Update 20.02
I'm schocked.
I have just spoken to the vet at the Animla hospital.
After seeing Bertie and checking him through it was decided that an x ray wasn't first choice.
They performed a CT instead as it only required a mild sedation.
They had a phone call from the radiographers back asking,
Did you put a needle in this bunnies chest?
Answer no, we don't do such things
Bertie has got a Pneumothorax:scratch:
Likely caused by an ongoing chest infection.
Yes he will stay there overnight on iv fluids, different antibiotics( thank god for that no more Baytrill:thumb:) and ranitidine as well as a course of panecur.
I had started to write this when they phoned again to say he is still drowsy but eating little bits. So I went back for a visit and I'm pleased to say the plan is if he continues to recover well he may be able to come home tommorow:dance:
I met the vet on duty tonight and we discussed everything. She will call me at any time if there is a change in his condition. Otherwise another set of blood in the morning an update phone call to me and I hope and wish to pick him up by lunchtime.
What can I say. I apologised for not recognising something severe like this. But unless the bunny gets noisy breathing there s nothing to alert hoomins of such.

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
I'm not slightly surprised now knowing about his chest. A pneumothorax is very! Painful and leaves you short of breath. Blood carries oxygen so that explained the low red blood cell in test. This poor fellow must have suffered and I didn't realise. With low oxygen levels one gets fatigued and weak. It just all makes sense now.Thumper2001 wrote:Keeping everything crossed for Bertie.Aw just a young thing then! Poor, poor bunny. Can they say what the prognosis is? I'm hoping that now they've found it and know how to treat it that the outcome is likely to be good?

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
We didn't talk about the prognosis yet as we at waiting for the full report of the CT. I know in hoomins is likely to leave lesions or scar tissue and if this is the case I guess nebulising will be a regular treatment. They are doing it now with F10 so I better get a stock in.
I have phone our vet to inform them and make sure they are happy to treat him if needed and they are fine with this. I dupes cussed the option if he would deteriorate and suffer to pts at home rather then another travel to the surgery and they agreed to this.
When mentioning it to the vet at the hospital she said, I don't think this is an issue at the moment.

Well that's good, at least we know he's not in stasis. Have they had to do anything to release the pressure in his chest? Poor Bertie, BUT at least you have answers now, that must be a huge relief. Fingers crossed he continues to improve and is back to his usual self soon. Sending more vibes. xxx

Bertie back home :-)
Thanks everyone for all the thoughts and vibes they have worked wonders.
Bertie(and Bubbles) are back home.
He responded to the iv fluid, and new treatment very well and they were happy for him to come home and continue treatment here.
I'm impressed by they way this was dealt with.
No surgery was done as we are still awaiting the detailed report from the CT. but he seems to have responded to the new antibiotics and metacam in easement to 1ml twice a day. F10 nebulisers three times a day on top and tell you what he is sitting still on my lap for 45 minutes to receive it via the children mask.
Good boy!
I'm going to prepare dinner now. We have an appointment at our vet on Monday for follow up and Swindon will be in touch as soon as the results are back. They have taken bloods today to see whether there is change, improvement.
Love this bunny as he is gentle and patient. Wouldn't fancy to try this with Bubbles.
To all other poorly bunnies we send all vibes available. And of course we will keep you posted!

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
Thanks for all the vibes.
He had a little dip this afternoon. Eating is the issue, only taking very little of his greens and no pellets at all this morning. I moistened them and he had 3.
Then the routine of medicines and nebuliser. Metacam uped it 1 ml twice daily. This afternoon I found him hunched in the corner teeth grinding. Poos are getting smaller! Alert! Phoned the vet. Give metrocloperamide on top of the Ranitidine continue nebulising. No further increase in metacam only option to start tramadol which is likely to make him more sleepy and constipated.
So we decided to start syringe feeding him. Due to follow up with our vet in the morning. Im worried that he is in pain we need our thinking caps on. Bless him he is still my Mr. handsome.
I'm going up now for evening treatment.
