I will not be starving my rabbits.
I asked if they gave pain medication to the animals post-op, "if you want" was the answer. Yes I very much do want!
I mentioned antibiotics too and she was being all "yes mam" I think just wanting to get me off the phone.
I have no doubt they will do the op but am a bit worried about aftercare and that they might kill Domino on the table. I have had no luck from the volunteer vet at the shelter but am counting on him to do Hazel as there are only 2 vets in this country - neither do females, one doesnt even do bunnies.
Can you please give me any advice on home-made remedies, painkillers, ANTHING I can do to get in stock tomorrow for Dom. I will do my best to hunt down metacam but please I am a little frantic here

Good luck with it all!! Have you found ot what type of GA they will be using??
I can't think of any specific meds, but something with the same active ingredient as Infacol might help for tummy probs?? Do you have syringes for syringe feeding??

Oh blimey
Has the Vet actually done a Rabbit Castrate before ?
Can you call them again and ask what GA drugs they use and what analgesia they are likely to prescribe for after the op'
Then post the drug names on here.

Re: Neutering and vets - U/D Saturday
right. i overcame my dread of phoning people and finally managed to hunt down the head of the animal rescue operation out here who has set me an appointment with a vet on friday. I shall be compiling a list of questions but he sounds much more hopeful, charges a bit more (always good) and will do females too.
Current questions I have are:
any more answers on a postcard please.
Current questions I have are:
- what anaesthesia do you use?
- what pain relief is given after the op?
- do you recommend fasting the animal beforehand?
- how many of these ops have you done on rabbits/how many patients have you lost to this op?
- what sort of aftercare do you provide? checkup appts etc?
any more answers on a postcard please.
Re: Neutering and vets - U/D Saturday
Do you administer a gut stimulant ( Metoclopromide ) after the GA/Op ?
This really helps get the gut going again
Where will the Rabbit be housed whilst in your care ? ( preferably out of sight/smell of predators such as cats and dogs )
During the GA is Bun on a heat pad (Essential)
Is a heat pad/lamp provided whilst Bun is recovering from the GA. (Essential !!)
If I think of anything else I'll post again

That sounds more promising!!! I would rather pay more and know it's going to be done properly.

Oh the price is not an issue - it was that she'd not got back to me after a fortnight of me emailing her to get this vet's number.
the others were the only ones I could find. I just didn't trust them - no warm fuzzies exuded from that place I can tell you.

yup I'd be worried too. I hope it all goes OK Helen, will be thinking about you both tomorrow x
Re: Neutering and vets - U/D Saturday
For any potential tummy problems, I'd have some peppermint tea handy.
Really hope all goes well.

Re: Neutering and vets - U/D Saturday
Sending loads of vibes, that first vet sounded more like a butcher from what you said
Re: Neutering and vets - U/D Saturday
Right they are in. No heat mats but they use hot water bottles (better than nothing). it took a while but they seem to use metacloprimide.
They are going under in approximately 2 hours (Stu, Dom and Hazel) meanwhile Bob is all alone and wondering where the hell everybody went!
Please can we have lots of vibes for my 3 - I am more than a little nervous...

Re: Neutering and vets - U/D Saturday
Ok I have rung the vet. He says they are awake (and alive which was my main criterion) but have not fully recovered yet and are not eating. I had to basically force him to promise to offer them food when they came around so I'm hoping that he's remembered. Maybe he will have by now anyway.
He says I can go and pick them up at 6 (11 your time, 40 minutes away). I am hesitant to breathe a sigh of relief but it would seem the worst is over.
Bob is very lonely bless him. Nerie (our amah) and I have been making a special fuss of him and he has had some dried banana as a treat but he is sat by the wall, buddha'd up wondering what the hell happened to all his mates!
The vibes seem to be wroking guys, keep em coming please

Re: Neutering and vets - U/D Saturday
How come Bob didn't go in? Is he missing his 'bits' still?
Relieved to here the others are alive, hope they start to eat pretty sharpish. Did you sort out some painrelief?
