Re: Taffy has EC - U/D 29/03 - he's gone
Humum has just been out to get some noms to tempt Taffy with. When she got back she heard a lot of clattering from upstairs so she rushed up and caught Taffy.....
... eating pellets
Not for very long, but he is showing an interest at last and he ate a bit of dill that she offered him. She has banananana baby food, apple baby food and pear baby food to offer him in a little while too. He is sitting up a bit better, ears up and looking quite alert.
Her biggest concern at the moment is that his back end is absolutely soaked (and stinky) despite him being on vet bed. She's going to clean his pen in a little while and see if she can at least towel him dry a little it. His poor tail is saturated
Maysie - the little pouches of Ella's Kitchen baby foods are on half price in Tesco, 34p each, and have a year shelf life on

He's now steaming through a small pile of herbs. It seems that now he has the idea of eating again he can't get enough

I really think you will see an improvement as the day's go on , glad he is eating his pellets that's great news
Have you any Micro Fibre Towels they are good for getting them dry quickly and they wash and dry so quick. You can get tea towels and all sort's in them now and they are worth having in just to dab bunnies dry when they are wet.
Thank's for that about 'Ellas Kitchen' baby food we are going to go and get some and stock up as they are brilliant and always great to have in ...Thanks Sparky

Re: Taffy has EC - U/D 29/03 - he's gone
The saturation issue is why many people use nappies during these problems. You cut out a small hole for the tail. I am wondering if the on the wonk forum might be a good place to ask about ideas to keep Taffy dry. Do you have any sort of absorbent material under the vet bed. Also is it basic vet bed or the rubber backed stuff? It needs to be the basic green backed stuff really. I got my last lot from Bronte Glen via Amazon (but they also have their own website) and it drains perfectly and it is a good price for larger amounts too.
But good news on the nomming front.

Fab news that he's eating!!
Sparky, if your humum wants to get more pellets down Taffy she could try mushing them up with some water, he maybe just can't be bothered chewing them. I'm sure she's thought of that already though

I'll get her onto On The Wonk. She's been reading so much on t'internet that she's been scaring herself a bit. But it seems maybe he ought to have Metacam, and that's probably the best place to advise...cheryl'n'bruce'flo wrote:The saturation issue is why many people use nappies during these problems. He has tarpaulin (to protect the carpet), a fleecey blanket then vetbed on top. One corner has a pile of megazorb with hay on top. The top of the vet bed is staying dry as it should. It's just that because of the way he sits or half-lays, the widdle has to run down him before it even reaches the vet bed. We have a lot of the green backed stuff and some vet bed gold.
He has a bowl of pellets, a bowl of veg, a bowl of moistened pellets, a bowl of dried herbs and leaves and things, a pile of three different types of hay and a pile of readigrass. I reckon the main problem is that he doesn't know where to startThumper2001 wrote:Fab news that he's eating!!

Re: Taffy has EC - U/D 29/03 - he's gone
Thanks all. He seems a bit brighter tonight than he was last night. He is quite keen on the bananana baby food and the apple one although he is only taking tiny amounts and his poos are just foul at the moment at least he is passing something.
If we can just keep getting enough nutrition in him to give him a fighting chance and give the meds a few days to work.
He has so little in reserve though that he's really walking (well, stumbling) a fine line

Re: Taffy has EC - U/D 29/03 - he's gone
I see you have had some responses on On the Wonk. Both Ros and Rami have some useful information I think.
I suspect that once you get Taffy on metacam his appetite may improve. Certainly with Bruce I find that it is pain that stops him eating. Ease his pain and he goes back to eating like a trooper.

Re: Taffy has EC - U/D 29/03 - he's gone
Thanks Cheryl - we've just checked OTW, and there is some useful information there (and some not so - I'm glad Ros pulled up the person who suggested Baytril as we agree that it's becoming almost useless in this country).
Humum will give the vets a call tomorrow. The duty vet has been made well aware of Taffy's case so hopefully she's also been told to listen to Humum - it would be nice to get him on it tomorrow, although he seems fairly comfortable (if Humum thought he wasn't, she would obviously have pursued it today). At least if he has it, we can be sure he's not in pain. Perhaps the anti-inflammatory side of it might help his mobility too.

Re: Taffy has EC - U/D 29/03 - he's gone
There is some good advice on OTW and some less so. You do need to be aware that it is a transatlantic forum so some advice - such as getting the specific E.C. tests - is less applicable to us. And not all the drugs have the same names or are not available in both countries. However, there are some really experienced owners with E.C. experience there and also a couple of vets that pop in and out who are also very knowledgeable. They are quite good at helping people to think around the issues really.

He has wolfed down two mini shredded wheat. Do you think it would be ok to give him as many as he wants considering the important thing is getting food into him and at least they are high fibre? We'll syringe him some water too as they are such dry food. Opinions please?

As long as Taffy is getting enough water as well if he is enjoying his mini shredded wheat I would let him have them

Re: Taffy has EC - U/D 29/03 - he's gone
He ate a bowlful of dried herby bits overnight and quite a lot of fresh herbs. He is choosing dill in particular - maybe he knows it is good for tums. Humum needs to go and try to get another nice fresh bunch for him today.
We have some slightly better formed poos
He fought his meds a bit
He's had a syringe of warm water and a couple of mouthfuls of banananana baby food and now he has a mini shredded wheat which he is trying to pretend he is not enjoying
He seems a bit drier around the back end. Humum hopes that means he is gaining toilet control rather than not getting enough water. He seems to be sitting more comfortably. Humum is about to phone the vet about the Metacam.
He's far from out of the woods, but he's fighting
