Daisy's Abscess Diary UD IMPROVEMENT? p16x
Day 1 - Sat 9th April 2011
How it all started.
As some of you will know, 18 months ago daisy became poorly and wasn't behaving normally. He had recently had his very first dental and should have been on the road to recovery, but I knew something was wrong.
Seven trips to the vet later, where nothing wrong could be found, we were referred to the Mr Chitty who diagnosed Daisy with an Abscess in his jaw and sinus. We were told that making him better would be a long road, and indeed it was. If fact we have not yet reached the end yet.
We were hopeful back in October (a full year after diagnosis) that the nasty infection had gone. Daisy was a new bun, happy and healthy full of cheekiness and beans.
Unfortunately this week I felt something was wrong with him - lots of tiny things but I knew he wasn't right bless him. Mr Chitty X-Ray'd him today and confirmed our fears - its back.
So Im going to keep this diary of his progress - our good days and our bad days, and maybe it will help other buns out there. We are lucky that he is getting a fabulous specialist to look after him, but not all buns are as lucky.
Todays Visit
Today is officially Day one of treatment.
He is on 0.5ml of Septril twice daily and a 5kg dose of Metacam twice daily (daisy weighs 1.5 kg).
He has had a GA today so is rather groggy. I was very worried about stasis following the GA and the hour long trip back, but he has eated a little, which is an excellent sign.
We have to call Mr C on tuesday with an update. He has had oodles of cuddles from his mummy and daddy and we are trying to keep the house nice and quiet for him to recover from the GA.
I will go and bother him every couple of hours with food to encourage the little monkey to eat.

Day 2
Well today has been a complete nightmare. When I got up this morning he hadnt eaten a thing over night and wouldn't be tempted at all. So we critical cared him this morning and this seemed to give him a bit of a bump start.
He has munched the odd strand of hay, plantain and herb on and off all day, but mainly only when it is waggled in his face until he is bored of saying no. His poo's were tiny this morning but by this evening they had started to get a bit bigger. We have given him some more Crit Care about half an hour ago.
I really didnt know whether to give it to him of not as the stress of syringing him could undo all the good eating work we have done this afternoon, but in the end I decided that he needs to be fit and strong to fight this, so decided to get some fibre and vitamins in him. We also added a scoop of pro-biotic to the mix to help his tummy.
He really is a poorly boy, he's so lethargic and has no energy at all. I think this is a mix of the lack of food and also the abscess too of course.
Ive barely held it together today, but I am trying to be brave for him as I dont want him picking up my stressed vibes.
Im dreading going to work and leaving him tomorrow as he really needs his mummy right now. I can pop home at lunchtime though so thats something.
Keep those vibes coming hoppers. If ever a bun and their mummy needed them, its us.

When Caspian used to have his 'turns' going to work was the worst thing because he needed such constant care. In the end I took him with me and he used to sit in the office so he could have his meds and hourly feeds.
Hope he is doing OK today.

Day 3
Thank you everyone for all your kind thoughts and wishes they are helping.
I rang Mr C today as I was worried that daisy hadnt eaten again overnight.
So we are back off up to Andover tomorrow and daisy is going to have some more tests as Mr C thought that he should be responding to treatment by now. I am of course terrified something else will be found, and also that the stress could tip the boy over the edge, but I need to make him better. I love him so much.
We critical cared again today. He is eating teeney weeney bits but is not at all his normal little self.
Signing off to go and cuddle my boy. x x

Katie, I just wish there was something I could do to help you. I know how worrying it is and how helpless you feel.
Thank goodness you have such an experienced vet who knows what to expect and how to help you and Daisy. Sending massive hugs and vibes to you.
I was out of the office most of the day so couldn't get in contact.

Re: Daisy's Abscess Diary UD IMPROVEMENT? p16x
Does Daisy usually take a while to get over a GA? Even if nothing is wrong with Josephine, it usually takes her 10 days to start acting normally again after a GA.
Sending healing vibes. Hopefully Dr. Chitty can find out exactly what is wrong with him and deal with it. More tests are good - that way you know exactly what is wrong and can address it, instead of not realising and have the underlying problem become worse.
Hugs Katie and nose rubs to Daisy
