Vet visit today - dental questions! U/D still not normal
As discussed here last time that Bruce and Josephine went to the vet the inexperienced vet told me they both needed their incisors cut, and Josephine needed her molars burred.
I went to the vet with them this morning. I saw my expert vet Kylie... and the other vet was wrong, she said both of their incisors were 100% fine, and grinding against each other well.
But Josephine's molars needed burring. She went in for general anesthetic as the vet said that molars couldn't be treated live. Is this common for those of you who are in the know? I left Bruce with her so he could keep her company, and I didn't want them to become unbonded. Bruce didn't enjoy his stay at the vet, even though all that happened to him was having his front teeth looked at ! Little sook.
They separated them after josephine's surgery until the anesthetic had worn off and she started hopping around and then put the two of them in the same cubicle together. The nurse said that Bruce was a very good boyfriend and cuddled and snuggled her quite well as soon as they were reunited I'm so proud of my boy.
They said it depends on how fast he teeth grow back as to how often the surgery needs to be performed. Does anyone know how often this kind of surgery needs to happen? She's 2 years 4 months old and this is her first dental.
Also the nurse, who funnily enough was from the UK and is here on a working holiday, suggested that I buy Josephine baby food - crushed/powdered oats in flavours such as strawberry, brocoli etc. She said in the vet she worked at in the the UK they gave the dental bunnies that mix every time they have surgery as it encourages them to start eating again. I have never heard of this before? Is this common? Is it even healthy?
Josephine just rewarded me with a pile of 7 poops about half an hour ago. I'm so happy Last time she had a GA she went into stasis. I was so worried after I gave her to the vet to be put under GA I called my mum and cried on the phone for 15 minutes worrying about my baby and whether she was going to be OK. So big smiles from me today

Re: Vet visit today - dental questions! U/D still not normal
Ahh Glad they are okay hun. Quick recovery vibes for josie.
It is quite normal to give then a GA to fix teeth probs. Daisy has his teeth done and always has a GA.
Ive never heard of giving that kind of food before but I do agree its a good idea to tempt them with something yummy to get them eating again.....Fresh parsley does the drick with daisy.
I recently asked Daisys specialist if he could predict how long between each dental visit daisy would need and he said its not something he could do. He did reccomend though upping the intake of Hay as the is the best for teeth grinding and its seems to be doing the trick.

Josephine was offered parsely and refused, but she graciously deigned to eat some newspaper, some hay, and sultanas. She's such a silly girl.
I'm just so relieved. She still looks a little grumpy and disheveled but she is ok.
How do you deal with daisy having so many GAs? I think I would lose my mind from stress and nerves. Although I guess we'd do anything for our buns! The vet was discussing prices and I told her i'd go into massive debt to keep the bunnies happy. She laughed
I might investigate these baby oats as a treat alternative to dried fruit.

Daisy has been having them every 4-6 weeks since october because he has a nasty jaw infection. The first time he went into stasis, but had already stopped eating more or less before that anyway. Also he is a very funny eater and wouldnt eat in the vets either and they kept him all day to watch him which only made the problem worse.
He sees a brilliant specialist now and we take him home as soon as he has come around so we can get him eating straight away. He is a bit woozy and sulky for about 24 hours but seems to bounce back quite well.
As for the stress.......Im sure all the grey hairs im getting are daisy related! I dont get in the states I used to now that he sees the specialist as I have a lot of confidence in him and I know daisy is in the best possible hands, but I do worry.
When he was really poorly in october he had to stay in the ordinary vets for five days.....I lost a stone. Couldnt eat, couldnt sleep and basically spent 5 days crying!

Re: Vet visit today - dental questions! U/D still not normal
Awww little daisy I don't think I could handle five days either! I'd be in a world of stress wondering how my bunny is going and whether they are taking proper care of them! You've get steelier nerves than me I think.
You have to love vets you can trust. They make the world a better place. I love Kylie but the other vets there are rubbish.
Trust such a pretty bunny to be such a fussy eater
Shellypops - my vets do live dentals, but you can't really do live molar dentals - they are so far down the back of the mouth that the rabbit's pure biology and disliking of stuff in their mouths make it impossible. If only the incisors were a problem, they're so much easier to do. Or at least, that's my understanding.

Steelier nerves! I forgot to mentio that I rang the vets about 14 times a day and insisted on going down there twice a day to syringe feed him myself!
Each day I took down more fresh herbs and a fresh bag of mixed veggies.
Im surprised they didnt bolt the door and refuse to answer the phone.

Nawww that's so wonderful that you love him so. I didn't expect josephine to be under a GA today so had to run down the street to buy her some food and hay... i returned with about a week's worth of food
At least they let you visit him. My vets don't like owners coming down into where the surgery patients are kept, they prefer to fetch the bunnies for you hmmm

Oh I know not much about dental buns, as Bobbys teeth are perfect bless her!.. Carlo's sis had completeley twisted teeth down to bad breeding
and Carlo gets a teary eye.. bless him.. it doesn't bother him tho, The rescue told me it was a possibilty when I adopted him! I have been so lucky this far to not have any real probs with my girlie Bobby.. but am taking Carlo down for his teeth to be checked and his nails clipped..
If he has got dental probs then so be it.. I will get him all the treatment he needs

Re: Vet visit today - dental questions! U/D still not normal
Update.
Josephine's eating (still not the same amount as usual) and pooing (quite dark poos but still). She still doesn't seem to have recovered though - she still wants to lie down all the time, doesn't fight me when I pick her up, and is generally sluggish.
Bruce groomed her. She hates it when Bruce grooms her because he never learnt bunny etiquette 101 and his grooming makes the fur messier and it sticks up in all directions. But she's not been fighting him and not even grooming herself afterward to fix her hair! I'm starting to get worried, is it normal for a rabbit to still be affected 24 hours after a GA?

Really glad they're ok, what a relief for you
Re: Vet visit today - dental questions! U/D still not normal
Daisy is normally groggy for about 24 hours. Perhaps the GA is taking its time to get out of her system. The fact that she is eating is really really good though.

Re: Vet visit today - dental questions! U/D still not normal
hi - is she back to normal.
Jiggy used to have a dental every 10 weeks but we go every 5 weeks now - after a couple of dentals you can start to predict how long it will be and then book in before they get too bad.
When they do jiggy's molars they have clamps that pull the cheeks back/open the jaw/hold the tongue out the way and the teeth are so far back that with jiggy my vet can't even see his bad teeth until he is under GA and everything is clamped open so there is no way it could be done conscious. Was the same with Foxy, my dental rabbit who died in July.

Re: Vet visit today - dental questions! U/D still not normal
I've had some rabbits reactly really poorly to a GA and others who you wouldn't even know had been knocked out! It really can be quite an individual trait. Is she still receivng any additional pain relief? Some rabbits seem to be very sensitive to dental work and may need it for a couple of days afterwards too.
