Elijah ... Erin BOTH home...

Thanks. She was re-admitted at 11.00 pm with a blood glucose reading of over 18 The vet didn't feel she had a blockage but was going to x-ray her to be vigilant as 18 is in the 'scary range' for a glucose reading. They will phone me at any hour if there is anything of note going on.

Oh dear that is a very high blood glucose reading , Rosie's was 19 when we rushed her to the vet's last December and she had a blockage and they had to operate on her straight away, at least Erin is in the best place and they can monitor her.

It's such a worry isn't it,

Neither Erin or Elijah are eating on their own today and are being medicated and syringe fed. The message didn't suggest any particular concern about either of them, they are just getting them through this stasis episode.

Thanks but unless something in particular is going on, I only get one message a day at about 11.00 am, so no news now for another 13 hours. As they weren't eating this morning I think it's highly unlikely they've be coming home tomorrow even as they will want them eating really well before they come home - especially as Erin has already been home then stopped eating only a few hours afterwards. It's hard with them away but I'm so flippin useless I couldn't even get Erin to take Metacam, so they are better off where they are. I think I'm really going to have to force myself to get into doing the blood glucose testing now too, given her circumstances. I saw two vets do it on two bunnies this week and it looked so easy.....

Taking the blood glucose is quite easy once you have done it a few times, we do our buns when they are ill as it tells you so much more
if you ask your vet she may show you our's did

She showed me when it was very much at the research stage ... and then again a few months later... and again.... She's very understanding that I haven't been able to do it... even knows that I advise people on internet forums which kits to buy - but still haven't managed to do it for myself The thing is though, it's supposed to be so I can decide whether or not they need to see a vet straight away, or whether it can wait. I don't believe I've ever actually got it wrong as all the out of hours ones at silly o'clock that I've taken to the vets have been 15+ (Except Esme once who was hyperventilating, so that was still needed even though she was only a 12).

I am going to ask to be shown again, maybe given the chance to do it under supervision if there's time because I want to be more hands on.

I really hope they pick up soon. You must be out of your mind with worry

They are now home and settling well. Erin took a while to come out from her hidey hole but that's understandable.

In the last 20 minutes Esme has started with the looking uncomfortable and refusing food I'm going to keep an eye on her for a while. She's not been given anything except hay in the last 8 hours. I cleaned their trays out at about 3 or 4 pm and there is a huge pile of poops in her tray, so I'm hoping she just has a little gas that needs to move.

Edit to add: Esme's just eaten some grass.... and a dandelion leaf. Thank god!
