Eye problem. Empty Eye problem.

Post by kobikiki Wed Aug 31, 2011 7:29 pm

I'm a bit confused and worried about cookie, when shes dozing she seems to keep her right eye open or half closed, when she fully closes the left one. The right eye also seems to be wider open than the left eye too in general. When I got her, both eyes seemed even and always closed both eyes to sleep. I can try to take a picture to show what I mean, but it's seems like it's too sore to close or something. The vets have thought nothing of it, but it just seems strange to me!

Hope someone can reassure me!

Thanks x

That's odd that the vet thinks nothing of
It! Maybe try and see another vet for a second opinion?! Sorry I have mo othe advice to offer really, it sounds very odd! Hope she gets better soon X

I thought that some buns doze off only closing one eye and the other partially?

Yes I think I will, it might be because she makes them look normal when she goes to vets! I'm looking at her now and the rig eye looks okay, it's kind of half open, but other times she'll just have it completely open and the other completely shut! X

I did think that too dotdot, but even when she's not asleep the right one will be wider. I'm trying to get a pic but she keeps hopping away!

Has the vet actually taken a look in the eye to check for cateracts etc? Or does she just have a lazy eye?

I think that if you are not happy with it hun you should pop her back to the vet. you know your bun best.

Does the eye look like it is bulging at all?

Aww, she's camera shy. Or just being awkward Laughing

If it's like it when she is awake maybe you should take her back? As Katie said, you know your bun best.

When I first noticed it looked like it was bulging, and then after a while I noticed she had some hay sticking out of it, this was a while ago, so I wiped it off and then she closed her eye for ages as if to say 'ahhh that's more comfortable!' but now it seems to be a regular on off thing, sometimes it looks normal and other time she looks like she's winking.

She's just been pelting in, out and around the furniture so doesn't seem to be affecting her sight!

I think I will still give the vets a call in the morning tho, just to put my mind at rest, hopefully. I have a couple of pics which I'll try to post, although it's hard to tell because of her colouring!

I can see what you mean, and it does not look normal. I would be wanting the vet to have a good look in and around the eye in case there is an infection in the socket causing inflammation.

Thumper only has both eyes closed if she's in a deep, deep sleep. When she's just dozing, one is always half open.

I also can't see the pics clearly because using phone, but like someone said before me, you know your bun and if your not happy about it, i would take her back to the vet.

Ps, she's beautiful!

Just bathe that lazy eye for a couple of days and see how it is as it could be an eyelash that is irritating his eye. Is the eye running at all?

Aww yea that does look odd and uncomfortable!!

Let us know what the vets say, maybe take that picture with you to prove it, if she has 'normal' eyes when you take her!

Its more the open eye I'm worried about as it looks bulgy sometimes, and can even see the whites sometimes when the other eye is relaxed. When we got her she always looked dozey eyed so that's why the open one seems odd to me.

She's booked in for 3.30 today, I've looked again this morning and it still a bit bulgy.

She's been, the vet wasn't really sure what it could be, but she could see what we meant, she looked at the eye with a torch and checked her responsiveness, then went to ask for a second and third opinion and said that it could be one of a few things. It could be glaucoma (sp?) but she doesnt seem in any pain so that was pushed aside, it could be a dental problem, if a tooth is pushing up and making the eye protude, or could be something behind the eye where she would have to have an ultrasound.

Has anyone put their rabbits through an ultrasound before? I'm not sure how safe that would be

We've booked to see the vet who is specialising in eyes next week, he wasn't there today, and in the meantime have been told to give her some metacam in case its some inflammatory.

Then we had to pay £20 for being even more concerned!

So none the wiser really Hmmm , she's just let me give her a good ole stroke though, which she doesn't generally let us do!

That's always the pay off for going to the vets - suddenly you are the good guy! It's the only time ever wants to cuddle. I have had a g.pig ultra sounded before, but it was done as a progression on from an xray. But it was on her belly not her head. At least they could see what you meant and seem to have some ideas about causes.

They just turn into little angels when they go to the vets don't they?!
My two happily let me pick them and hold their backs to my belly for checks at the vets, but put up one heck of a fight at home and kick those back legs out.
Last week they had their check ups and Tigger was quite scared when she was on the table. She stretched herself up my chest for cuddles and kisses and then when it came to injections she buried her head into the crook of my arm. Love

Did they check her teeth and feel her cheeks after wondering if there was a teeth problem?

An ultrasound is a great idea. I've had ultrasound done on me after I had my first baby. It was done to help the healing process (can be used for that as well as to look at things internally) and you don't feel anything at all.

Hoping that you can find out what it is. It might be nothing. It could just be the way her eye is.
