Goodbye my darling Gloria
Darling Gloria, I can't believe that I am writing your epitaph. Where do I start!
You came to us in August 2007 from the SSPCA Rescue Centre near Dundee. You were to be a companion for Wolfie who had recently lost his partner, Holly. I phoned around the various Centres for a female bunny and they said they had a 2 year old lionhead girl for adoption. We were going to a concert at Glasgow so went to see you on the way home. When we got there and I saw you for the first time, I was a bit scared of you. You were much bigger than I thought and you were fiesty. The SSPCA lady took you out of the hutch - not an easy process - and offered me the opportunity to hold you. I declined with alacrity!! You thumped and grunted and I wasn't going to touch you.
However, you were beautiful. I had never seem such a beautiful mane and you had enormous brown eyes. I decided to take a chance on you, even though I wasn't a fan of lop-earred bunnies (I have since grown to love them). When I took you to the car, my OH couldn't get over the size of you and we felt a little scared for Wolfgang. You were big enough to eat him.
I called you Gloria because you were such a glamorous rabbit. You were like a rabbit version of a 50s Hollywood star. I could imagine you with blond flowing locks, a white shirt and a pointy bra, and lashings of scarlet lipstick. You were fiesty and fiery and nobody's fool.
With Wolfie and you, it was hatred at first sight! You were big and scary and he was desperate to be your boss. You were not so keen and resisted strenuously. We then had a couple of months of enforced separation, when you took it in turns to be in the run. Eventually you busted out of that area and you and Wolfie had a huge bust up. I came out to find fur everywhere and both of you lying exhausted but happy. Mercifully no-one was hurt and afterwards you bonded so well that you were always somewhere squashed together into a small area. He would be grooming you and then hopefully asking for you to reciprocate - which you hardly ever did back - after which he would then pretend he had never asked at all. I know it annoyed him because he would wag him tail afterwards sometimes.
You and he made a marvellous escape team. You were always on the lookout for a way out and if you got out, you loved it. However, your love of an extra meal always meant you were caught quickly. You just loved eating and if you got one over on Wolfie, it was even better. You hated being touched but if food was involved, all the usual rules went out of the window. You would even take pellets from my lips!
Your generous proportions earned a few nicknames. The kids and OH called you Fat Flump, but I knew you were just big boned. It was so sad that you ended up weighing about the same as your much smaller husband. It was such a sad thing to see.
I'm sorry that I didn't realise you had lost the sight in your eye and that it was hurting you. You hid it so well and it was only when you stopped being so interested in food - something that was very unusual - that I began to suspect you were ill. The rest is history.
I hope you forgive me for choosing to end your life tonight. I did it out of love and compassion. You had suffered so much this week from the stress of being held, injected endlessly, not to say anything of the ordeal of a big operation and its post-operative complications.
I will remember you fondly sitting in your box in the garden, watching the world go by with your luscious flowing mane and your hovercroft skirt billowing out.
Goodbye my beautiful girl. I'll always remember how soft your nose was. Sorry I won't be able to give it a noserub any more.

What a beautiful tribute Nickie to your 'big boned' girl.
