Flopsy is poorly. U/D ultrasound done
My poor Flopsy has been to the vets this evening to see JC. I was expecting he would be needing a dental however J said that his teeth are in quite good condition considering his last dental was in December (4 months ago) Flopsy has lost quite a bit of weight again and he's just skin and bones, he weighs 1.66kg , he was 1.8kg just 4 weeks ago so had lost about 200g. As well as this his incontinence is getting worse and a lot of the time his feet are wet with urine from where he'll sit in the run and wet hisself.
Flopsy last had bloods taken in December when he had his last dental and the results were that his kidney disease was stable however his liver enzyme levels were elavated so J advised me to put Flopsy on milk thistle extract which I give to him every day. We didn't know whether the liver damage was permanent or what exactly it was as J didn't want to opt for a biopsy in his condition then. It would be far too much for Flopsy.
As well as Flopsy's incontinence , his fecal output isn't the best. He produces tiny poos as well as good but recently the tiny ones have been increasing. I just put it down to all the meds/supplements he's on but I've looked online and this can be a symptom of quite serious liver issues.
All we can do is await the blood results , they will be back Wednesday night however J said he'll contact us on Thursday morning. I'm just hoping whatever the outcome , there's another drug we can put Flopsy on. I'm not ready to say goodbye to him but I do not want him to suffer either.
Does anyone have any experience with liver disease, failure or any other related liver disease etc?

I too have no experience with rabbit liver problems but I know how it feels to feel powerless when your beloved bunny is ill and you don't know what to do. Sending mega vibes and please know you are in my thoughts.

Re: Flopsy is poorly. U/D ultrasound done
Oh no Jack this is awful not Flopsy Bless him
Our Henry had renal failure he suddenly lost a lot of weight and we couldn't get the weight back on him at all and we took him to the vet's and he was actually in kidney failure she let us bring him home for the weekend and we had him booked in to be pts on the Monday. We brought him home as Sox his companion had a dental the same day we found out he was in kidney failure and we didn't want her coming round to him not there, sadly he died the same night cuddled up to Sox so I feel that was a better way to go
I know you will be so worried as I know just how much you love your bunnies and how well you look after them, I'm sure the blood test results will tell you more.
Sending Vibes for one of my Favourite little buns and Thinking of you xxx

Re: Flopsy is poorly. U/D ultrasound done
Flopsy's bloods came back this evening and my mum told me when I got in. Flopsy's kidney disease is stable and has been since he was diagnosed with CKD 11 months ago. However his liver is congested as his heart isn't pumping/functioning as it should be.
Flopsy is in for an ultrasound on Tuesday and we'll go from there. My poor boy .

I'm sorry to hear they his liver has been affected Jack.
I do know though, that John never gives up while a bun can enjoy a quality of life, and you are getting him the best possible care you can be.
Sending oodles of vibes your way x

Re: Flopsy is poorly. U/D ultrasound done
Thank you everyone for your thoughts and vibes
Flopsy had a bit of an 'off' day today , he's been very tired and he now has a runny eye so looks like he has a blocked tear duct. I'm hoping his eye will be better tomorrow. I'm very worried tonight and will be anxious tomorrow morning when I go out to see the bunnies. I'm not ready for him to leave , not now.
I'm hoping tomorrow will be a better day. I will upload the pictures of Flopsy and Lily that I took last week, they're very cute pictures.
Thanks everyone xx

Don't forget it has got a lot warmer quite quickly. A lot of ours are being very quiet in the heat.

Re: Flopsy is poorly. U/D ultrasound done
Hi everyone. Took Flopsy in for his ultrasound this evening after a busy day at college. I held Flopsy whilst he was shaved and had the gel put on him and also throughout the scanning - I wasn't too comfortable with the fact that I had to hold him in a way that caused him to almost trance. I guess that it's the most easiest and safe way of performing an ultrasound on a conscious rabbit. Anyway it was quite interesting to see the scan and be talked through everything.
Basically Flopsy's heart muscles are very thick so obviously his blood isn't being properly circulated around his body hence the congested liver J diagnosed him with heart disease and and has prescribed him with vetmedin tablets which I have to give him 1/2 once a day; they're liver flavour so not very nice! I'll make sure to grind them and mix them with some Ella's kitchen fruit purée baby food as I know he'll have it then.
We've got to go back next week and hopefully we will start to see some improvement. I am hoping that we should have some weight gain by next week.
I asked J what the prognosis was and he said that it's quality of life over quantity; which is very true. Hopefully once we can stabilise his condition that he can remain comfortable and pain free for many more weeks/months yet.
My poor boy. As if Kidney disease , arthritis and dental and tooth root issues wasn't enough already, that's heart disease and a congested liver added to the list.
Flopsy has been on Metacam for 2 years , Fortekor for almost a year and now he's on Vetmedin on top of that. He also has oxbow joint supplements and milk thistle extract.

Sounds like you & Flopsy had a trying day. At least there is a medicine that may help. Goodness knows the quality of life you share with your buns is top notch. You are an excellent Bunny Parent! Sending you both some vibes and a nose rub for Flopsy.
