Felix has an abscess
I thought Felix's face looked a little strange yesterday and wondered if something nasty was brewing, but he was eating and seemed happy enough. I gave him some Baytril last night and took him to the vet this morning.
He has a couple of abscesses, one under his jawline and another in his cheek. Both abscesses were emptying into his mouth, and his cheek was slightly reddened. The vet masked him and lanced and cleaned them both out.
He is inside tonight in the spare room looking very sorry for himself. He has had the right side under his jaw shaved and looks a bit odd. He is eating fine and we have lots of poos. Have asked that he is put onto Septrin and the vet has given me this and Baytril to give him. I was in tonight learning how to inject him and am to give him a shot once every 24 hours, which I am not really looking forward to. Watched the nurse tonight and then had a go at injecting a tiny bit of saline.
Some vibes please for my poor wee guy who hasn't had much luck this year.

Re: Felix has an abscess
Thanks SJ. They just pop up so quickly. He's on baytril and after reading your thread, I asked for Septrin too. Hoping that helps.

Re: Felix has an abscess
Sorry to hear this Nickie. Mandibular abscesses are just plain nasty to deal with, especially as they are so inaccessible and when they drain into the mouth it seriously limits the treatment options available.
I really hope he responds to the Septrin.

I'm so sorry Nickie, I hope the anti B's kick in soon, lots of vibes for Felix and you xx
Re: Felix has an abscess
Oh Nickie, I'm so sorry to hear this. How nasty. Sounds as though it is being tackled as agressively as possible, as quickly as possible. Fabulous that hes still eating/pooing. Bless his heart. You did so well to spot it this soon, I always worry that I'd miss one with their jaws being so nobbley anyway. You are having such a bad time. Sending hugs xx

Re: Felix has an abscess
Well first injection went OK although it was nerve-wrecking doing it for the first time. He was very good and didn't move at all. Have been out tonight as a colleague is leaving. When I came home, I found that Felix is out of the box and loose in the bedroom (which doesn't have a carpet as the flooring has just been replaced). He has poo'd a lot and pee'd in the corner! Which is really good. He seems quite lively, although wants NOTHING to do with me!!
Am planning to put him into the hutch tomorrow and close it so he isn't loose, but not inside. He seems OK so far, so hope that the ABX works. They were just going to give my Baytril, but because I know that you guys use Septrin for abscesses, I knew to ask for that too.

Re: Felix has an abscess
Hercules
He is back outside to the garden this morning. Spent the night in our spare room which has just been refloored. He had a lovely plastic crate but decided to get out and investigate. Went in this morning and he had literally poo'd everywhere!!! Although he had gone back into the crate to pee. He seems just fine and is eating well.
He came bouncing over to me this morning, then saw the towel and remembered what I was going to do. However, once he was caught and bundled he was a little gent and didn't struggle. I managed a much smoother injection this time and wasn't as anxious.
He is on septrin for a fortnight then I will take him back for a check up to see how things are. fingers crossed.

Re: Felix has an abscess
I'm sorry I missed this before Nickie.
Sorry to hear that Felix has an abcess. You're doing well injecting him, I'd be a nervous wreck! Really hope the Septrin helps him.
He sounds perky enough - and his guts are obviously moving well!
Sending him lots of vibes x

Re: Felix has an abscess
The injections are easier than you think. The nurse who taught me was so lovely. Gave me lots of pointers and then let me practise on Felix with a little saline. However, it would be SO easy to inject yourself - there is time!
Wolfie was really good about him being away and just sniffed his neck where he'd been lanced. I stayed with them for a while to ensure no scuffles broke out and would then have just kept Felix in the hutch, but they were fine.
He lovely and perky today. I plan to do his injection at teatime tonight as I am going down to Glasgow for a TKD competition at 5.00 am tomorrow and won't be back until the early hours of Sunday.
Thanks for the vibes. Keep them coming. xx

Re: Felix has an abscess
I will happily do that, but the best thing is to get your vet practice to show you and let you have a go because describing it is one thing, but doing it feels a little different.

Re: Felix has an abscess
So pleased Felix is improving..... you are so brave.... Pumpkin has to go back on Septrin today for his ear... he really doesnt like having Septrin orally and can go gastric... the vet suggested last week that I inject him ... I just said no ... as I thought I might inject him wrong or myself , Im allergic to Septrin..... now I feel like I should have at least had a go for his sake
Im going to see how he goes giving it to him orally over the wekend, if it all goes wrong I will have to be brave next week and go for these injections...
I presume also they must be less likely to get gastric with injections ...
Dawn

Re: Felix has an abscess
The injections do have a far less severe impact on the GI tract when given than oral antibiotics do.
Are you aware that you can get probiotic supplements to give to rabbits taking antibiotics to help limit the impact they have on the good gut flora which keeps the gut functioning? I usually give them for the course of the antibiotics and two weeks afterwards.

Re: Felix has an abscess
I only heard about probiotics for bunny when I joinied here... I take probiotics myself but dont know where to buy them from for bunnies.
Ive just been told Pumpkin might be on antibiotics for 3-6 wks and think probiotics would be helpful.
PS sorry this thread has gone off topic...

Re: Felix has an abscess
I've used probiotics a few times and they do make a difference, you can usually buy them from Pets@Home I think they sell Vetark probiotics or you can buy them online, but if you do go for a good probiotic
