Post by McQueen Sun Oct 24, 2010 10:19 am

I thought i would ask on here as well for a wider opinion.

Does anyone know a rough price guide for an ultra sound?

McQueen had to go to the vet yesterday as his not appeared to well - nothing that seemed overly seriouse, His wee smelt funny and his been extra fussy with his food. He has to got back on Wed evening to have a check with Cristobel. His on a course of antibiotics and Metacam to rule out any other kind of bactira. However if there is no change by Wed he may need an ultrasound – they think he could have something like stomach cancer or something else nastyin there.

She said there is a hard like ball in his stomach but we are unsure if it is his stomach or not. I have felt it when giving him a stomach massage. That is why Cristobel is going to check on Wed as she is more rabbit savvy. Though his stomach goes hard, soft, doey, and it can balloon, and at the vet it was kind of hard and that is what she was probably feeling, which is quite normal for him but probably not normal for rabbits. I told her about his loud gurgling sounds after his eaten and she said that is normal. However when his gurguling his very quite. He hasn’t been as active and his eating pattern is all over the place. Other then that his fine. His chest, heart, teeth and eyes are all very good. Though i did need reminding that he is getting old (for a big rabbit). After having Toby who was stone age i am struggling to think of 4 as old!

Also i have noticed when he lays on his side you can see a bump in his stomach?

Oh crikey, I really hope that it isn't anything serious, as for the cost of an ultrasound it can vary so much in price, I have had them done on bunnies and there hasn't been a charge, I have also been charged around £20, but I have know people pay £80 - £100, it depends on the vet

I really hope you can get to the bottom of McQueens problem and good luck, please let us know how you get on

Thank you. His on Metacam and 1.97 ml of Baytril, although it is somewhat a drama giving him either! I not giving him as much Metacam because I am not a fan of the stuff and I don’t really think his in pain. I have had a few tips on giving buns Baytril but unfortunately pinning him down is not an option. Laughing

My bun has been on metacam for almost a year now and has no probs at all if that helps. He has a wonderful very excellent specialist who told me that the benefits to the bun if the bun is in pain far outweigh the risks. I dont know if that makes you feel better about giving it - he really does know his stuff.

I also found that when i stopped forcing daisy to take it he decided he quite likes it and takes it willingly, licking it from the syringe.

I have the same problem as you with the Baytril. The little monster has to be sausage rolled and forced to take it. Luckily he forgives quickly.

Hope that helps.

What does a rabbits stomach feel like - i mean the actual stomach. Because McQueen has been picky with his food his stomach has been empty and that is when i feel this "lump". I also put it by the vet about his obsession with cardboard and paper, he will favour that over his food every time and there has been days when i have had to put some cardboard in his cage before he starved! Yet in his cage he would have his hay, greens, pellets, fruit. He goes through fazes where he will go off his pellets and only eat hay, then eat greens and not hay or pellets. At the moment his off spinach and his pellets, yet next month he might be off his greens and hay and only eat pellets. It’s weird. He has been tried on all brands but eventually the novelty wears off again. Yet he will favour cardboard every time. The vet didn’t quite understand this. This must be why his guts is all over the place.

Hi Emma Wave Sorry to hear that McQueen's not well. I don't really have any advice, but I hope you can get him sorted. It does all sound very strange, the eating habits etc.

Could it be an impaction that isn't big enough to cause a complete blockage, but partial one? If it moves around, it could explain the on-off eating?

Vibes for your guy.

Hiya!! I really am not sure to be honest, I am rubbish at giving advice but hope McQueen will be okay. Could it be a hernia at all through the muscle wall? Hmmm

Also, if your having trouble getting him to eat I would recommend trying him on some muesli mix if your vet says it's okay as this has worked wonders with my buns Smile

No advice on the ultrasound Im afraid. But me & my Mum have always noticed that when poorly, our buns have always had a serious paper/cardboard craving. No idea why, but its so odd - they do get obsessed as you said. Hope he is feeling better soon, bless him xx

Now his only eating banana!!!! Obviously he would favour cardboard if he had any in front of him. His not right but I am not sure its going to be something the vet can pinpoint.

I don’t think feeding him mixed feed would be a good idea because he only eats what he likes as it is. Plus he would probably go off that eventually as well. He will eat his pellets but only when his starving (hence why his so thin).

We have a possible diagnosis for McQueen. Cristobel confirms that there is a mass in his stomach, bigger then a tennis ball. She can’t tell what it is because she didn’t want to press to hard in case it is what she thinks it could be, which is a blockage from the kidney to where it is the urine goes. If the urine is sitting there and building up this would explain what he is passing smells so strong.

He will be going for an ultra sound on Wed and if need be, be opened up there and then to save the stress of the travel. Cristobel has only seen this in one rabbit so it can’t be too common.

Sorry i meant on Sat he will be going for his ultra sound. But it wont be with Cristobel his vet, we have to do an hours trip else where. So if he needs opening up she can do it on that day.

Well that was a waste of time! We went there; he had the ultra sound and couldn’t see anything because of the gas in his gut. But she can feel something, her first words where “hmm interesting” lol. However she thinks its his gut, Cristobel (McQueen’s vet) thinks its near his kidneys.

So I suppose where we go from here is he gets opened up by his own vet and Cristobel is just prepared for anything.
