Increased fluid intake!?! Advice please Empty Increased fluid intake!?! Advice please

Post by c.bolduan Wed Apr 16, 2014 8:41 pm

Hi folks,
Can you help???
It is regarding Bertie's fluid intake
He prefers to drink out of a bowl and usually gets one refilled every day.
They are Mason Cash bowls and if filled up take about 200 ml.
I fill his 3/4 and that eas right so far.
Since a few days he drinks far more. I'm sur it is not Bubbles as she only drinks from her water bottle.
I also have observed him and certainly he is drinking far more. Left a fresh bowl before I went to work. Now 8 hours later this is empty!! silent  Rolling Eyes
Swapped the boys over and the first thing he did is get to Coffes water bowl and drink. No
He seems ok otherwise. His poos look a bit smaller, he is eating and not displaying any change in behaviour. He is in a mould again after the first one had only finished 4 weeks ago.
I have booked with the vet for RAW week consultation on the 6.th of may.
Not sure what to do. study  No  Hmmm
Any ideas to recommendations are welcome. Thanks

Could be a uti if its recent so may be worth a vet visit.

Depends on the bun tho as i have one who drinks a full bowl and needs it re filled during the day but he always has done.

I was going to say it will be the warmer weather and the small poop's are due to him moulting but now I've read all the thread and he's bitten you and that's not like him then he sounds as if he is uncomfortable. He could have a touch of tummy ache. We were up all night on Tuesday with Linnet and then up all Wednesday night with Cleo, Mike took their bloods and they were both normal and gave them some Metacam and pineapple juice. They were both fine in the morning.

Hope everything is ok , sending him lots of 'Get Well' Vibes xxxxxxx

Just been up to serve breakfast and he seems a bit brighter and more himself. Still will arrange for him to be seen at VET as the warren smells strongly of urine and I had deep cleaned it only yesterday pm.
Will keep you updated and tanks for all the vibes he said!!

Here is the update.
Vet visit went well and Bertie was brilliantly behaved. Even started humming when Marieke checked him out which of course won her heart over straight away.
Good news he is still slowly loosing weight after the nuts experience with Howard and is close to his ideal weight now.
Teeth are fine and beautiful. His not mine.
She could not find anything wrong as such. No Fever, Heartsounds good and he was alert and cute enough. However the drinking and Urine smell suggest a UTI and she asked me to get a urine sample of him. What! Pardon! No  confused
To not use any litter in his tray and try to get some will be fun.
If not obtained by tomorrow we will start Baytril on him. What is the best way to give it. She suggest to use syringe and give it straight in his mouth. But I seem to remember that some buns don't like this. Sparky?
Also continue on the Metacam over the bank holiday and see what this does.
It was sweet when I took him in the carrier Bubbles looked at me to say, where are you taking him?
They usually go in the carrier together when transferred out in the run. She was good as gold when we came back and gave him a nice groom. Love Love Love
So proud of this lovely bun Very Happy Thumbs Up Very Happy and gave him a fenugreek crunchy all for himself!

I give baytril through a syringe. It's the only way I can make sure it's in him. I pop daisy on the kitchen side hold
him with one arm and syringe with the other.

I deffo think you should start with the baytril ASAP.

Glad he was so well behaved bless him x

I tend to draw up the baytril. Wipe the outside of the syringe clean (this is really inmportant) then draw up a mini amount of something sweet such as pineapple juice. This way you stand some chance of getting the syringe into Bertie's mouth. Baytril is horrible. It's like taking a mouthful of stomach bile.

I gather that.
He just had the first dose and was trusting enough thinking I have got a treat No Hissy Mad
His poor little face when the taste kicked in........
Gave beetroot crunchy straight after and his metacam but not sure how he will take it tomorrow. The idea with pineapple juice is smashing. Thanks for that. Poor boy i really felt sorry, he didn't like it not a single tiny bit. Hissy Hissy No No Suspect

Our lot will take it on a mini shredded wheat. Humum rummages through the box to find ones which will split in half easily, then splits them and puts drops of the baytril onto them. It's quite thick so it needs leaving a couple of minutes to soak in. She then offers them in bite-sized pieces while distracting the other bun with unmedicated morsels.

For Layla, she had to do this then wrap a basil leaf around the shredded wheat too. She thinks that would not have worked for many days as she was getting suspicious, but it worked for long enough.

I'm sorry to hear Bertie has been a bit off Sad

It sounds like my two need lessons from him in how to behave at the vets! Laughing

I do the Mini Shredded Wheat trick that Sparky described above, just watch him closely to make sure he's eaten it all Thumbs Up

Sending lots of vibes that it's just a UTI and he gets better soon Hugs
