Have you thought about asking your vet if they will consult a specialist?
Good luck tomorrow, ease let us know how he gets on.
Sending you big hugs Hun, I know how it feels to have a poorly bunny, it's the worst. X x x x x x x
Hi Katie,
When you say a specialist what do you mean ? Our vet is in Suffolk and has had experience of looking after buns for 20 +yrs, she has special degree or whatever its called in looking after/surgery for small animals... She always seems very knowledgable on buns.... Does that sound like she is a specialist ?

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
She may already be "specialised" in that case. It certainly sounds like she would know more about buns than the average vet.
There are people around the country who are specialists in bunnys, we take daisy to one because his problems were difficult to diagnose and treat and our vets wern't able to help. We were referred to him initially because our vets didnt know what to do next.
Good luck at the vets this morning hun, let us know how he gets on.

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
Hi ,
Just got back.... Vet had a good look at both ears the one spasming still has a lot of gunk in even after 9 dys of canuaral , even though a lot has gone.. Vet can now see that the ear is really inflammed , it shouldnt be that inflammed after 3 lots of Septrin and 9 dys of canaural..
She thinks its might be fungal infection... so we are switching to Surolan drops twice a day , which will cover , mites, antibiotic, anti inflam and fungus.... We discussed switching to Baytril but she wants to hold off and see how he does on Surolan alone for a few days.
It is worrying, why its so inflammed in that ear, she cant even see his ear drum
Thanks for all your support... Its been an easier day as Pumps has been very active and playing even though he has been scratching like mad, in a way at least we now know its his ear.... and he is still eating God Bless him...

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
Pumpkin is ahving a bad day.... after 7 dys of Surolan his face spasms have really calmed... His ear was still twitching but not as bad as before...
Today he has woken up and its all gone crazy again, his little eye is spasming so much and his face and ear.... poor little man.... he is miserable , wants a lot of cuddles and been outside but only for 15 minutes... He is still eating thankfully.... We are going back to the vets tomorrow , hope she can see further down his ear now but no more wax has come out so I am presuming it is an inner ear infection again and he will need more antibiotics... Baytril this time as Septrin just hasnt worked.

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
Took Pumpkin back to the vets.. his ear is still gunked up , she thinks it might be or has been a middle/outer ear infection and that his ear drum maybe perforated but she cant see it....
We are going to leave ear alone for 2 days and Thurs morning to take a swab to see if she can find what bacteria might be causing causing this....It is baffling that septrin and canaural/surolan havent worked.... Will keep him on painkiller in the meantime.
As its a bank holiday we are not likely to get any results back till next Tues . She might start him on another antibiotic on Thurs depending on how his ear looks....
Guess its like a person if you have a perforated eardrum antibiotics don't work you just have to wait for it to heal....
She took wax out of both bunnies ears and looked under a microscope there is no sign of any mites,s so thats one thing...
He is still having a better day today than yesterday which is great..... when we got home from the vet he did his urine dance and then woofed down a load of kale, before laying on the sofa... typical man !
Im trying to remain positive but feeling upset as this has gone on for 2 mths now.... had a good cry when I got back from the vets... need to pull myself together as he could be much worse and I am so thankful he is eating ...

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
HI,
Took Pumpkin back to vets this morning... she took a swab and we sent it off to the lab... it needs to culture for 2 days.. oh I wish it wasnt a bank holiday, got to wait until Tues for the result. Just hope it shows its a bacteria that we can treat ok.
Pumpkin hasnt had anything put down his ear for 2 dys his spasms do seem a little better... she can still see that inside the ear looks sore but cant see the ear drum still.
If swabs are negative vets says she will need put him under aneasthetic and have his ear cleaned out and also an x ray to see what is the problem...

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
Oh Dawn love, I know what you mean about bank holidays, they tend to come when we need or want something urgently too and we have to wait for the Tuesday.
Poor little Pumpkin, I am glad to hear the spasms are lessening. I too hope they find something easily treatable and you can put all this dreadful stress behind you and Pumpkin will feel well again.
Please keep us posted over the weekend, it helps to talk.
Hugs
