(been to the vet! case resolved) Black teeth Empty (been to the vet! case resolved) Black teeth

Post by Lottie Sat Jan 23, 2010 2:58 pm

Hi, this morning, when I was doing my bunnies monthly nail cutting, weight check and health check, I noticed Kenzo's teeth are BLACK, so are his inside lips and his tongue is very dark.
I'm realy worried about this, I didn't find anything about black bunny teeth on the internet!
I took a picture but the quality is very bad. I'll post it anyways, hopefully you can see a bit...

Never seen or heard that before, has Kenzo been chewing on a black pen, or are the teeth black from the inside out?Could he have bitten into a live cable (although I don't knw that it would do this?) Does he seem ok in himself?

If you can't find something that he's chewed on then callling your vet to see if they know may answer it - what a Shocked

No he hasnt eaten anything anormal, or chewed on anything. I checked all over the place and checked again.
Plus it's not dirt or ink, I put my fingers on his teeth to see if the black came off and it doesn't come off!!
He seems ok though, he's as cuddly and greedy as always.
I guess if no one can give me advice on here I'll call the vet, but I have to wait until monday...
I'm so so worried! pale

It's a very unusual thing, as you say, there's nothing on the web, and even f this had come up on another forum, it would appear on a search. But you never know, someone may have had it before, keep checking, it's a bit slower on the week-ends here. Vibes for you both, I would be worried too.

I've never come across this before and it sounds like it may be some sort of enamel erosion or dental infection, if it isn't anything he has eaten or chewed on. Definately worth getting a vet onto if it is also affecting tissue as necrosis is often black in colour. Hmmm

I don't think that is what it is as I am sure he would be showing some serious discomfort by now if that was the case but I do think it needs looking by a professional.

He doesn't show any signs of pain or anything, but he has been eating hay all day long! I had to fill the hay rack again and again, he ate about half of a pack of hay wich normaly lasts about 3 or 4 days!
I don't know if this has anything to do with his teeth... Shocked

(been to the vet! case resolved) Black teeth Empty Re: (been to the vet! case resolved) Black teeth

Post by Lottie Tue Jan 26, 2010 11:52 am

So yesterday (monday) I called the vet about Kenzo's black teeth, and I just came back from the apointment today.
Lots of worries for nothing!! Kenzo's black teeth isn't a sickness!
I will try and translate the conversation the vet and I had after he examined Kenzo.

-Vet: Lottie, do you have any cactus at home?
-Me: yes my mom has a yuka (type of cactus, not sure of the spelling) in her room... But the bunnies don't have access to that room!
-Vet: Well Kenzo found a way to eat it, the juice of those cactus is red, that made his teeth black.
-Me: Shocked How can you know for sure?
-Vet: My rabbit did the same thing...

Laughing When I got home I checked my mom's cactus and there were little teeth marks on it! I don't know how he did it.
The vet said this type of cactus isn't toxic for rabbits, so its all ok, the color will just take a while to disapear!!
And I didn't pay the vet visit! cheers

I feel so much better now, I was realy worried about this! Laughing

OMG in a way that's quite funny, I hope he didn't end up with any spikes stuck in his mouth! How amazing that your vets rabbit had done it too, we were wondering if it was something he had eaten.

Glad it's had a good outcome, will the staining just fade with time?

Yes the color should disapear, but the vet said it may take a while.
Such a silly bunny, honestly, he has tons of hay, fresh veggies everyday, fruits sometimes, treats... but mister Kenzo has to go eat the cactus No

I'm so, so glad it was nothing serious. I can't imagine how cactus could possibly be pleasant to eat - but then I'm not a bunny.

Kenzo sounds a real character.

Sooz, you will need to put that onto one of your famous stickies! We are probably the only forum in the world that knows that piece of info. (been to the vet! case resolved) Black teeth 811805

.

That's very probably true. I wonder if any other varieties of cactus do it, we could do a very small article about it to go in the care section.
