Bertie again, I'm afraid - u/d Heard from John
We've been treating Bertie for his compaction for 3 weeks now, and I'm not as sure now that we are cracking it, or if we are looking at something different now. I'm considering a couple of options, and I'd be grateful for any imput.
The compaction was a lot smaller this time, but we haven't seen, as we did last time, anything unusual coming out of him that would show the compaction is breaking up. He is routinely very well one day and then we have the morning stasis type incident every other day.
The stasis symptoms almost like clockwork disappear at midday-1pm and he starts eating again, and by 2 you'd never know anything was wrong, exactly the same as last time. This time though he's pooing in the morning, when he's not eating. The poos are fine, last time there was nothing until after he'd eaten.
My concern is that there is something else or that this is a different thing, but I can't explain why the the majority of symptoms are the same.
Before I go back to the vet, I'd like some advice with the options for happens next, as I can't let this carry on any more.
He could have a barium X-ray. This is bad news, I don't want it, but will if it's the only option.
I could take him to the bunny specialist in Andover, and would consider doing that before and X-ray if it was worth doing?
What other options would you consider?
Thanks

I would suggest a second opinion too, not because I wouldn't trust your vet but just incase another expert could throw some light on the problem, I would suggest the expert in Andover, I really hope that you get some answers Jay, I know how worried you both are and I also know how very frustrating it is to have these occurences and not know why, I'm afraid I can't be more help

Re: Bertie again, I'm afraid - u/d Back home & well
I agree that I think this is something you may have to start exploring other avenues with as it is likely that at least a couple of experts will have experiences of something similar but as I've found, you tend not to hear about these cases until you go out looking for them.
You could even suggest your vets try phoning a few exotics specialists further afield just to see if they have any ideas to try.
I can't remember if I have asked this before or not but is Bertie receiving Ranitidine or Cimetidine to protec against GI ulceration? It's just that if not this could be a contributory factor to his repeated anorexia.

Thanks guys, no Sooz, I've not heard that before, and din't know he could be having GI ulceration, I will ask, thank-you
I've just spent the morning with Anne, she knows John Chitty very well as the do a lot of talks together and work togetther, so I'm going to get an appointment to see him next week. I hope he can find out whats up, we're both feeling really unhappy about him being unwell for so long, we need to get him fixed, thisjust isn't fair on him.
Thank again x

Re: Bertie again, I'm afraid - u/d Back home & well
its a tough one, i dont have any advice and i know your specialist is obviously a different one to the one i saw...but, Peanuts specialist helped him hugely. and it wasnt that our normal vets werent good, theyre great but i think a specialist can help wonders if the problem cant be sorted by your normal vets.
I hope Bertie will feel better soon!

Re: Bertie again, I'm afraid - u/d Back home & well
I think you need to see the specialist, even just for your own peace of mind. If you had a problem that was very specialised or unusual, the best person to see would be a consultant in whatever discipline the problem came from. I am sure the same is true with animals. I hope you get to the root of the problem with Bertie's digestion and both of you get some peace of mind.

Re: Bertie again, I'm afraid - u/d Back home & well
Thanks guys After a worried call to nurse Theo last night, after Berts haden't voluntarily eaten all day, I stayed in the lounge all night with him and fed him every hour. He didn't like me much
This morning he has pooed at least and I've been feeding him, he seems perkier but still a bit off his food. I've seen this before and I hoping he should be over the worst by the end of the day. We were all due to go to London tonight, and a friend was going to sit Bertie, but that looks like it may not happen for us all.
I was meant to see Erin today, but I had to cancel, I'm sorry

Re: Bertie again, I'm afraid - u/d Back home & well
I know how bloody traumatic it can be too look after a bunny that acts like this, I only had Caspian for 8 weeks but he was in and out of stasis the entire time and it was so wearing as they just need your constant care and you darn't leave them for long.
I hope John Chitty can shead some light on things for you.

Thanks Sooz, it is very wearing, but he's seeing John tomorrow at 5.40, so I hope we get to the bottom of it
