We are having problems with Pud and his ear, when we gave him a home with us he had severe ear mites and I think they did a lot of damage to his ear and wouldn't be surprised if that's why he is deaf. We are waiting for the culture test results at the moment.
The vet was very negative about the eardrum growing back.... but its amazing.... we are still worried that the ear / face spams might be perminant ... but as they have just started reducing we are hoping that is a good sign...
Sending lots of bunny hugs to little Pud , hope he will be ok... We had to wait 4-5 dys for bacterial culture and another 5 days for yeast infection results from same swab.... so that 10 dys for full results to be back..
Hope that helps.
Dawn
Yes we were told about 10 days and he had his ear flushed out on the 14th June as I've just looked at the receipt so it should be no doubt Monday when our vet is back. It seem's forever when you are waiting doesn't it !
It certainly does.... hang on in there... Hopefully you will know on Monday... I didnt get my hopes up as a lot of swabs come back with nothing just like Pumpkins did.... we are treating him with antibiotics/steriods anyway... Pus isnt there for nothing and the Bytril didnt work.. he seems much better on Septrin.

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
HI,
Its 6 weeks later. Pumpkin was doing better after the ear wash/4 wks of septrin... but then it all started again after 10 dys off antibiotics
We seem to be back a square one except he is worse His ear / head / cheek / lip is all spasming. For the last 2 wks his face keeps being contracted / in spasm the same side of his bad ear. He has been on 2 wks of septrin/ Loxicam/ steriod ear drops and there has been no change.
He is still managing to eat ok and go out and about.... we are back at the vets today to consider washing his ear out again...
Not been on much as been feeling so down with it all, we have also been doing the garden up , the buns not have a much larger football pitch rather than a carpark !

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
Oh I'm so sorry to hear this Pud has a severe ear infection in his left ear and the vet took a culture and he has been on 'Easotic' antibiotic ear drops once a day, an ear cleanser (Derma Pet) once a day before his ear drops, and then an injection every 6 days of 'Alamycin'. He was back at the vet's last week for a check up and she said the ear is looking brilliant but we have to keep up the ear drops, cleanser and injections for another 6 months.
Sending mega 'healing' Vibes for Pumpkin xxxxx
I'm sorry you are so down with it all and sending you hugs xx

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
hi Dawn,
I am so sorry that pumkin is still struggling with this.
Perhaps your vet would consider contacting a specialist such as John Chitty. There may be something she hasnt thought of. He really may be able to help and I know that he consults with vets all the time to help them out when something is stumping them.

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
Hi,
Thank you both for your replies ......
We've just got back from the vets . Pumpkins ear is really bad again, full of pus lower down, beginning of middle ear, so he is having it cleared out again. Last time we did this he was much better , this time we are going to keep him on antibiotics for much longer.
I hope and pray he makes it through his op in the morning.. he has had so much surgery this year with his ear and teeth , its always been a worry.
Will update tomorrow with progress, thanks so much for your support it means a lot.

Hugs and nose rubs for little Pumpkin. Sometimes you need a very long course of antibiotics if an issue is bad. Hope he improves soon

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
thanks for all your best wishes ...
Pumpkin is home now , his breathing was bad under sedation for 45 mins, he is very sleepy. They had to clean out both ears as they had pus in them, why arent the antibiotics working. Vet has now put antimycin down his ears.
He is to continue on Septrin and will check his ears on Friday.
We saw a different vet this evening who says he thinks the pus is due to pasturella ....
Really worried about him, hope he will be ok....he has eaten a few bits of greens which is a good sign.

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
Hi,
Went back to the vets today with Pumpkin .. she explained the pus in both ears was so much when cleared out... there is no sign of either eardrum.....not sure what else to do, we've already tried 3 lots of antibiotics , steriods etc .....
We are leaving off steriod drops and trying diluted solution of iodine as an earwash . Whilst on Septrin and Loxicam.
I am suppose to do iodine ear washes twice a day... vet has used this for dogs and cats before . I have searched the internet and have found this is well tolerated , so we are going to give it a go...
Pumpkin seems to be doing ok and is eating , the severe spasming of the ear has calmed since the ear wash on Wednes... his face is still spasming...

Oh I'm so sorry, I keep hoping that their will be some improvement, have you tried Derma Pet TrizEDTA ear cleanser this is the one we have been given off our vet for Pud's severe ear infection and it's actually licensed for rabbits, we are finding it brilliant, we have to use this along with his ear drops and injections every 6 days for another 6 month's but already there is an improvement.

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
its all gone wrong again... a few days after the antibioitic + iodine down the ear that seemed to be working his face started to twitch again.. took little man back to the vets , she was shocked to see wax already down the ear so soon after the wash out... one ear still looked sore.. so we tried anotehr lot of engamycin ... it didnt seem to make a difference.. so tonight decided to afain try the iodine which worked last time.. but this time its just made his ear worse his poor little ear is now spasming.. Ive given him loxicam and he has eaten and had a cuddle.. praying it settles down again. Dont know what is going on ... nothing makes sense, we are confused and so is the vets.. I suggested she call Chitty ... just dont know what else to do except go back on steriod drops in the ear but another vet isnt keen to do this again...
Will let u know what we decided to do ... right now I just want his ear to calm down again.... poor little man feel like we have made him worse ... we r doing the best we can but its just guess work and doesnt seem good enough ....

I would definitely say that contacting John Chitty would be helpful for everyone. Fingers crossed that some course of action that works comes to light.

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
I think John might be a very good course of action, he'll probably x-ray and take it from there. I'm realyl sorry to hear it's returned, thought you had this one nipped

Hi Jay ,
We have already x rayed Pumpkins ears .. Im in suffolk and there is no way we can take little pumpkin down south .. vets does seem up for talking to other specialists even though she has worked with primarily with bunnies for 20 yrs .. even the bunny rescue centres goes to my vet from miles around as she is so good. ... she thinks out the box but this has us stumped..
Do you know of the nearest specialist to Suffolk ?
Pumpkin is no better since putting the iodine in his ear last night .. have another app with vet tmorrow.

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
been back to the vets today... his right ear is still inflammed .... but as he appears to have had a reaction to iodine wash, we are going to not put anything down his ear for a week.
Vet wants to stop Septrin as he has lost body mass and she is worried that he is not coping with all the meds .... He ahs started eating more today adn has had a run in the gdn.... will go back next week.

Hi Becki,
Orginally we thought it was a tooth problem and removed a bad tooth. We have also x rayed his head..
His first ear wash 4 wks ago showed dead earmites and pus, but we couldnt grow any bacteria to see if it was an infection, but have been treating it as an infection due to the level of pus and inflammation / no eardrum... Plus his face/ear twitching which we presume is an inflamed nerve but not really sure.
His face/cheek has been going into intermittent daily spasm , its quite noticable that his little cheek is being lifted up .I have taken video of this and will put it up on u tube hopefully this weekend.
His 2nd ear wash last week in both ears showed pus and ear wax. He doesnt have ear drums in either ear now
This is what we have tried so far .. might have spelt it wrong
earmite shots.
Canaural
Premed - steriodear drops 2 x 2 daily
Other anti fungal/antibiotic drops - Suralan
Loxicam
iodin daily ear wash (last week)
engamycin topicaol inserted into ear post op (last week).
Septrin (3 wks) then break and then repeated so total 6 wks.
Baytril (1 wk)
He is still eating , grooming and running round .... he has off days when the ear/face/lip twitching and spasms are bad and needs painkiller which seems to help.
If anyone can suggest anything please let us know..

Re: Ear mites / Ear infection update
Hmm, Well it may not help as it's a different cause etc but essentially Rhia's is an ear infection same as Pumpkin. Was it a C & S test he had done to determine which bacteria you were dealing with? If so & it didn't bring anything up, it might still be worth a shot with what has worked so far for Rhia. She is on dupaphen injections & marbocyl - and a high dose of metacam. Is he on pain relief already? If not I would definitely insist on this. Sorry if I am teaching you to suck eggs. Sending hugs xx
