UD - been to the vets 14/4/09
Well, she was taken to rabbit and cat clinic, and she saw a vet as soon as I got in. she had all her history from the past vet. I don't really know what sort of news it is, but she just said I have to keep persevering with Hermy. Kim (vet) knows I've done all that I can... literally; she said I can't do much more. She felt Hermys stomach, and she said she is pleased to know that she is not so bloated that it can't be treated. She said she's seen worse that she knows they won't survive. But thankfully, I took Hermy the next day after it happened. Kim is worried about her stomach, but she thinks with my perseverance, the gas should pass soon. She told me to continue feeding Critical Care (she gave me a bag for free!), because there is no obstruction there, and the main reason she is not eating, pooing, passing wind is because she is in so much pain . I feel like this is my fault, but I was giving her Meloxidyl (the generic metacam) twice a day. According to Kim, I have been overdosing her twice as much... but this is what the vet at the other practice told me to give her, and that’s what was written on her history. It looks like the meloxidyl was ineffective throughout the whole course
But, someone mentioned to me that Metacam doses have increased?
well, now she is on the branded Metacam, half the dose, and we have to see if the change in company makes all the difference. She also had metoclopramide injection, and a metacam injection to last the day. She is on Zantac twice a day too.
Hermy has deteriorated so much, that she is now anorexic. Kim couldn't inject the drugs into her, they came out straight away and spilled over her fur, because there is nothing there to inject. She had to do it on her bum where there was more muscle. She is literally skin and bones, with a bulging belly. The vet said she has a 60-70% chance she will overcome this. Really, there’s not much more I can do, but administrate her all these different drugs, and help her to overcome it.
If she doesn't start eating today, she will be on an opium based painkiller tomorrow, (i think she said morpine :?) and then we will have to see what happens tomorrow.
I have hope for her, lets hope she picks up soon!

Re: Vibes for Hermy and Janak - She's gone
Poor Hermy, what a rotten time she is having. I can't imagine how you must be feeling Janak. You are doing so well with her and for her, you should be very proud of yourself.
Did Kim offer an explanation as to why Hermy has become bloated, is it linked to the spay at all?
Am still sending loads of vibes for you and Hermy. I am sure she couldn't want for better care.

Awwwww poor girl, you are doing all you can for her, I really hope she starts to improve soon.
Did they vet say if this is all related to the spay ?

Re: Vibes for Hermy and Janak - She's gone
I am so sorry to hear that she is still unwell. She is very lucky that you are her bunny dad because a lesser person would have given up or not had the sense to do all that you have done for her. I really hope the new meds start to work for you and her. Hugs to you. xx

Re: Vibes for Hermy and Janak - She's gone
thank you so much guys... I really do appreciate it...
The vet said that by the looks of it, the spay itself was a complete success, and she thinks they did a very good job on it, as there was no infection or inflammation. The wound has healed nicely, and her fur is already growing back. She did say that she is very sore on one side of her abdomen, where she thinks there has been some extra tugging, when they removed one of the uterine tubes and ovary. But she said that the other vets have done a good job on the spay. I didn't ask them if all of this was DIRECTLY linked with the spay, but I will tomorrow. I think i might put in an angry complaint if i do find out that they have been overdosing her with Meloxidyl.
She did pick up a little... taking a little interest in some mint, and alfafa hay... but now she is back to the bad side... I just don't know what to do. two poos in 6 days... and stuff is still going inside of her, but just not coming out. I think she may have to go onto the morphine tomorrow, to try and ease all the pain that the metacam isn't taking care of. If she does, i'm not allowed to syringe her, as she could choke because she will be so woozy.
The vet even said she wouldn't be here without my help.... she's not improving, but she is still bright when I take her out of her hutch and bring her into the house for her syringe meds. I just feel so bad for her.

Oh Janak, I'm so sorry that Hermy is still sick.
You know, everyone is right - you are doing the most fantastic job with her, you're so positive and level-headed.
I'm so praying that she will make it - sending her and you lots of vibes. Hope to hear some better news very soon. x

Re: Vibes for Hermy and Janak - She's gone
Aww poor Hermy. But those odds are hopeful hon and you are doing SUCH an amazing job with her.
I can't believe you were given the wrong dosages that is shocking! I've had some less bun-savvy vets have to go and look up the dosage before but it never bothered me, at least I knew they were being careful. You should definitely tell them about it so they don't keep doing it for other rabbits!!!
All my fingers and toes are crossed for Hermione at this end. She is such a special girl :luv:
Thinking of you

Totally second this
Re: Vibes for Hermy and Janak - She's gone
I am so hoping that Hermione has started to poo overnight.
I have been thinking about her so much.
Janak, did the vets mention an Xray at all? I am thinking this may be useful to find out what is going on inside her tummy.

Re: Vibes for Hermy and Janak - She's gone
The rabbit specialist receptionist refused to let me speak to the vet. She said she needs to be admitted to be watched over, but they dont have an attending nurse overnight whats the point?!
Theo has her now, and will refer Hermy to her vets. She is in a very bad state right now... Theos trying her best with her...

Re: Vibes for Hermy and Janak - She's gone
Oh Janak, I'm sorry that she's still not responding and that you've had such a bad time especially when you have worked so hard to nurse her. I know that Theo will do everything she can for her, she really helped me last year, and I'm convinced that without her help Ruby wouldn't be here now.
With Theo and her vet's help I'm sure Hermy will get the best possible care.
Sending lots of vibes to you, Hermy and Theo.

Re: Vibes for Hermy and Janak - She's gone
Okies, sorry I haven't been able to update the thread but I have been rather tied up with intensive nursing, Hermy is still in a critical condition and needs loads of vibes, prayers and very positive thoughts
She is having loads of medication and treatment and it is a constant nursing job with her, she is very low at the moment, although she is not in pain anymore, I will nurse her through the night and she has an appointment at 8.30 am in the morning.
Please continue to send her vibes, she really does need them. she is a very poorly girl
