Re: A Pee Problem UD. RESULTS
E.C is a very tricky thing because it can present itself in so many different forms, I mean if you compare Dollys symptoms to Domino - theres nothing the same. Anf thats what makes it so difficult to spot, because its different for every bun. But I do agree its a good thing to test for it!

Re: A Pee Problem UD. RESULTS
Aw don't worry Sophia
I went straight ahead after a bit of research and vet advice not to mention Tigger had been really ill so was susceptible to absolutely everything! It can present itself in so many forms as SJ said. I know that it affects the nervous system in the spine and brain of the bun creating lesions so they can't control their bladder. After a few days treatment she was absolutely fine
Try not to panic though it sounds like you've caught it early.
Hopefully it won't affect you in terms of your immune system, make sure you wash hands etc well as I don't think it lasts very long without a host.

Re: A Pee Problem UD. RESULTS
Thanks guys. At the moment, im just besides myself with worry. Ive not got any of my work done thats due in for tomorrow. It might not be EC, and the lady from SAA could be totally wrong, but she has bent over backwards to get information together for me and also contacted her bunny savvy vet when i explained about being on immunosupression. She said shes had a number of buns that have both been carriers with symptoms and carriers without. One of them, the only sign that he has it is that he drinks an awful lot.
She recieved this reply;
"I’ve got to say that E.cunic can spread to immunosuppressed humans so the best (and I recognise the hardest) advice would be to rehome the rabbits if they are positive . I’d be happy to speak with her vet, but perhaps the best person to speak with would be her consultant. I would definitely want her to avoid contact with the urine/faeces and to be very aware of hand washing etc after interaction with the rabbits. Hopefully they will not be positive!
Cheers,
Molly"
Then there is an article online from Woodward veterinary practices that says at the bottom, i just need to be careful when cleaning them out.
http://www.woodward-vets.co.uk/information/Encephalitozoon%20cuniculi.pdf
If Dolly has it, its not the end of the world, i know. But under the circumstances, i dont know what to expect. I have no idea what my parents will say. They may just want their first course of treatment to be done away from me, and then manage the routine treatments myself and be vigilent when cleaning. We dont know. This is my concern now, i promised those bunnies id never let anything happen to them, and if Dad has anything to do with it, he will want me to rehome them.

I have no idea how I missed this! I really really hope that you and her are okxxxx
I know it's easy for me to say but try not to panic - there is a good chance this isn't EC too, and could be something treatable.
Hope those results come back soon - all three of mine have been tested and their tests took about a week x

Re: A Pee Problem UD. RESULTS
Update on Dolly.
Urine was clear of infection, but its very dilute and vet could see something which she thought may be an EC spore. They are both having panacur for 6 weeks and Dolly is having blood tests next week to check kidney function, liver function and to check if she has been exposed to EC.
Im not telling mum that they are on treatment for it, because she will freak out and over react and i can really do without it. She was bad enough last night. I think the chances of me getting it are very slim, but will speak to my consultant at the end of the month. Theres not a chance im rehoming them, no where would be good enough for a start and theyre my world. Just got to hope that she doesnt get any serious side effects, and if she has been exposed to it then once shes been treated, we can keep on top of it and it wont be a problem. My poor little Dolly monster

Re: A Pee Problem UD. RESULTS
Okay well if thats what it is, then you have caught it really early and thats good - Domino didnt show any symptoms until he was really bad. so thats a positive.
Even though Domino was really bad we never did any blood tests, and the vet said to me that basically once he was home, she didnt want him back at the vets unless it was urgent etc - because the stress plays such a huge part in a condition like E.C And she said taking the blood test would be stressful for him, and if he did have kidney issues, we will find out by other symptoms. Okay it wouldnt be as instant because it would be playing a waiting game, but the stress could have caused him to get worse.
Each bunny is different and maybe because Dolly isnt bad.........she could handle the blood test fine, so theres no right or wrong answer really, but just thought it was worth mentioning!
sending some vibes for her x

I know stress can make it worse, but theres no way of really knowing if she has it, even with teh blood test, however (i think you already said) that if the test comes back positive then we can assume that this is the problem. In which case, ill have to be extremely careful until shes finished the first course. Testing her is also to get piece of mind for myself due to the immune system. If shes positive, ill know to be careful, if shes negative, brilliant, i dont have to worry about catching anything from her. Unless i know, its always going to be at the back of my mind.

Re: A Pee Problem UD. RESULTS
It's difficult, isn't it, because a huge proportion of buns test positive for EC (is it over 50%) with many never showing clinical symptoms. So even if she is a carrier, that might not be what is making her slightly off and if she is a carrier but not 'active' I wonder if that makes her less of a risk to you.
It's not something that had ever occurred to me, with your depleted immune system. Here's a thought - have you checked that there is nothing that your other pet(s) could be carrying which would also potentially put you at risk? Not to scare you any further, but if the same rules suddenly applied to the dog too perhaps your Mum would be a bit more open to you managing whatever risk there is rather than instantly wanting to rehome the buns...
I just hope the tests come back clear anyway

Re: A Pee Problem UD. RESULTS
I have already said to Mum that as an RVN im going to come into contact with zoonotic illnesses quite often, and sometimes not even know about it. I cant start refusing to treat animals beccause they have an illness with a small chance of being passed on to me. She cant protect me from everything, unless shes going to put me in a bubble and financially support me for the rest of my life!

If it is EC hun, its brilliant that you have caught it soooo early. Marley, Dolly and Hughie are so very lucky to have you there to take care of them.
Remember to keep yourself well though hunni, take any precautions you can as you are no good to them poorly either. x x x x x

Re: A Pee Problem UD. RESULTS
Had Poppy dog to the vets tonight for her jabs and Jane put us in her clinic so we could discuss the costs of Dollys tests, as she wasnt sure the other day. Shes going in tomorrow for her blood tests. Marley cant go with her though, because they cant tell them apart Its a good job things like this dont affect their bond!!
Its going to be around £120, i was led to believe it would be around £50 but never mind. Im just wondering if its worth putting on the insurance?? My excess is £70, which is fine. But i got them insured incase of really expensive bills, and this isnt too bad really. But its a lot with it being 2 weeks before Christmas.

Re: A Pee Problem UD. RESULTS
I'd be inclined to say that the insurance is there so use it. It's not like you get a No Claims Bonus with pet insurance. Plus if she needs follow-up treatment or medication of any sort, the insurance side is already in place. I'm not sure if a claim would push next year's premium up - I've never claimed.
Re: Marley - are the insides of their ears too black to put a dot on with a marker pen? I'm just thinking of how baby buns ears are marked sometimes when they all look alike and have been sexed but are not being split up yet...
Lots of luck for the blood tests to be negative for EC
