Shortage of Vets Empty Shortage of Vets

Post by woodwench Tue Dec 12, 2017 10:20 am

In this area there is a shortage of vets. The practice I use had 3 vets at New Year, one left in March and they can't find a replacement, now Alex, Reboot's vet is leaving at the end of the month and no replacement for him either. Another practice in the town as given up on farm animal work due to not having enough vets.
Apparently they put it down to Brexit and European vets not wanting to come to England any more.
What's the situation in your part of the country?

No vets in coatbridge but town joined on has 3 that I know of prob more. We are about an hour and a half drive ( on a quiet traffic day) from edinburgh and 30 mins to glasgow ( nightmare to get to).

I find thundercrackers vet mike( only vet i will see in the practice now) was good but i find he is getting better the more he sees us, the bunny box so he doesnt sedate anymore for xrays. Medicine with jetfire he knew she wasnt eating because she felt nausea but he didnt have enough information on the medicine he wouldnt risk it and he refered her to edinburgh, he quizzed them about the anti sickness mefication so he knew for next time.

There is one vet i reguse to see and that because she put jetfires issues down to teeth and thinking back i took thundercracker because of bald spots and head shaking and she said it was stress, now my wee boy is getting treated for inflammation in his ears.

My bros friend is a small animal vet he had to move south to get a job

I’m sorry to hear your vet is leaving Sad

There are two practices in my town. My one and the other one. My one is expensive but good. The other is cheaper but I will not get involved with them because of their out of hours arrangements. Vets Now. I’ve been ripped off by them once and it won’t be happening again.

My practice has had a very quick turn over of staff the last few years but there are two who have been there for a very, very long time. They are joint owners of the business now. I only ever see these two. Apart from out of hours emergencies of course. Then I just have to see whoever is there.

I chose Black Sheep after talking to the owner and because they had a good rabbit vet at the time who knew and had trained/worked with Richard Saunders but she moved on about four months after I got Henry. Alex could be a first class rabbit vet if he chose to specialise in them, he is very dedicated and listens to the owner and includes us in every aspect of the treatment and he isn't scared or too proud to admit he is out of his depth and needs to consult someone with more experience/knowledge. now he is leaving I'm not sure what will happen. Richard, the owner is the only vet left at that practice. He knows his stuff but his true affinity is with dogs and cats... he doesn't have the feel for rabbits like Alex.
There are two other practices in the town. One is very much into larger animals esp. horses and there are several vets who flit between the town practice and three satellite surgeries .... that put me off because it meant there was never a certainty of seeing the preferred vet. The other practice is the one I left after the debacle with Lil Loll. I hate the woman vet who owns it, she is so arrogant and patronising and thinks she knows it all, she was very obstructive when I asked if we could consult Richard Saunders over Loll. She advised PTS and I had one helluva time with the *****.
Alex finishes on Friday so I'm going to have to hope for the best. I do know the owner, Richard, is open to outside help and cares but he's just not as relaxed with buns as I'd like.

We have two practices here in Liskeard too and the one we use, Luxstowe vets has opened another branch in Looe. I am not sure if there are any others in that area but Luxstowe seems to be doing really well as this is their third branch. I am definitely in the wrong business.

Still ne news of new vets at the practice I use. Richard, the owner vet is advertising in Australia and S. Africa (he is S. African himself) because of the national shortage of vets in UK and the reluctance of European vets to come to the UK after Brexit.
Alone, I can't see Richard carrying on for long. Already the vultures are circling in that another practice in the town has suddenly decided after over 40 years that they can no longer cope with farm animals even though they have a full compliment of 5 vets. They are going small animal only and that will no doubt attract clients from Richard when he is hard pressed to offer a full service (think what it must be like, all day and covering emergency calls every night too).
I cried after my last chat with Alex on Monday morning, I had formed a bond and a good understanding with him. I feel rather alone now,
